Re: James Marsden taking lead role in Sonic the Hedgehog mov
I'm not surprised Deadpool is so comparably low with its one CGI character that doesn't get much screentime. TMNT 2(?) is possibly the closest analogue with its prominent CGI abominations and kersplodey sets and such, so Sonic might actually be underbudget as it were.
Had no idea they were still making smurfs movies. If not, inflation might mean it's even more excessive. Outstanding.

Key emphasis on the plural of abominations here. For the greenscreening and CGI that's undoubtedly going to be utilized, I'm honestly surprised that Sonic is, so far, the sole completely CGI character that we know about. Sonic is (in)famous for having an ensemble cast, but at the very least, most people also think of Tails and Knuckles whenever they think of Sonic. And really, those three are really all you need to get differing reactions to being suddenly thrust into an another world, and all the motivations and subplots that might entail.TMNT 2(?) is possibly the closest analogue with its prominent CGI abominations
Plus, for all the novelty of seeing real-life actors interacting with animated characters, sometimes it's also fun to just see two cartoons bash heads together.

Tails and Knuckles were confirmed ages ago. Kinda makes one wonder how much they cost apiece. I imagine of the three Tails is the most expensive if the animators are true to his restless rump syndrome and generally more complex design.
It would be a touch mystifying if Amy is left out entirely, as surely there'll be pressures not just from marketing demand for a girly character to make tie-in plastic junk.
Maybe they should of saved one of the triumvirate for a tentative sequel.

So can we take this as an approximation of what the Sonic movie will look like, or will it be way, way worse?

When I first saw that trailer, I needed to double check that it wasn't a spoof. I know little about Pokemon, but that trailer just seems so bizarre. Especially Pikachu's voice which seems too sassy (Isn't he supposed to be a cute character?)

From my knowledge, Detective Pikachu is supposed to be sassy. That's his shtick. (Well, aside from the fact he can talk.)

There's an interview here about the design changes:
https://uk.ign.com/articles/2018/12/10/ ... ial-poster
From what little we can see, it looks like some fan character.

Good to know that we're going back to Sonic frigging X for our plot synopsis.

Re: James Marsden taking lead role in Sonic the Hedgehog mov
If you look very carefully, it looks like Sonic's eyes are sticking out, just like a real hedgehog.
Sega wasn't happy with Cubot/Orbot as they felt they wouldn't suit Dr Eggman, but gave in.
Then Sega wasn't happen with the Big Red Button's decision to use the CryEngine as Sega felt that engine wouldn't work so well on the WiiU and we all know how that turned out.
Why can't Sega ever put their foot down?IGN wrote: The most challenging part of Sonic’s updated design isn’t revealed in this teaser: his eyes. The filmmakers struggled with how best to depict Sonic’s eyes because often he’s only seen with one, and that wouldn’t translate well to the live-action movie.
“I don’t think SEGA was entirely happy with the eye decision, but these sorts of things you go, ‘It’s going to look weird if we don’t do this.’ But everything is a discussion, and that’s kind of the goal, which is to only change what’s necessary and stay true to the rest of it,” said Miller. “He’s not going to feel like a Pixar character would because I don’t think that’s the right aesthetic to make it feel like part of our world.”

Why couldn't they just use a nice 3D model of Sonic's standard design? It always looks so fucking weird when cartoon animals are given quasi-realistic muscles and bulges and whatnot.
Honestly, I almost get the impression that they haven't fully revealed this Sonic's face yet because they're hesitant to.

Did they just forget that Sonic wears socks? He's going to get some awful blisters.

Not only is this even more upsetting, (Paramount's aggressive disregard and SEGA's apathy..and those legs) but the Golden Gate Bridge? Twist that hot knife more into the wound of not getting a colorful pixar esque Sonic movie, or a gorgeous CG Sonic Adventure 2 movie, or the trilogy of sonic 2, 3 and Knuckles.

Call me crazy, but I like that new poster.
Someone claiming to have seen teaser footage of the movie at the CCXP event in Brazil last week says Sonic basically looks like this.
I can live with this.

I guess if that's the final result, I guess I'm okay with it too. The design does include some elements that I think would be beneficial for a Sonic interacting with live actors / environments, like the quills and the relatively muted colors.
But for the love of god, why did they mess with his porportions? Sonic's a freaking icon, everybody knows he's basically two balls with noodlely appendages. I guess you could argue that Sonic's modern design lacks enough weight to make his running believeable or exciting. But you can compensate for that in a lot of ways. Make him do more than run in a straight line, have him exploit his environment, perform acrobatics, spin into a ball, etc. etc.

You know what's putting me off most about the silhouette? It's not the Payless shoes, gross Hershey Kiss-nose, or extraneously tacked-on head spikes - it's the hands - dear god, the hands! They're fucking disgusting! Why are they so long? Why are his thumbs so far up? How many fingers will this monstrosity have!? Combined with the short, muscly appendages and fur, they make Sonic look like some kind of bizarre fetal chimpanzee.
Removing the gloves and socks is such an obvious, insulting, live action Alvin-and-the-Chipmunks-esque move, clearly leading into the acquisition of his shoes being a plot point. I imagine he'll slip into them, wink/grin right at the camera, and say something like "Yeah, that feels right!".

Mock-up poster from 2017, when Chris Pratt was being considered for the role of Tom.
I mean, it's not BAD, but it's.. A little too cute for my tastes.

Also, we nearly had Sheldon Cooper as the voice of Sonic.

This is a poster for a movie that I go, " well heck, not what I was thinking of...at all, but Sonic looks ok and I'm down for a try" assuming this is real, and the design is the same/ close, why on earth did they not lead with this poster? I would have said, "Huh, this looks intriguing". No snot nosed tween, a little bit of A stranger things vibe. Who at Paramount said "let us lead with thighs".?cjmcray wrote:

Jim Carrey briefly mentioned the Sonic movie at the Golden Globes last night.
Also some impressive pieces of fanart were made in the past week
I wonder if Sonic and Robotnik willactually look like this in the movie?
