I know latinoes are generally short, but was it necessary for little Mac to be retconned as one after he's long been established as white? Regardless, this is a day one purchase for me.

That's some nice animation, but I'm not entirely sold. I'm not sure how good a fighting game with a single playable character and only 3 moves can be. I was hoping the franchise would be expanded to choose characters other than Little Mac and have them all developed on their own. Instead, it just looks like they took the SNES game and made it 3D.

Maybe. But at least the SNES game was good. (NES too, of course.)

Not to start a flame war or anything, but hasn't Nintendo by and large been making the same games over and over with better graphics for a while now?

Nintendo's been making the same good games over and over. Sega's been making different bad games over and over. I guess that's the difference.

For the record, I would be very happy if Sega could 'Just take Sonic2/3/&K and make it 2.5D.' (In game play, not a straight remake.)

I'm surprised they kept the bike scene in.

Well, Super Mario Galaxy had a good deal more actual content than Super Mario Brothers. Hell, Super Mario Brothers 3 had more.

As Zeta said, it's a bit silly if this still only has basically the same content as the first Punch Out (although it's possible that there's alot more than they're showing here).

Dude its cult; they have to keep it in. And no not for the reason you’re thinking. Everyone's long since forgotten the "Nigga Stole Meh Bike" line since they have been available in the double variety for some time.

I'll bet they include a lot more content. Nintendo always like to give the community their fan-fare.

Generalising a bit, are not you?

I never really liked this game, so I do not care. I will look forward to the new 'nigga stole my bike' things, though.

OK, so this isn't even the SNES Punch-Out. It's just a 3D remake of the NES Punch-Out with 2 more characters and a 2-player mode. Lame. There go my hopes that this would be something Nintendo would put EFFORT into. This game better be sold for 20 bucks or something. I can't imagine someone paying 50 bucks for a remake of a NES game that was short and simple to begin with.

I don't know about that. With Balance Board support just confirmed I have a feeling this is going to control well with the motion controls. That and you go NES style if you prefer that. Plus this came from the same developer who made the first Wii game to have Wi-Fi and the Striker games were very challenging so I expect no less from Next level Games.

Punch Out Wii Balance Board Support.

Remember when it was just Sonic and it only lasted a half hour. Notice how everyone--especially here--consider that the pinnacle of the franchise. Remember those games cost 75 dollars?

This is the problem with the industry today. Instead of a solid game, everyone wants a barely tolerable time-sink. Instead of cramming in a bunch of superflous moves to accomplish one task, why not see how many tasks a few fun moves can do.

Every modern game would be "short and simple" if you cut out all the shit people gripe about anyways.

As for me, I'm looking forward to a game I can beat in an afternoon and subsequently master through later replays. If I added the total amount of time I've put into replaying Sonic 2 and compared it to any more "fleshed-out" game I've recently played, I'd say the latter was less bang for my buck.

No matter how you try to spin this, it's still just a remake of a game you can get for 10 dollars in 3D, and a game that was short to begin with. And by short, I just don't mean in time, but in shalloweness. I get sick of long games as well, but I enjoy temporary depth more than longterm grinding. This game doesn't look like it has either. It is, as I said, like a version of Street Fighter where you only play as Ryu and only have three moves.

More like a version of Street Fighter where you can only play as Balrog and no one can jump.

"DON'T STOP ME!!"

Even if we allow for the possibility that the basic on-off nature of Little Mac's attacks in Punch Out (really, it's a bit like a quick time event!) are interesting enough to make the game worthwhile, I find watching these videos really surreal. On the NES, with such limited graphic ability, I think Punch Out is still charming even now, but when I see such fluid motion applied to the exact same gameplay, the limitations just become really obvious and a little surreal. Some people might go for it, heck, I might even go for it, but I have to agree that this would be a strange thing to see at $50.

When people are griping about the price of MadWorld at $50, all Punch Out really has going for it by comparison is classic branding.

This is a bit premature for a game that has yet to hit the market. And apples and oranges; street fighter and punch out aren't the same thing. With its control scheme how could any other fighter be anything more than a pallete swap to little mac? The game is built around his stature. As much as I'd like to play as King Hippo, I don't want to play as a transparent King Hippo.

Sure the original games were QTEs and it's a safe bet this one will be too, but they're fun QTEs.

Different attack speed, attack damage, speed of dodging and guarding, health, target size, reach, and each having a special attack ala Star Uppercut but with different effects is what I was naively expecting.

Interesting interview...
GamePro: Who do you want to adress with this remake, old fans or new audiences?
Kensuke "Kenji" Tanabe: To be honest: at first hand, old fans. We love the original and have -hopefully just like your readers - many fond memories of it. But we think it's with the new controls we can also create new fans of the series. I mean: everyone on the world knows how to hit someone right? It's also easy to learn, and the true game mechanics are tried and tested and easy to learn.

GamePro: In comparison to other current games, the amount of characters is a little poor with 13 fighters. Is there more to unlock or download?
Tanabe: Oh, there's gonna be a lot to unlock! For example characters, new ring surroundings, challenges, vicory animations, etc. We packed the disc to the brim and there were a few things we had to leave out because there wasn't any space left. We're the first internal Nintendo dev team that came across this problem with the Wii DVDs, so you're definitely getting a lot of things!

GamePro: Are there going to be minigames?
Tanabe: Not really. But there are a lot of challenges that don't take place in the ring. Like tutorials, trainings, etc. But we're not going to talk more about that yet.

GamePro: What about multiplayer?
Tanabe: We're can't tell you anything about that either. Just this: our multiplater mode will feature two players maximum, to put more people in the ring just doesn't make any sense. Our focus is the single player mode.

GamePro: Just like the original the new Punch-Out!! uses a lot of stereotypes, the arrogant German, the Frenchman with his croissants etc. Is using these clichés still alright in this age of political corectness?
Tanabe: Well, we're not too concerned about that. They're characters, like something from comic books. Obviously we don't think all the French just eat baguettes, scream for their mommys and have a glass skin. Our Glass Joe is exactly like that, but that all there's to it.

GamePro: Why Punch-Out!!? Nintendo has - besides the usual suspects Mario, Zelda, etc. - a lot of old classics which deserve a new iteration. Like Ice Climber, or Rad Racer. Is there more to come?
Tanabe: I'm obviously not going to reveal other titles, but it's like this: we look at all the classics and ask ourselves if we can improve the game in a meaningful way with a Wii version. Just like it's the case with Punch-Out!!. When we notice an old game improves with new controls, we will consider a remake.

GamePro: Last question: Why can't Mario be the referee anymore?
Tanabe: Miyamoto wouldn't allow it. No just kidding, actually there's a much more practical reason for it. For exampre he just doesn't fit the graphical style of the remake. To make him look good in the ring, we would have to adjust his physical measurements. But then he wouldn't be Mario anymore.

I'm not cautiously optimistic.

How could a character be faster than the player that the game is motion sensoring?

Oops, didn't Square make Rad Racer?

Also, why would anyone want a remake of an old Outrun knockoff when they could just have Outrun 2?
