Stuck on Game Gear Sonic games

Vlad the Vampire (of Sonic website Sonic-online.net) very kindly scanned both the Japanese manuals of Sonic & Tails 2 and Sonic Labyrinth and sent them to Crazy Penguin who forwarded them onto me. At last the finer details of these games, such as enemy names and attack moves, can be known. ^_^

Sonic Labyrinth Manual – This contains some imaginative art work in the story section (The story has already been translated into English). (Click here to download it)

Sonic & Tails 2 Manual - (Hosting courtesy of Segaholic2) – This features new artwork plus profiles on all the characters.

It would be good if a Japanese reader could have a quick skim read of at least just the Knuckles profile, if only to see if it mentions if Knuckles already knew who Sonic was (as the story, which has already been translated into English, seems to suggest he doesn’t and so in turn explicitly places the game into a separate continuity from Sonic Team’s games):

Vlad the Vampire also very kindly scanned some previously unseen pages from an alternative version of the official Japanese Sonic Advance strategy guide, but you’ll have to wait until tomorrow for these.

You can upload zip files, y'know. :p That might save you a little bit of work.

I was going to do that originally, but each file is only permitted to hold 500K and most of the zips I made were slightly over that limit (even when they just contained 2 scans). ^_^

Okay, I'll up the limit. 2.5mb better?

Man, I love the art style they used for these things. Sigh!

Sweeeeet. I think that's everything, isn't it? Are there any we're still missing?

Incidentally, I just updated the Sonic 1 page a couple days ago. (I should have the front page updated tonight or tomorrow.) There's now, like, a ridiculous amount of information.

One thing I discovered that I never knew is that there are two types of Meleon in Green Hill. There are the blue ones that drop off and dash at you, but there are also green ones that just shoot at you. It's cool, but almost unsettling to discover something new about a game you've been playing for the past 13 years.

Today is yesterday’s tommorw and so, as promised, here are the scans that Vlad (of Sonic-online.net) very kindly made of the Sonic Advance strategy guide:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/big_smile/ ... on%202.zip

Sega Japan is the major shareholder in the publishing company Aspect (I think) and so often produces official strategy guides in association with the company (Sonic Team usually prefers working with Shogakukan). These scans come from the Aspect book (whereas the ones Bakari made came from the Shogakukan version).

Crazy Penguin also made this observation:
just like Mecha Sonic in the Sonic Jam guide, it seems that the Angel Island Zone boss is called "Mecha Knuckles" in Japanese but "Mechanical Knuckles" (or "Knackles" as it was mispelled) when written in English
^_^

The GHZ museum pages have always been very professional, but adding the robot/item sprites makes it look like an official Sonic Team strategy guide – it’s a brilliant addition. ^_^
Sonic 1 page wrote: (The Robotnik name would later be intentionally phased out with Sonic Adventure, but interestingly, was officially acknowledged even in the Japanese continuum with Sonic Adventure 2.)
There was actually a very subtle acknowledgement of the Robotnik name in Sonic Adventure. Before Amy plays Hedgehog Hammer, the name on the score board reads, “Dr Robotnikâ€￾ (Although, I’m not sure if this was present in the original December 23 1998 release of Sonic Adventure):

I was wondering if it would be a good idea to include english names of badniks and such in the museum, just a suggestion though probably a wrong one.

BTW, the Sonic the hedgehog page looks awesome.

I could, but if I were gonna do that, it would also make sense to include the French, German, and Italian names (and they are different). It's too much of a hassle and largely irrelevant. That's one of the reasons I included the enemy sprites on the page, so even if readers aren't familiar with the Japanese names, they'll still be able to identify what bot I'm talking about.

I love the use of sprites on the Sonic 1 page, and the enemy descriptions being seperate from the levels, ala the SA2 page. One thing I would also add though, is which animals appear in which stages.

I notice you don't mention the second Japanese version of Sonic 1 though, which fixes the "spike bug".

And will you be adding the Egg Mobile-H and Egg Mobile-D names to the Sonic 1, 2 and S&K pages or just the Sonic Advance page?

I actually almost added that... I might still.

Also, uh... what's Egg Mobile-H and Egg Mobile-D?

Since we're on the Sonic 1 page, I'll say that the use of sprites for enemies detail was superb. I wish to see more.
