Watterson is busy making watercolour paintings in the wilderness and not showing them to anyone. Only a handful of people even know his mailing address. That man is the definition of dropping of the radar.

Didn't that one guy that was really good at chess do that. Bobby Fischer I think his name was. He was really good, then disappeared and everyone thought he died. Then he lost his title cause he didn't defend it, then suddenly reappeared and reclaimed it then disappeared again? I think he did a better job of dropping off the radar cause people weren't even sure if he was alive.

I'm not sure why I brought that up, but Im kinda bored since its 3:30 AM and I have nothing to do, but I'm not tired since I woke up at 5PM. You're all now better for having read this.

He didn't so much "drop off the radar" as "get arrested in Japan for breaking U.S. embargo laws."

Are we talking about Watterson or Fischer?

Fischer, unless Watterson has been accepting illegal chess tournament winnings.

Fischer participated in a Chess match in Yugoslavia in 1992, at a time when US sanctions against the country included sporting events. After that, he went into hiding, since there was now a warrant for his arrest. He still occassionally popped up for radio interviews in which he made some pretty vicious comments towards the US.

This guy, for the record, is an anti-semite and a pretty outspoken opponent of America's support for Israel. After 9/11, he made some comments during an interview about how he thought the US deserved it. So he's not exactly encouraging anyone here to go easy on him. He hasn't actually been imprisoned, but he's having trouble staying in Japan. He tried to renounce his American citizenship, and he's taken a Japanese wife, but it's virtually impossible to get citizenship in Japan, even if you aren't a criminal in the United States. Japan tried to deport him earlier this year, but I think he is appealing the decision or something.

Actually, I can kind of see why he'd be pissed.

Makes me kinda regret the fact that I have a few of the Calvin and Hobbes book in non-hardcover editions...shame.
