More Mario & Sonic at the Olympics?

A winter Olympics themed Mario & Sonic game is rumored to be the way with Eurogamer claiming they've had confirmation of it from a secret source.

Considering how successful Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games ended up being this is hardly a surprise. It was still appearing in the UK top 10 game charts over the Christmas period. I just think it's a little sad that of all the possible crossover games they could come up they're happy just to use the characters to help sell Olympic themed sports minigame collections.

I find it kind it kind of sad that M&S at the Summer Olympics is Sega's most successful game this gen...possibly ever.

I suppose, given the OBSCENE success of the first game, that making a Winter Olympics-themed version was only a matter of time...

I'm really surprised to hear this, but given that a sequal was made for both Rivals and Riders, I suppose I shouldn't.

How much do you want to bet that they'll put skiing in it, and that the only way to play it is to get a Balance Board (which, in turn, is only available with Wii Fit)?

I hope they don't realize that just because a game comes out with a new accessory, it doesn't mean every Wii owner gets it.

Well, what about those who do have a balance board? So far mine's collecting dust, and I thought the thing had more potential use than just telling me how uncoordinated I am.

I wonder, though, how are they going to fit Bowser in a bob-sled?

Didn't bother buying or renting Shawn White Snowboarding?

The same way they fit him in a go kart. ;P

Neither Shawn White or this has my interest. I suck at the snowboarding mini-game in Wii-Fit, anyways.

When I bought the thing, I was anticipating Punch Out and whatever super-secret project Square/Enix promised. (I can only imagine standing upright for the duration of an RPG.)

You know, I don't think a Sonic and Mario platformer would work, because their playstyles are so different. What WOULD work though, is Paper Mario & Sonic Chronciles. Now that's an RPG I would pay cash for.

I don't know, I think it would be kinda cool to see Mario circa-SMW running around the stages from Sonic 1, and Sonic circa-Sonic 3 running around the stages from SMW.

There's this fangame that managed to incorporate such an idea pretty smoothly called Mushroom Kingdom Fusion. Definitely worth a look compared to many other fangames.

I'd play it only if everything is the Paper Mario art style, and Intelligent Systems is the only company involved in creating the game. Screw whatever C-team Bioware assembled for SC.

How would Sonic characters even look in the Paper Mario artstyle? I guess Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Wario, Sonic, Tails, Amy, Knuckles, Cream and Eggman would be the party. I'm trying to imagine them all together done in a 2D Paper Mario artstyle with a six-character battle system fighting aliens, robots, Count Bleck, and techno echidnas, and it would either be hilarious or scary.

It might be interesting to divide the Sonic characters and Mario characters into two teams, and control them each at different segments of the story. For instance, in the beginning the game, you're able to control Mario and Luigi. At a certain point (at some climatic cliffhanger, perhaps?), you shift control to Sonic and Tails and establish the beginnings of their half of the story. Then you switch back to the Mario characters, then Sonic characters, and so on an so forth until the two teams united near the end of the game. Kind of like the two Golden Sun games, except within a single title. At various points, Sonic or Mario characters would temporarily switch to the other team (I'm thinking that a party of Wario, Bowser and Shadow would be pretty sweet), to keep gameplay interesting. Does that sound feasible in a single RPG title?

Also, a 2-D overworld perspective (mentioned by somebody on the Sonic Chronicles news thread concerning a new hypothetical Sonic RPG) would work well to highlight the best aspects of the Mario and Sonic series, and should allow for absolutely gorgous art direction. Oh, and the final boss should be some omnipotent interdimensional being, ala Tabuu, but much, much more badass. I was kinda disappointed how easily Tabuu was defeated...

*EDIT*

I know this sounds obvious, but SEGA absolutely cannot forget to stick some sort of snowboarding event into this new Mario/Sonic game. Not doing so would be heretical.

For one thing, there would probably be an absence of legs.

The name "Paper Mario" was play on Mario's moniker "Super Mario", so "Paper Sonic" just doesnt sound anywhere near as good. "Sonic the Paper" is the way to go i tell's yer!

The sequel will feature Shadow as the main character. And he'll use scissors.
