Gentlemen?

Post by K2J »

So I'm thinking about getting Team Fortress 2. I've never really been a FPS fan, but the style and teamwork aspects are things that I think I would really like. Plus, there's all sorts of fun stuff being done by the fans in terms of remixes and such (oh, and Meet the Spy was leaked today - ironic). I've been kind of low on playing video games recently, and perhaps a Western-developed game - the first for me in a while - would be a nice change of pace?

Does anyone have any recommendations on the game? How easy is it to get into, especially for someone whose only experience with FPS's are sections of Banjo-Tooie? If not, any other games you could recommend for someone who's usually a Nintendo nerd, but wants to see some of the better PC games?

Oh god get it get get it. Get it now.

As someone who has spent his entire life playing JRPGs, Pokemon and platformers and Mario Kart I can tell you right now that Team Fortress 2 is the only FPS I've ever enjoyed. It is so much fun and so hilarious. It is incredibly easy to get into. TF2 is the only FPS I'll even touch.

For a FPS beginner, I'd recommend the Soldier, Pyro, and Medic classes to really get the hang of the game. Do not touch Spy until you are ready, you will be raped to death.

Also, Spy/Sniper update yay.

It's pretty good, but it seems that Valve keeps trying to make the game worse with every update. Also, Left 4 Dead is more fun just because it's easier to grief people in.

I would get Left 4 Dead instead. I have had TF2 since release and I played it for 5 minutes. The Left 4 Dead demo seems way more fun.

Didn't we have this topic before? Someone asks about TF2, someone bitches about the new weapons, and someone talks about how much better Left 4 Dead is?

Honestly, I feel like TF2 is too much work for me to enjoy. Having never really played a game like it and constantly being surrounded by people who have and are good at it is discouraging. In order to "gain the levels" necessary for me to play the game and feel good about it (like, say, being able to kill two enemies before someone kills me!) would take more time than I'd care to invest right now. The matches take a long time and there's no single player mode to get a feel for the maps that everyone online seems to know like the back of their hands. If I take time to experiment or fool around, I feel as if I am letting everyone down!

But really, how much does the game even cost now? Can't you get Orange Box for like $20? EVERYONE should own TF2 by now just because of Portal being packed with it! (This is why, even though I personally haven't had a great experience with it, I don't actually hold any negative feelings for the game at all, it's just everything to do with my own lack of time to spend on it)

I think I played TF2 for about an hour, was amused, then went and played Portal again.

It's really worth joining a clan if you wanna get serious with TF2, or at least get a few buddies together on an achievement server and grind for the extra weapons. For me, it's one of those games that either delivers hours of varied and rewarding gameplay, or five minutes of getting completely obliterated and rage-quitting. It's worth a shot though, there's nothing else really like it, especially as the Orange Box contains a shitload of awesomeness in various forms. L4D slightly trumps it by being almost entirely co-op, so you never really get that "oh this guy is way better than me, fuck this game" thing.

Bee tee dubya, I believe you can find me as jman_tbh on Steam. Add me, fools. Let's get a session happening one of these evenings.

Meanwhile, we Xbox players still sit around with no updates at all.
Perhaps not that bad for the balance though...

I never really was on your side.

Oh, I get it. Scar Tissue. I thought it might be Skat Issue. Which would be a whole different kettle of fish. Or Skat.

I thought it was a play on that. Ska Tissue.

Like a dub/reggae cover band that specializes in RHCP.

Upon giving it some thought, I realized that I would be very interested in reggae/dub covers of RHCP.

And I would not be interested in seeing a charming British man dealing with human waste.

Unless it was Clive Owen.

Pft, Clive Owen. I taught him everything he knows.

Hey Baba, wanna move to small-town UK and join my acoustic ska cover band? After that, all we need is some bongos and we're set.

It's a dream I've had since I was a young boy in two-tone shoes.

Sonic = Scout
Knuckles = Soldier
Metal Sonic = Pyro
Bean = Demoman
Bark = Heavy
Tails = Engineer
Amy = Medic
Fang = Sniper
Espio = Spy
Eggman = Announcer

RED Team = CONTROL Team
BLU Team = CHAOS Team

Control Point = Star Post
Intelligence = Chaos Emerald

Dr. Robotnik not being the engineer seems just wrong, if yet it would be hard to assign a different role to Tails. Aside from that, brilliant. The teams could alternatively be named SOUTH ISLAND team and ANGEL ISLAND team though. And too bad Bark fills the Heavy's role so well, otherwise Heavy the Eggman's Mechanic would suit it too.
