"That's a good thing. We don't need to really worry about those people very much, because since they don't think it's possible they won't take us very seriously. And they will not actually try to stop us until it's too late."

That's pretty awesome, but;
- It's not underwater, to my eternal disappointment
$1.25 million is a lot of money, but it's nothing compared to what it will take to actually build even one of these things.
Still, would be something interesting if it ever gets beyond the theory stage these mega-habitat things always fall at.

When I saw the title, I assumed you meant the PayPal founder was trying to bring about Armageddon. Which would have been a far more interesting topic.

What I'm wondering is, why is this suddenly news *now*? Thiel has been involved with the Seasteaders for a while, IIRC.

Because on top of an oil rig isn't a place where building regulations are of vital concern to everyone interested in
not drowning. And yeah, no welfare or minimum wage is going to be a huge concern for all those billionaires who can afford a single-acre homestead on Beta Rapture.
