PSO Comment--The Kabanda Mag

Post by The Doc »

I've never played any games in the PS series, but I'm looking at the original PSO page in the Museum and I come across this selection in Miscellanea:
Kabanda -- Have no clue. My research came up completely dry. If you possess knowledge regarding the mythos of Kabanda, please feel free to share.
Now, this is just speculation, but it may have been named after a Ugandan musician by the name of Bernard Kabanda. He was a pioneer in music and the (I'm assuming) creator of a style known as "Kadongo Kamu", a now-popular style of Ugandan music.

I speculate this because Kabanda died at age 40 on September 4, 1999--three weeks before PSO was announced. Perhaps they named one of the Mags "Kabanda" to commemorate Kabanda's legacy, or maybe I'm completely and utterly off-base.

Anyway, I just thought I'd bring this to your attention if it already wasn't. Here's the link I got my information off of:

Well, all the other mags are derived from Hindu mythology, so...

...So?

I mean, if I were to look up "Kabanda" in Hindu mythology and I didn't find anything, that would tell me that it has nothing to do with Hindu mythology. Unless, of course, those wacky Hindis are hiding some super ultra uber-secret and only told Yuji Naka like Kabanda is a Platypus or something. I know I'd be embarrassed if it were discovered that Jesus was one. Then again, I'm not Christian, but I digress.

OK, seriously. Not all of them HAVE to pertain to Hindu mythology. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the servers were given names from moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Uranus (no jokes now), the names of which derive from Greek mythology, but not all of them do. Some of them derived from Shakespeare. The background of the names doesn't necessarily have to be absolute.

All right, all right, bad example, but you know what I mean.

I guess the only true way to find out is to get it from the horse's mouth (read: DL Naka), and I seriously doubt that'll happen.

I was looking at a screenshot from the DC PSO and it seems several of the ships are spelled wrong in the Xbox version. What's that about? I dunno why I brought it up, but whatever.

The names of the DC ships are different than the ships in the Xbox version. They weren't quite as lame (Benitoite? What the fuck?)

There it is. You could actually play in the JP and EU servers, which was cool. I practically never did, but it was still cool that you could. And you need to tell me if you want that invite, you son of a bitch. Is that off topic? I think it is.

What are you talking about? I computer froze so I didn't get whatever AIM message you sent me this morning. If you are talking about Gmail Nathan already hooked me up.

Yeah, well, I've got only 2 invites left now, one of which I'm saving just in case I think of someone that I hadn't thought of before.

So yeah, if anyone wants that other one, whoever gets here first.

While we're at it, does anyone else want Gmail? I have a few more invitations left.

Ye mods get higher priority.

If you have an extra invite, I wouldn't mind if you hooked me up.

Bleh, I want to get rid of my last 2 invites. Send me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll get 'em to you.

EDIT: They're gone. Ask Segaholic and SF or something.

Google doesn't work for me.

I'm actually surprised that you took this conversation to Gmail and not something like "nekkid boobies"...
