So has anyone been reading Marvel Comics' Runaways series? I got into the series with the very affordable digests to see what all the bus was about. I've just finished reading the third book and it fucking floored me, there were so many twists I never saw coming.

For those of you who haven't heard of it, it's a relatively new series written by Brian K Vaughan with pencils from Adrian Alphona (with Takeshi Miyazawa covering for #11-12). It's about five teenagers and one pre-teen whose rich and influential parents meet up once a year to supposedly discuss their charity work - at least that's what their kids think until they witness the twelve of them killing a young girl in a ritualistic sacrafice. The kids decide to make a break for it and turn their parents into the authorities but are stopped in their tracks when they discover that all of California is under their parents' thumbs. The only things the kids have to survive with whilst on the run are their own wits and "powers" derived from their parents - the scientists' kid takes off with some tech equipment, the sorcerers' kid steals a magic staff and so on.

It's very character driven with witty and naturalistic dialogue with a premise that can appeal to anyone who's ever been a teenager. It's without a doubt one of the best and most relevent Marvel series there's been in years, maybe even decades.

The first series ran for 18 issues and the first issue of the second series has just been released. The 18 issues of the first series have been collected into 3 full colour digests (priced $7.99 each) and according to Marvel's collection division there's a strong possibility of the 18 issues being collected into a high quality oversized hardcover.

It sounds like a very interesting series, and I'm really wondering how the hell the dinosaur plays into things.

On the other hand, I think the reverse concept would be cooler. The offspring of some uptight superheroes rebell against their goody-goody parents and become supervillains.

The oversized hardcover hasn't been entirely confirmed yet so it'll be a long wait and it'd probably retail at around $40. The digests are an absolute bargain at $8 each, so you're best off going with them.

Pretty much. The individual issues didn't get a very high print run and it had trouble getting off of the ground from being released alongside a lot of other new series, its popularity came almost entirely from word of mouth, creating high demand for the back issues but little supply. So Marvel released the collected digest editions and they sold like crazy (their best selling digest series, in the direct market at least).
