Being one of the few here who happens to be anything resembling serious, I figured we should all do something to honour those who risked it all to save us from quite possibly the greatest evil the world has ever faced. I'm sure we all have a way to pay respect to these heroes, and I think we should post it in this thread.
For those inclined, here is
my way of saying "thank you" to the valient men on those beaches sixty years ago:
*The tune of the "Colonel Bogey March" starts up.*
Hitler... has only
got one ball!
Goering... has two
but they are small!
Himler... has something sim'ler!
And little Goerbels - has no balls -
at all!
Here's to the Greatest Generation.

A lot of people in my family fought in WW2, but I think they were all in Japan.
We should remember D-Day.

Amen. <raises goblet of cheap french wine that many sacrificed their lives to ensure it's continuing existance. Horay!>
Oh, and are you singing the american version of that? The British one is a bit more violet - maestro?
Hitler... has only got one ball!
The other... was in the albert hall
His mother, the stupid bugger, went and threw it in the deep blue sea!
The fishes got out their dishes, and had scollops and bollocks for tea!
My grandad was a pilot but his plane broke. He was okay though.

My granddad was a chef on a naval vessel. Did his part by ensuring that the brave combatants could fight on a full stomach.
Cheers!

Shouldn't we honor everyone? After all the Russians probably did a hell of a lot more than we did in terms of lives lossed anyway.

Here's to all the Tommies that fell for the cause, including all my grand-uncles and grand-cousins that went down fighting for the RAF. *salute*

Well, I'm all for honouring the Russians but they didn't exactly have much to do with the D-Day invasion in particular, eh? :)

Heh. So true.

Yeah, but the D-Day invasion didn't have to much to do with winning the war, eh?

I'm not knocking the role of the Russians in the war. They were by far the biggest reason for allied victory in Europe. But this is the anniversary of the D-Day invasion, and it doesn't exactly make a lot of sense to use this particular moment to honor people who didn't have anything to do with it, even if they are very nice men and everything.

I've just thought (it had to happen sooner or later); Is there actually any holidays in the western calender that honour russian sacrifices in the war?

Probably not, seeing how there was that whole little Cold War thing afterwards...

Don't you guys have something-or-another called Veterans Day? We have "Rememberance Day" up here, which I assume applies to the sacrafices of all nations in war, even if it does tend to focus on the home team.

The Cold War isn't a factor... Just think for more than a minute... Why would one country have a day to honor another country... Celebrating holidays such as these are meant to stir patriotic pride and having one for another country goes against that... In the end all these days are just to boast the ratings of our leaders... And the day that is for the Great Patriotic War is May 9th, Victory Day... And has anyone else noticed that if a day doesn't have set eating parameters, most people just grill... What is even weirder I have seen people do it on Arbor Day with wood chips, calling it an Arbor Day party...

We have Veterans Day, Esrever, but it's pretty much intended for US vets.

Gotcha.
Well I didn't mean to sound like Canada was super international in our holiday, either. Now that I think about it, I can't remember ever hearing anyone mention other countries' sacrafices at one of those cerimonies. Like Jaden says, I guess that sort of goes against the whole purpose for them anyhow.
