So, who here keeps and (more importantly) continues to play demos after deciding not to buy them? Can we turn this thread into a poll?

I remember when all I had of Sonic Adventure was a demo. I played that thing to hell 'cause, being a kid, I had no fucking money.

Wow, I didn't even think of that. I don't see how disabling the demo for a game a kid can't even buy is going to help Sony out--at best, the kid's going to think of it as some kind of holy grail that he only got to play once or twice, but at worst it could engender ill-will towards Sony, or the kid moves on to some other demo that will let him play longer, or he might even forget about the game with the degrading demo by the time he finally has the money.
I suppose the upside of it is that they could make longer demos that are later reduced to a normal demo length, but that's basically what time limit-based demos are doing right now. I wonder if anyone ever tried to sue the entire industry on the claim that he invented the time limit demo?

Wow, how incredibly stupid and out of touch with your user base can you be?

All things considered, the Vitality Sensor is INCREDIBLY in touch with Nintendo's userbase.
The kind that goes out, sees Wii Fit for $80, and grabs that shit up, desiring to try it out just after they complete a session of Wii Music and a slight workout in Wii Sports tennis. You just know they'll buy into whatever the heck that thing actually does.
Actually, if there was a legitimate action game that used it, maybe... Like, the angrier you are, the easier the game gets such that you get some satisfaction, but the more satisfied you get, the harder the game gets to compensate.
As for the degrading demos, didn't read the article much, but it could just be for a single save - play the entire game, but watch your save deteriorate, forcing you to start anew. I dunno.

What "games" are even going to use the vitality sensor? God, I hate pretty much everything Nintendo does now.

You hate everyone and everything, so what's the difference?

ad hominem
I hate stupid things and bad things. The vitality sensor is stupid. And probably bad. Are you trying to imply otherwise?

G.Silver, I was saving game demos that I didn't like for a while, but now I'm down to about 9GB on my PS3, so I delete the ones I know I won't go back to.
This degrading demos thing doesn't bother me that much. It's not like I play most demos more than a couple of times anyway (the ones for Heavy Rain and All-Star Racing I played more than most though). The way Kotaku put it, it sounds like they're going to have bigger demos that slowly have features taken away. So they're probably going to be bigger than normal demos.
And they're just demos. If it's something you really want to keep playing, you can just go buy the full game.

I fail to see who benefits from this.
As a kid I'd play the hell out of demo discs because I couldn't afford every game I wanted, and sometimes (pre-Internet access) they just wouldn't be available at the local stores. The demos would keep the games fresh in my mind, and with Internet enabled consoles now more than ever demos can be used as a long-term marketing strategy. Turning them into a short-term marketing strategy seems... short-sighted.

There's also a historical significance to demo disks, too, surely. Aren't demos often the only things left of years of hard, fruitless labor where a game gets canceled just before it goes gold and the source code is destroyed by a disgruntled employee?

I was thinking about trying to squeeze my penis in it to see what happens. Otherwise I can just use the one at the mall from the 1970s that takes dimes.

This is pretty much my thinking, like you say. I just don't see why they'd bother to do it.
