So Minecraft Pocket Edition is out on Android handsets. Has anybody bought it? Is anybody planning to buy it?
The biggest question I can't seem to find a definitive answer to is whether the gameplay is that of Minecraft classic or the beta. With the game leaning towards the more expensive of Android games - and mainly because I'm half a pence right now - I'm not sure I want to buy it until I know for sure. A reasonably complete beta experience would be well worth the £4.26 asking price, but a reiteration of the freebie classic mode with touchscreen controls, an input method not known for the precision Minecraft asks.. not so much.
What's your opinion?

Re: Minecraft Pocket Edition
While I haven't experienced Minecraft Pocket firsthand, the Minecraft Wiki states that Pocket Edition is "Creative" (read: Classic) mode, which is the one without any mining or crafting, just building. I wouldn't pay for it, especially since you can find it online for free.

I have not played minecraft and is it really that great? I keep hearing everybody saying it is amazing and that I don't like it because "I have no imagination and is gay."
I don't think it will be my kind of game because it's not linear at all. I hate sandbox games where I have the option to do anything I want because it turns into real life. I have so many options it makes me feel not like doing anything. I need a set goal to incline me to keep playing.

I'm kind of surprised to hear that Creative Mode is the only mode included in mobile Minecraft. My experience with the game has been exclusively with Survival.
I'm astounded by the things that some people can achieve in the game, but unless you don't mind cheating it'll take hours or even days of planning, gathering the necessary materials, and construction to complete your mega-projects. That's the problem I'm having with a large tower that I want to build over my base; I not only have to mine enough stone and smelt enough glass for it, but I must have a very clear plan of the tower to begin with; otherwise, monsters will spawn inside of it, rather defeating its purpose as a look-out. If you're the type of person who can be preoccupied making things with Legos for hours, you'd probably seriously enjoy Minecraft. Otherwise, it initially comes off as a neat concept that eventually gets tedious.
I wouldn't recommend buying Minecraft based on the issues with sandbox games that you describe. However, I know that the fan-made Aether mod comes with three varieties of somewhat randomized "dungeons", which adds some optional objectives to the game.

Minecraft looks ugly and I don't understand the appeal, but I'm told it's more addictive than crack, for whatever reason. And since I play more Warcraft than I can rationally justify, I'm in no position to judge.
Although if you're going to play it on Android, why not play it on the Xperia Play?

Don't you want to just smash it with your fist over and over?

Further research implies that it's a Play exclusive, at least for now. At any rate, the demo won't install on my Arc.
