Has anyone tried the Segasonic rom on the latest version of mame? It's been a few versions since I last tried it, so I figured I'd take another crack at it, even though it's still labeled with the "not working" message. It's possible to get past the character select screen and actually begin the game now. There are still alot of graphical and control problems, but I was able to play a bit without encountering any major issues.
Has anyone else messed around with this? How far can you get before something big turns up?

So far, I've been able to wing it to Icy Isle. The game freaks out when the icicles fall on you. I suppose it's theoretically possible to not let the icicles fall on you, but I'm not that good.
Just out of curiosity, what is game protection? It seems to be a problem with the emulation on almost every System 16 and 32 game.

There is a level select code out there somewhere that lets you skip past the ice level. From there I've gotten up to the final stage. (Where I got a game over, you'll see why)
Here...

This is for Mame32. I dunno if it'll work with other versions of Mame, but I don't see why not. Basically, this is the cheat file for stage select. To enable it, load up any level and then access Mame's in-game config menu (done by pressing Tab or ~ or whatever). Find your way to cheats, and enable stage select.
Exit out and go back to the game and you should be presented with a menu you can scroll through. I'm not quite sure what stage was to come after the Ice Stage, but it appears Stage A puts you at the start of Desert Dodge (which came right after the Ice Stage in the beta).
Have fun.
Edit: Should probably mention - it goes in the same place as the mame.exe (or mame32.exe, or whatever you are using)

It's similar to "making a pirate". Alt + F4.

Pirates are not simply just "made." We are bred through rigorous training, experience, and countless mugs of b33r.
Now say something that sounds remotely bad about us again and I'll get Blackbeared and Pierce and we'll womp all over your non-piratical ass.
Yarrr.
