So there I was, minding my own business...

Post by chriscaffee »

I was chilling in my new apartment about 40 minutes ago in the great state of South Carolina after a strenuous morning at the office when some kind of commotion broke out outside my door. Being a concerned citizen I decided to ignore the yelling and swearing up until I received a knock at my door. Half-dressed and caring less, I opened the door to see my neighbor who recommended to me that I move my car away from the one that was on fire 10 feet outside my door. Southern people are nothing if not courteous. I moved my car and snapped a few shots because, hey, how often are you that close to a flaming automobile in your life? I'm sure there is something of merit to be discussed here. If not, you can enjoy the fire, I suppose, content with the knowledge that your beloved Chris survived to post another day.

While I have several photos, I think this one through my front window best sums up the magnitude and proximity of the casualty:

I've been in Texas (Great State!) followed by sleepy Sasebo, Japan (I'm sure it would have been better if I had a place of my own and wasn't thousands of miles away from my loved ones!). Internet was sketchy in both locations (borrowed the neighbors in Texas, didn't have any in Japan) so I didn't get online too much. I did get a steady connection towards the end of my prolonged visit to Sasebo, but having been without online gaming for 18 months or so, that took up the majority of my Internet time.

Now that I'm back stateside I was fumbling around the Internet one day and came across this so-called "Sonic Generations." So I returned to my favorite forum to discuss it. Unfortunately GameFAQs didn't have a board up for the game yet, so I came here instead. I kid. I kid. I actually went to 4chan after GameFAQs failed me, but the threads recycle too fast on /v/ to keep up. After that disappointment, then I came here, which...

...also sort of coincided with me looking around the Internets to see how much of the Sonic fan community still existed. Other than a few places (well, other than this one) I haven't been on a Sonic fansite in years, and they seem to be all gone, replaced by wikis, DA, and fanfiction.net, which I guess is more convenient, but much less personal.

Anywho to keep a boring story boring, but not as long as it could be, that's where I was and why I'm back. That, and there was a car parked in front of my apartment this afternoon and it was on fire. I thought that needed to be shared.

Did you get in on any VOOT on 360 when that came out?

Of course. That goes without saying. It's one of only three games that I have every achievement for. I'm no good at it, but it's really fun! I think I actually like 5.45 better than 5.66 in terms of balance, but I guess you get three extra VRs so that's cool. Now that I'm back and my three Dreamcasts are out of storage (you can never have too many Dreamcasts), I can play both versions!

Oh, the other thing that disappointed me about the 360 version was the trial mode. In the Dreamcast you could basically setup a random map and random opponent and then it would just throw you into one match right after another. I think they took that trial mode out of the 5.66 version or changed it or something so it had a ridiculous amount of menus. (I'll have to double check.) I just remember being disappointed with that because that mode used to keep me entertained for hours on the Dreamcast. (I had exactly one friend IRL that even knew what Virtual On was. He was a Saturn Vet, but he would play me occasionally on the DC split screen.)

Huh, I was in Sasebo last summer as part of my travels through Kyushu. You're with the navy, then?

I actually played a few rounds of DC VOOT with an old friend the other night and was reminded how much of a blast the game can be provided both players know how to play. Really is one of my favorite competitive games of all time.

I don't want to talk about it.

It was always hard to play multiplayer for me. Folks online in the 360 version (who were Japanese because I lived in Japan) would destroy me in about 8 seconds. Back on the DC, nobody even played the game except for me so they would play like two matches and be done with it. I guess with the exception of this one other cat, not the Saturn Vet cat, this guy was a different cat.

Back way, way back the first time I lived in Texas before the first time I moved to Japan (It's a cycle, it's craziness) when VOOT first came out, I rented it at Blockbuster and took it over to a buddy's. This was also about the time that Toonami was airing Gundam Wing, so we go bananas over this game. You can't deny that Temjin's RWRT bares at least a passing resemblance to the Wing Gundam's Death Star rifle. We played this game probably for three days straight until HE managed to beat Tangram. There was possibly no sleep involved. What a great weekend for giant robots and the SEGA Dreamcast.

Even online in the US you still end up playing mostly Japanese players, finding someone outside Japan for me was actually pretty hard unless I arranged it beforehand. The connections were surprisingly good, I would get a laggy match only occasionally.

I remember reading somewhere that they share the same mechanical designer. By the way guys, Force is region free, if you're interested (also adjustable bot boobs).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hajime_Katoki

almost. Katoki(the virtual on designer) was actually only responsible for the Endless Waltz Designs and the Ver. Ka variations.
The original Wing designs were by Kunio Okawara.
