Wow. Just wow. On both accounts. I got a 32X, but for some damn reason it refused to work with my Genesis. Anyone know where I can get some 32X emu's and roms? I bought both of above items, so it wouldn't really be illegal if I were to get the roms, now would it?

But I already <i>have</i> all of that stuff! It's in my closet somewhere. Likely doesn't work anymore, but still.

Wow. I have a 32x, but my Genesis was stolen.
I hate moving companies.

I bought a 32X from Toys R Us for 30 bucks back when it was dying and they wanted to get rid of all of them. I could never get that damn thing to work on my 1st model Genesis. They had instructions for it, but it just didn't want to work. Ah, well.

I went to Toys R Us back when they were selling them for $30 but by the time I got there they were marked down to $20 instead.

Maybe actually I got one for $30 and then later saw one for $20, I really don't remember how much I paid for sure.

Speaking of Toys R Us, I heard a rumor that they were going out of business? Has anyone else heard anything like that? I mean, I don't go to Toys R Us much anymore but I think the world would be a sadder place without it. :(

It's rumored that Toys R Us might close down the toy retailing section of the business, since they've now become second in the nation to Wal-Mart. Supposedly their Babies R Us chain is much more profitable, percentage-wise.

Children's clothing. They might even market some clothing to teenagers... Though I think there might be a copyright issue with an adult company somewhere.

The 32X is very sensitive to sudden vibrations, which can occur when the machine is, for example, in a car or the van of the postal service.

Try opening the system and unscrewing the central metal plate. Next, use a pair of pliers or a tweezer to remove and re-insert the white colored ribbon-like cable. That usually fixes nearly all problems most people have with the 32X.

What about all those kids who don't want to grow up?

I have so many fond memories of Toys R Us. There were always these giant grasshoppers all over the outside windows, and then you'd walk in and you'd be blasted with cool air right at the door, then you'd enter the candy section just to whet your appetite. After that they'd have the games section, which was actually where I played Sonic 1 for the first time. It was awesome, all the games were on these glowing shelves in these glass cases, and it looked super sleek and futuristic. To this day, I still think they had the best game display that's ever been invented. And all the rows were super high and super long stocked to the brim with stuff. The board games, the action figures, and once you got through everything else, they had the Lego's, which used to be a billion times cooler than they are now. How many times I drooled over that giant, $100 pirate ship I cannot recall. I wanted it more than anything else in the universe.

That's all but a pleasant memory now, though. The store's fallen into complete disarray. The blast of air is gone, the floors are mildued, half the shelves have been outright removed so there's too much space and it just feels kind of like a creepy warehouse. The old cyber games section has been completely changed, now it's just like any other Wal Mart game section or something. Everytime I walk into it now in hopes of some nostalgia, it just reminds me, hard and cold, that my childhood is over and I can never go back.

Maybe it is time to close the whole operation down. I want to cry.

These are indeed sad times. I had an experience remarkably similar to Green's, only with a little Mexican kid telling me the up down left right a start code while I was in the store. I walked out of that store with a Genesis under my arm. What exactly was the logic behind the 32X, anyways?

"We don't need to make a new system, let's just keep on cramming crap onto the old one."

More or less. What with the Sega CD, and the 32X . . .

Looking back, you'd almost think that Sega was somehow clairvoyant enough to see it's future hardware problems coming, and wanted to stretch out the lifespan of the Genesis.

Would the Sega CD and 32X be considered separate systems?

If so, then the Genesis would've been the first backward compatible gaming system, right?

They needed the Genesis to function, so I wouldn't call them seperate systems.

According to Official Sega Saturn Magazine UK, Sega wanted to release more 3D arcade games for the Mega Drive using the SVP chip (which was originally designed for the 16-bit version of Virtua Racing) but the cost of producing the chip was too high. At the same time, Sega's own research indicated that the Saturn would be too expensive for significant portion of its existing customers.

Sega felt that the 32X was a solution to both of the above problems, allowing them to bring 3D arcade games to the Mega Drive at a low cost, which would be an attractive proposition to people who wanted a Saturn but couldn't afford it.

They felt their 32-bit systems would allow them to dominate the 32-bit market, as if consumers couldn’t afford to buy a Saturn they would buy a 32X. However, after the success of the Mega Drive, Sega became very arrogant. This prevented them from anticipating the success of the Playstation and from realising that in order to ensure a low price, the 32X simply wasn't powerful enough to run the 3D arcade games that people wanted.

Most of Sega’s teams were busy with the Saturn, limiting their resources for producing 32X games. Zyrinx, a little known development team, had found a way to make the 32X produce graphics that were comparable to first generation Saturn games, but by the time they started producing games that used the coding techniques, the system had died.

Given extra development time Chaotix could've made for a fantastic Saturn game.
