Who's your travelling mate?
Yes, I know; I hate reading polls, and I hate making polls even more, but I'm rather curious about what you guys think on this topic.
So now that we have a little bit more info more about both of the upcoming portables (namely pricing), which one are you going for? I myself was surprised at how relatively cheap the PSP is set to retail for in Japan.
PRICE
DS: $150
PSP: ~$170 - $200
BATTERY LIFE
DS: 6-10 hours
PSP: 4-6 hours
SIZE
DS (when closed): 148.7 mm (5.85 inches) wide, 84.7 mm (3.33 inches) long, 28.9 mm (1.13 inches) tall
PSP: 170mm (6.7 inches) wide, 74mm (2.9 inches) long, 23mm (0.9 inches) tall
SCREENS
DS: 2
PSP: 1

You forgot the 'neither of them interest me' option. The PSP at least looks like a really nice bit of technology, but the DS just looks like a bulkier GBA to me, and I really can't forsee any real use in that touchscreen feature. Of course, neither of them have any fucking games I want to play on them.

Y'know, that was the lone feature of the DS that excited me initially, but now that I've thought about it and looked at what developers are doing with it, it's really nothing more than a novelty. It's like Eye Toy. The only thing you can do with it are mini-games with very little variety, and I get the strong impression that every DS game is going to be basically the exact same experience. After the initial fascination with the touch screen has worn off (and I know I'll be fascinated with it for at least a solid 30 or 40 minutes), y'know, what do you have?and I really can't forsee any real use in that touchscreen feature.
On the other hand, if the system is going to link up with Nintendo's next console, which I think has been confirmed, there might be some interesting functions for it in the context of real games. I mean, not that I think it's a feature anyone's going to bother utilizing.
The PSP is just sexy. I want to put my dick all over it, though I already own a goddamn PlayStation, so I guess I'll never buy any games to put into it.

Have you guys played Metroid Zero Mission on the GBA? I wasn't really ever a big fan of Metroid, but I revisited Metroid Prime again this year and ended up really digging it... and then, having also liked Metroid Fusion, I picked up Metroid Zero to keep me company on holiday, and-- well goshdarnit, if it isn't one of the most perfect games I've played in years. I couldn't stop playing the damned thing.
The sad thing it is is that, aside from a passing relationship with the original Pokemon games in high school (I didn't touch the cards or the TV show or any of the other harder stuff, I swear), it remains the only real justification I've ever had for owning a handheld system. Compared to what I've got sitting under my TV, it just isn't... interesting.

And even then, does the fact that it's a handheld game work to its benefit, or would it be just as good on your TV?it remains the only real justification I've ever had for owning a handheld system.
Personally, I consider Made in Wario the only truly good handheld game ever in the fact that having it all in the palm of your hand genuinely enhances the experience. It's also the only portable game ever that really is a portable game. It's perfect to whip out and just screw around with if you've only got ten or fifteen minutes to kill.
Not that there haven't been other handheld games that I consider good, but in all cases I'd rather be playing them on a TV screen.

I second that, if anyone put more than half a thought into a cell phone game it could be at least half decent. Personaly, I was looking foward to ff7 before crisis, however it isnt coming to the states so my opinion stays the same...Cell phone games are shit.

Square announced that Core Crisis, another game starring the Turks, is coming exclusively to PSP, so there you go. And yeah, the shift key is there for a reason.BlueChiki wrote: i second that, if anyone put more than half a thought into a cell phone game it could be at least half decent, i myself was looking foward to ff7 before crisis, however it isnt coming to the states so my opinion stays the same...
I plan to get both, because well, PSP is like a cute girl... You don't really need a reason for liking it, the fact that it exists is enough for you to become totally infatuated with it. And the DS because, well... Utada Hikaru was in the commercial, and I'm a Nintendo fanboy.
But yeah, when Sony announced the 185 dollar price for PSP, I think all hopes of Nintendo dominating another hand-held generation went out the window. Fanboys say that Nintendo raped all their other handheld competition before, but they were never up against a handheld made by a giant, heartless corporation allied with Satan and the ghost of Hitler's zombie. I really can't see how Nintendo can compete with the PSP unless they lower the price of the DS or include another pack-in game.
