Well, Super Mario Galaxy had a good deal more actual content than Super Mario Brothers. Hell, Super Mario Brothers 3 had more.MiraiTails wrote:Not to start a flame war or anything, but hasn't Nintendo by and large been making the same games over and over with better graphics for a while now?
Dude its cult; they have to keep it in. And no not for the reason you’re thinking. Everyone's long since forgotten the "Nigga Stole Meh Bike" line since they have been available in the double variety for some time.K2J wrote:I'm surprised they kept the bike scene in.
Generalising a bit, are not you?MiraiTails wrote:Maybe. But at least the SNES game was good. (NES too, of course.)
Not to start a flame war or anything, but hasn't Nintendo by and large been making the same games over and over with better graphics for a while now?
Nintendo's been making the same good games over and over. Sega's been making different bad games over and over. I guess that's the difference.
For the record, I would be very happy if Sega could 'Just take Sonic2/3/&K and make it 2.5D.' (In game play, not a straight remake.)

There go my hopes that this would be something Nintendo would put EFFORT into. This game better be sold for 20 bucks or something. I can't imagine someone paying 50 bucks for a remake of a NES game that was short and simple to begin with.
Remember when it was just Sonic and it only lasted a half hour. Notice how everyone--especially here--consider that the pinnacle of the franchise. Remember those games cost 75 dollars?Zeta wrote:OK, so this isn't even the SNES Punch-Out. It's just a 3D remake of the NES Punch-Out with 2 more characters and a 2-player mode. Lame. No matter how you try to spin this, it's still just a remake of a game you can get for 10 dollars in 3D, and a game that was short to begin with. And by short, I just don't mean in time, but in shalloweness. I get sick of long games as well, but I enjoy temporary depth more than longterm grinding. This game doesn't look like it has either. It is, as I said, like a version of Street Fighter where you only play as Ryu and only have three moves.Remember when it was just Sonic and it only lasted a half hour. This is the problem with the industry today. Instead of a solid game, everyone wants a barely tolerable time-sink. Instead of cramming in a bunch of superflous moves to accomplish one task, why not see how many tasks a few fun moves can do.
Every modern game would be "short and simple" if you cut out all the shit people gripe about anyways.
As for me, I'm looking forward to a game I can beat in an afternoon and subsequently master through later replays. If I added the total amount of time I've put into replaying Sonic 2 and compared it to any more "fleshed-out" game I've recently played, I'd say the latter was less bang for my buck.
Different attack speed, attack damage, speed of dodging and guarding, health, target size, reach, and each having a special attack ala Star Uppercut but with different effects is what I was naively expecting. With its control scheme how could any other fighter be anything more than a pallete swap to little mac?

GamePro: Who do you want to adress with this remake, old fans or new audiences?
Kensuke "Kenji" Tanabe: To be honest: at first hand, old fans. We love the original and have -hopefully just like your readers - many fond memories of it. But we think it's with the new controls we can also create new fans of the series. I mean: everyone on the world knows how to hit someone right? It's also easy to learn, and the true game mechanics are tried and tested and easy to learn.
GamePro: In comparison to other current games, the amount of characters is a little poor with 13 fighters. Is there more to unlock or download?
Tanabe: Oh, there's gonna be a lot to unlock! For example characters, new ring surroundings, challenges, vicory animations, etc. We packed the disc to the brim and there were a few things we had to leave out because there wasn't any space left. We're the first internal Nintendo dev team that came across this problem with the Wii DVDs, so you're definitely getting a lot of things!
GamePro: Are there going to be minigames?
Tanabe: Not really. But there are a lot of challenges that don't take place in the ring. Like tutorials, trainings, etc. But we're not going to talk more about that yet.
GamePro: What about multiplayer?
Tanabe: We're can't tell you anything about that either. Just this: our multiplater mode will feature two players maximum, to put more people in the ring just doesn't make any sense. Our focus is the single player mode.
GamePro: Just like the original the new Punch-Out!! uses a lot of stereotypes, the arrogant German, the Frenchman with his croissants etc. Is using these clichés still alright in this age of political corectness?
Tanabe: Well, we're not too concerned about that. They're characters, like something from comic books. Obviously we don't think all the French just eat baguettes, scream for their mommys and have a glass skin. Our Glass Joe is exactly like that, but that all there's to it.
GamePro: Why Punch-Out!!? Nintendo has - besides the usual suspects Mario, Zelda, etc. - a lot of old classics which deserve a new iteration. Like Ice Climber, or Rad Racer. Is there more to come?
Tanabe: I'm obviously not going to reveal other titles, but it's like this: we look at all the classics and ask ourselves if we can improve the game in a meaningful way with a Wii version. Just like it's the case with Punch-Out!!. When we notice an old game improves with new controls, we will consider a remake.
GamePro: Last question: Why can't Mario be the referee anymore?
Tanabe: Miyamoto wouldn't allow it. No just kidding, actually there's a much more practical reason for it. For exampre he just doesn't fit the graphical style of the remake. To make him look good in the ring, we would have to adjust his physical measurements. But then he wouldn't be Mario anymore.
I'm not cautiously optimistic.GamePro: In comparison to other current games, the amount of characters is a little poor with 13 fighters. Is there more to unlock or download?
