How would things be different if...?

I was just wondering your opinion of how things would be different if certain events occured instead of what really happened.
Here's my first query: How would things be different if Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were released in full the first time around instead of being split up as Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles?

Not a lot really: less proffits for Sonic Team, less money spent by consumers, no Knuckles in Sonic the Hedgehog 2, no random special stages and less games on Mega Collection and whatnot. Though in saying that, I guess Sonic 3 and Knuckles could not have made the Christmas release, so maybe Sonic Team's profits would have been hurt a little- between this and the fact that it would only be one game.
Splitting Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles wasn't as bad as it sounds though, yes they (or at least Sonic 3) were glitch ridden, lacked a character, had less levels and obviously meant parting with more money but completing either apart would probably take at least as long as Sonic 2. It's like peanuts and butter: good apart but even better together (I'm not too sure if that's and accurate simile).

I think my impression of both games would have been stronger if they'd at least both had S&K's level of polish right from the get-go, but yeah, not a lot of difference. Even though it was a separate game I think everyone recognized--even the ones who didn't know what the term meant--it was a "patch" for Sonic 3 and even though it was great, it was not REALLY a whole new game, and the more time that passes the more it seems so. So retrospectively, it can only make less and less a difference if they were released together. :)
Though, the length of S3&K would have been monsterous back then, it certainly would have been interesting to see how people responded to it as a single game.

Butter is disgusting by itself. What the crap is wrong with you.

...peanut butter is not peanuts and butter mixed together, it's ground up peanuts.

It never made the Christmas release to begin with.

Alright, I pose a query:
If Abraham Lincoln had been Kennedy's vice president, and was not shot, and was by some strange miracle alive, how would Vietnam been affected, if at all?

I think it would've gone down as one of the generation's greatest games. As it is now, Sonic fans aside, most people seem to look back more fondly on Sonic 2 and even 1 and CD.

Second question:
How would things be different if Sonic XTreme was finished and released?

It'd be Sonic Heroes 1996.

Oy, Sonic Xtreme and Sonic 3D Blast in the same year? People would lose faith in the franchise much earlier than they do now and it wouldn't be Sonic Team's fault.

What the hell is your major malfunction, soldier? Heroes is a crappy game that no-one really likes. Except you.

If Xtreme came out, then we would have missed out on the Saturn 3D Blast's awesome Special Stages. But then again, we would be fighting Fang and Metal Sonic in 3D, and overall the gameplay would have beaten the crap out of 3D Blast; then again, that's not hard to do.

It never made the Christmas release to begin with.
It didn't? I always remember buying it after my birthday (4th of January) but it could have been a little while after it or perhaps I've got my years muddled up.

Obviously my word choice and ability to create similes is rather lacking...
...peanut butter is not peanuts and butter mixed together, it's ground up peanuts.
Guess you really do learn something new every day (or multiple things in my case).
As for the current "what if," I'd say it would have resulted in a canceled NIGHTS, wasn't there a big fuss over the engine or something? Oh, and wasn't Sonic 3d on Saturn released as a compromise for no X-treme?

I have a habbit of taking food a little too literally, I had a similar confusion with "Wine Gums."

Sonic 3 was launched February 2nd, 1994.
wasn't Sonic 3d on Saturn released as a compromise for no X-treme?
I pointed this out in my previous post, although indirectly.

I would bet that X-treme would have turned out better than 3D, not that 3D is even as bad as you guys make it out to be.

It had some flaws, but there were some cool parts to it. The graphics were beautiful, the expansion on the Flickies was pretty good, the music was really good (and evidently Sonic Team agrees with me since they remixed it in SA for WV and TP), and the overall gameplay was decent.
My only real complaint is that when you get hit, you lose all your Flicky friends. Even that can be countered by prematurely dumping them in the ring and then hunting for their friends.
