Mega Mystery Minus

Post by big_smile »

Even though I already own the majority of Sonic games, I still purchased Sonic Mega Collection Plus due to its addition of the save state facility. The Gamecube original was missing this essential feature and so was completely worthless, as I don't have the time to beat an entire game on single sitting. Despite have absolutely no expectations for any other extras, I've still been disappointed by Sonic Team's latest attempt to cash in on their ageing IP.

If it wasn’t for the save state addition then Mega Collection Minus would have been an appropriate name for this 'update', as much of the content from the Gamecube original is missing. Gone are the story menus and character profiles, which, although were fairly mediocre (barring the brief clarifications provided for the Sonic 3 story), would have been pleasing to see again, especially if Sonic Team had expanded on them. The movie section has withered down to the intro and opening team dark scenes from Sonic Heroes. Storyboards and unfinished versions for each of these movies have been included, but the section hardly makes use of the PS2's DVD capabilities. The manual section still only contains the inferior US versions (apart from the Japanese manual for Sonic Drift), which is obviously a shame, especially as the Sonic fandom has yet to acquire the Japanese manual for G-Sonic.

The storyboards contain a few rejected ideas:
Image
^ The Sonic Heroes logo was originally supposed to have wings

Image
^ Amy's underage drinking is exposed

Image
^ The Team Rose sequence in the opening movie originally had a little less
action

Image
^An oddly drawn Omega from the intro story board (It's unlikely to be a prototype design as he is properly drawn in the Team Dark sketches)

Image
Image
^ Clips from the unfinished opening movie

Image
^ Embarrassed by their real names, the Green Hill Zone robots team up with Naaru to chase the Japanese manuals away

Image
^ The credits section has a new theme

Image
Image
^ Before and after: A comparison of the old and new menu systems

Aside from the savestate feature, most of the enjoyment to be had from ‘Plus’ comes from exploring the game disc on a PC. The ROMs folder contains 3 iterations of Sonic 1, 2 versions of Sonic & Tails and, most interestingly, 2 different copies of Sonic 2. The extra versions of Sonic 1 and Sonic & Tails are probably as the same as those found on the Gamecube release of Mega and Mini-Game Collection, but the alternative Sonic 2 ROM is a complete mystery. Both European and American ROMs for all the games are on the disc, although only Sonic 1 and Sonic & Tails have Japanese editions.

^ The ROM folders

All the manuals are in AFS archives, which when uncompressed produce unreadable BIN files. There are separate archives for Mean Bean Machine and, oddly, Puyo Puyo, although it doesn't appear that any other Japanese manuals are on the disc. Each archive, however, contains more BIN files than the number of pages in the US manuals, so the Japanese scans could be buried in there somewhere.

^ The manual folder

The files in the movies folder are also unreadable, but the folder actually contains more files than the four movies accessible in the game. Some of these files may be the background preview movies that appear when selecting a game to play, but this seems unlikely, as there are less than twenty files. The files titled 'Staff' and 'Title' are self-explanatory.

Of course the biggest mystery relates to the GAME offer of a free T-Shirt for all pre-orders. On the day of release, I received an email that my T-Shirt couldn't be shipped with the game due to supply problems, but I was reassured that it will be sent shortly. One week later and I am still waiting - where is it?!

The only game I complained about not being able to save in the original Sonic Mega Collection was Sonic 3-D: Flickies Island. Traveler's Tales should've put in a damn saving feature, or at least a password system.

Maybe I should pick the PS2 version just for the save state. It's only 20 bucks..

For some strange reason, when I got Mega Collection Plus, that was the first game I played. Still is. I can save state which is great, but I myself am stumped at the fact that I'm playing Sonic 3D fuckin' Blast for crying out loud! I don't know why I'm playing it. It's strange. I guess dissing the game all these years, I sorta warmed up to the little bitch.

The analogue stick really enhances the game, as it is no longer frustrating to change directions or leap over gaps. It’s no where in the same league as the original Sonic Team games, but with the improved control Sonic 3D is an enjoyable Sonic title.

