Haunted graphics program

A couple days ago I loaded up Painter Classic to do some drawing, as always. It loaded up fine, but the second I tried to draw - either with the tablet or the mouse - the program shut down. I tried it a few times, and resetting the system didn't work, so I reinstalled the program and it seemed to solve the problem.

Until the next day. Then the same thing happened, so I reinstalled the program and it worked again. Until the next day, which would be today. I'm very curious to know what might be causing this peculiar malady, that seems to occur after ever 24-hour period. Other similar programs, such as Painter 8 and Photoshop, are working fine. Painter Classic is my primary drawing tool, and I would rather once again have the convenience of not having to reinstall it every single day.

So whad up wit dat?

Sell it on eBay.

But seriously, when you re-install something, it's settings may still be there from the last time you had it installed. Try deleting the program's whole directory under the Program Files folder (after you uninstall it), and anywhere else you can think of leftovers from the program may be. If you know how to use the registry, check there too.

There's also the very unlikely chance that there's some kinda bad program running like a virus or sumthin.

Hey, you'd be suprised by the number of ridiculous viruses there are out there, like the one that's designed to randomly run an ambulance across your screen, and nothing else.

Okay, so I did all that, and now it won't work even after reinstalling. This is not cool.

New discovery: it only happens when I use certain tools, such as the loaded palette knife (which is what I usually use to sketch). It's happening in Painter 8 also. Some tools work fine. I guess I'll try reinstalling Painter 8 and see if that does anything.

Fat lot of good that did, now Painter 8 shuts down as soon as it loads, and Classic still shuts down when I try to use certain tools. Everything I do keeps making this worse and worse, what the hell is this?

I predict your computer is going to blow up in 10 minutes.

Don't say I didn't warn ya.

Are you using XP? Have you tried System Restore?

And then there's these sites you could use if you want to check for viruses <i>just in case</i>:
http://housecall.trendmicro.com
and
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan ... ncipal.htm

Don't even bother with System Restore. In my experience it hasn't helped in the least. But it's worth trying those anti-virus programs Spazz mentioned GG!, because it does sound as though you have obtained either a virus or malicious software.

I ran some virus stuff and that didn't work, but then I severed the ether link Del has been using to steal my pornography and it seems to work okay now.

Guess I won't know for sure until tomorrow.

Okay, so how about this one.

The virus that kept messing with my graphics program was this thing called Parite. It started happening again a couple days ago, but Spam had to download some special program to completely eliminate it. Now that's taken care of, but it caused another problem, which I assume is related since it didn't begin until Parite was gone: my computer won't connect to the LAN. (At the moment I'm using my laptop.) Apparently it keeps automatically designating itself a particular IP address, 169 something. Spam's been messing with it all afternoon and can't get it to function properly. Even reinstalling Windows didn't work, and he's out of ideas except to reformat the whole drive, which he's not even sure will solve the problem. Of course, I just reformatted barely a month ago, and I'd hate to have to go through all that crap again if I'm not guaranteed results, especially considering I'm already a couple weeks behind on some business I'm trying to take care of, and every delay puts me further into the red zone.

So... any ideas?

What was the program that Spam ran to remove the virus called?

Getting a new LAN card won't do much if the program that's causing the trouble is still operating. Besides, he's using a laptop, so unless it's a removeable card, he shouldn't bother.

Have you checked your Win.ini file to see if there are any network viruses being executed from the mci extensions, Gibbon? I've hear it’s a fairly simple way to check; you just have to look for a line resembling "run= C:\Windows\(filename).exe" or something like that.

If you have tried it along with reconfiguring your network settings and reinstalled your drivers, it will either come down to you spending some time and possibly money on a good anti-virus program (which I will again assume you have already tried), or the reformat. Just burn all of your important information (assumedly your nekkid booby pics) onto CD's or something if you have to resort to the latter; it's not that bad to endure.

Yeah, I was going to ask. Was it something called SP2?

Try clearing your hosts file. That may work.

What you describe is what Windows does when it can't find any other IP address to give. Make sure the network settings for your computer is exactly the same as the settings on the Laptop.

Oh, and for your own sake, stop running your computer as administrator.

It turned out to be something with the router. Unfortunately, the whole thing had already been formatted when that discovery was made....
