Drawn to a very Depressing Death.
A couple of months ago I bought Drawn to Life Collection, mainly because it was only $4.99, but also because I have been on a bit of a DS game binge since January. Anyways, I had always wanted to play Drawn to Life because of the gimmick that you could draw your own character and a few other items. Anyways, DTLC also has Drawn to Life 2 on it, so I thought that'd be a nice bonus. Drawn to Life is a very cutesy game, yet there are a few odds and ends that don't quite add up. The game is all about platforming through 2D levels and rescuing little fox-squirrel things. So, about halfway through, you find a human and bring him back to your fox-squirrel village. There are no other humans in the game, and there is no explanation for finding this one, so I just passed it over as a nice Easter egg. Then, you find a fox-squirrel that has half of her body hideously burnt. Again, no explanation, I put it aside. Around the end of the game is where it starts telling you it's not shitting around anymore. A guy gets knifed, there's a sad song, roll credits.
The second game starts off with a pitch-black background and asks you "What happened that day?" and makes you draw a picture on the touch screen. I had no idea what happened "that day", and I just drew a stick figure with a hat and cane. Then, it shows you the enemy from the original game, the one who knifed the guy, who basically threatens to murder your fox-squirrels if you screw with him. Then, the game starts, and it's just like the first one. Very cute and kid-friendly.
Then, at the end, everything fades, and the credits roll without giving an ending. At the end of the credits, I was freaking dumbfounded. It was horrifying. Let me sum it up for you: The Human, it turns out, was in a car crash. The game takes place inside his head as he is in a coma. The burnt fox-thing is actually his sister, who's body was mangled in the car crash. "What happened that day?" is asked to you, the player, who witnessed the event. The human's parents were drunk driving, and were murdered.
This was in a fucking kids game!
This is one of those extremely colorful games, with visual styles akin to Kirby's Squeak Squad. There is no foreshadowing of this. It just turns out you were in a kid's coma the whole time. Wonderful.

I'm almost afraid to ask what the Scribblenauts games turn out to be inspired by.

You didn't see the ending to Super Scribblenauts?I'm almost afraid to ask what the Scribblenauts games turn out to be inspired by.
It's the maddened STD-caused fever dreams of a 10-year old Vatican scribe in ancient Rome attempting to compile a dictionary, and for every word he misspells the pope rapes him with a dickwolf.

That's almost as jarring a twist as Pirates II, a film my brother made me watch. After 10 minutes of a plot I was actually getting in to, it suddenly and without warning degenerated into pornography.
Also, Welcome.

I wonder how the SpongeBob versions wraps up, Sandy went rapid and infected half of Bikini Bottom while an oil spill killed the rest?
More seriously, 5th cell's games always seem really, really charming but equally mediocre. Now you've got me wanting to actually play these.

With the exception of Super Scribblenauts, they are dirt-cheap now. I remember when people were hyped as hell for Scribblenauts, now it's $15.99.

I tried Locke's Quest but couldn't motivate myself to finish it.

I've seen that for a tenner in a Meijer. I liked the look of it, but reminded myself I don't like tower defense/RTS games. Felt the same way about Starfy, too - completely unchallenging and overly saccharine.
I know when dot-pixel aesthetics become a thing of the past I'm going to regret it.

Lock's Quest is a disappointment of a game, especially when you compare it to 5th Cell's other games. It's just a basic tower defense game. Nothing interesting at all.

Same here. I really liked the concept, but there wasn't enough to it to keep me going.Zeta wrote:I tried Locke's Quest but couldn't motivate myself to finish it.

I kept on waiting for the "hook" that made the game interesting, but it never came. And the Tim Buckley art didn't help, either.
