Delicious brains!
George Romero's a neat guy. Night of the Living Dead was grand. Dawn of the Dead was awesome. What I saw of Day of the Dead looked both good and disgusting. The remake of Night of the Living Dead... wasn't so good. (Yeah, I know he didn't direct it). His other movies... well... not quite as good as the Dead flicks.
Now! It's inevitable that a movie is remade. People like to make money. People make money by making movies. Coming up with ideas for movies is hard. It's easier, most of the time, to buy rights to a remake then to come up with your own original plot!
Going from there...
I'm kinda curious about the remake of Dawn of the Dead. The first one was smart, somewhat cynical, very grim, and bloody. I'm expecting the remake to lack the first three bits, but I could be wrong! Most modern movies make the characters unlikable idiots... but I could be wrong!
(Please, please tell me I'm wrong.)
On a related note, how many times have we seen zombies eat brains? What is it about brains, I wonder? Where did it come from? I can see zombies eating the guts, the eyes, the skin, muscle, and all of that fun stuff. But the brains?

I haven't seen the Dawn of the Dead remake, but I love the original just because it's so cheesy.
Like when the cop guy goes into that house, and gets jumped by zombie toddlers and he beats the crap out of them.
Or when that zombie tries to sneak up on the honky refuelling the helicopter, and the helicopter's blades cut his head off... or rather, his toupee.
Or when that fat biker guy is running away from the zombies in the mall, and then he stops to get his blood pressure taken from that arm-squeezing machine-thingy.
Or when the evil biker guy is chasing down the black guy at the end, and when the biker finally spots the black guy, he yells out "I see you Chocolate!!"
Ah, those were good times.

Dawn of the Dead was made on the brink of the 80s, wasn't it? Some of the cheesiness can be excused, cause pretty much everything that was made back then was damned cheesy.
... I still giggle at the hairstyles and clothing.
"Jesus Christ, the pigs are everywhere!"
Or the fat man with a gun who makes someone's head explode.
The Hare Krishna zombie.
And yeah, the guy who sticks his arm inside the blood pressure machine. He was actually told not to mess around with it before. Why the hell does he go back to it again?

The new Dawn of the Dead is great. It is at LEAST as grim and as gory as the original. The missing ingredient is the cultural commentary... the original film poked a lot of fun at consumer culture, but the remake doesn't even go there. It's just a straight-ahead zombie flick... shallow, but well done.
Fortunately, it doesn't come across as a brainless bastardization of the original because, in terms of the actual story, the two films are radically different... the only real similarities are that they both have zombies and they both have a mall. If it weren't for the name, you might not even realize that it was supposed to be a remake at all. So it's pretty easy to enjoy as an entirely seperate movie.

Oh, and did you know that there was a "Night of the Living Dead" radio adaptation? George Romero co-produced it and it even featured the original cast. I saw it at my local Waldenbooks just a few days ago.
Oh, and I'm hopefully going to see "Shaun of the Dead" within the next few weeks. I do like parodies.

It's good that you're going to watch Dawn of the Dead and expecting it to have the same satirical elements the first film had, so maybe you'll enjoy it. I thought was a fun movie. Not great, but I sure wouldn't mind seeing it a few more times. Maddox has a flattering review of it.

The last Dawn of the Dead was great, particularly in how cheesy/idiotic/interesting zombies were killed. I particularly enjoyed the one standing on the crate getting his head lopped by the helicopter.
I havent seen the new one but i've heard via friends that it isnt as good as the last one, it tries to be too serious and ends up not too funny(ala. Freddy Vs. Jason, except that movie was funny) however i liked Freddy Vs. Jason so it may be worth taking a look at...

Ah. Kind of like the Cybermen in "Silver Nemesis", I take it (any "Doctor Who" fan here knows what I mean).Segaholic2 wrote:AvP was pretty weak, in my opinion. The Predators came across as pretty lame pussies.
Well, I know of one possible Ash homage, which actually appeared in an online comic strip; in the long-running "It's Walky!" (created by Dave Ressman, Mike Warner, and David Willis; developed, written, and illustrated by David Willis), there was a goverment agent who had a penchant for wielding a chainsaw in his battles against marauding Aliens, and he eventually died and came back from the dead as a zombie who then went and killed/ate several of his best friends/co-workers whilst carrying out a mission in an isolated locale, only to be subdued by the lone survivor: comely young female. Despite this, it was implied at the end of the series that he would be returning from the dead, eventually. There's actually a character in the Dawn of the Dead remake that I think is an homage to Ash. The guy looks a bit like him, talks like him, is sarcastic, and even weilds chainsaw for part of the movie. Not so sure it's a coincidence.
Even more interestingly enough, the character, known only as "Hooper," was based off of a friend of Willis's, as were the agents in the "squad" Hooper worked with (much like how Sam Raimi knew the original cast of "Evil Dead" from college), and Hooper's real-life counterpart is a big fan of zombie movies, a fact which I believe was even refferred to once in the strip, if memory serves.
Oh, on a divergent note, another character also made a joke about tenticle hentai once. Yes.
EDIT: After abstaining from edits for a week or two, I've gone back to my old habits. God help us all...