Sonic 3D, enjoyable? Maybe I will considered picking this up for this fact alone despite Plus' lack of any decent extras. But I mean, honestly, how difficult is it to shove in some old-school Sonic pictures and production sketches into a compilation game, or those hilarious Japanese Sonic commercials that made Sonic Jam so good? Instead of additional extra material for Plus, they actually took out content from the original Mega Collection? And for what? Some GG Sonic games which are really not that great to begin with. It's just another wasted opportunity gone down the drain.

Why do people do anything? Because they can. If it has Sonic 3D Blast, we might as well play it at least once, dammit! It's better than playing Sonic Spinball or G Sonic, but then again, that's not saying anything really.

I'd pick Spinball over 3D Blast any day of the week.

Or most days of the week, anyway.

The Saturn version of Sonic 3D had some nice music and the best Special Stages in Sonic history. I'd always hoped for a volume 2 of Sonic Jam featuring the game, then we'd be able to play the Special Stages on their own.

What VCP said, I loved the music on Saturn's Sonic 3D Blast.

I'll probably buy Plus somewhere down the road, only to ease my fear that one day my Sega Genesis will die on me.

Indeed, although the less said about him (and SoE) commissioning T.J. Davis for the vocals in Sonic R, the better.

Y'know T.J. Davis isn't even hot? Just based on her voice, I figured she was some fine-ass black chick, but it turns out she's some chubby pasty European broad.

It isn't really related, but while I'm talking about singers, I also found out that Joanne Hogg (vocalist for the songs in Xenogears and Xenosaga) is actually a contemporary Christian singer. I thought that was pretty interesting, considering Xenogears almost wasn't brought over due to its heavy use of Christian symbology.

As a Christian (well, I consider myself about 75% of it), I'm really curious on playing Xenogears.

I really don't understand why people become so offended of certain shows or games that contain warped influences, to outright criticism, of the Christian dogma and beliefs. Granted, the main western target for the game is Americans which is mostly a Christian influence society, but even I as a Christian myself can tell when something is merely fictional and shouldn't be taken as the latest cult movement.

Extra_D0.SFD and Extra_D1.SFD are most likely the Team Dark movies, while Extra_O0.SFD and Extra_O1.SFD are probably the Opening Sonic Heroes movies.

Does anyone know away of opening .SFD files, so we can see what the other movies are? Extra_A, _B and _O2 seem like they might contain something interesting.

If you like reading miles and miles of text, Xenogears just may be for you.

To those who played Xenosaga: Is Xenosaga as text heavy as Xenogears? 'Cuz if Xenogears is any indication of how Xenosaga is going to be like, I don't think I'm going to be very interested. And can you at least press a button so all the text shows up at once, instead of the snail's pace text in Xenogears? 'Cuz I recently got a PSTwo (they're small!) less than a month ago and finished Kingdom Hearts and Katamari Damacy, and right now I'm looking for another title. I've got me eyes set on Sly Cooper and FFX, but are there any other titles I should play, unless I want my life to be incomplete?

I got the t-shirt. It was too small, though. Fits my brother.

First game I played was Sonic Chaos. I loved this game on that GG I borrowed from someone years ago. It's still good.

I was a little annoyed that they took the Sonic CD movies off the disk. I'm hoping they're unlockable or something.

PAL SMC+ (Xbox) can't do 60hz mode properly on the emulated games, so that renders it pretty useless for me. I'd rather have nice smooth 60hz Sonic 1, than jerky 50hz Sonic 1 with a save state feature.

Xenosaga is to FMVs as Xenogears is to text. So if you don't mind what is basically an interactive movie with a shitty plot that is a disgrace to Xenogears, then 'saga's for you!

If you didn't like Xenogears, chances are you won't like Xenosaga. There's nothing in it like Xenogears where by disc 2 they ran out of time and budget, but it also doesn't really have a conclusion, and yeah, there are alot of loooong cutscenes.
