some of the more difficult character names will be changed.
Yeah, that tends to happen, three things would happen

1 - The Japanese Names are left alone

2 - The First Names are only changed

3 - First and Last Names are changed

EDIT: Look at my new avatar!!! Some Burning Rangers Girl, She looks good...non-platonically

I despise 4Kids and absolutely hate seeing them get their hands on anything on principle, no matter how childish or lucrative the title may be. However, I actually like Naruto just enough to evoke unforgiving rage towards them should they obtain the license. The scariest part is that 4Kids is fully capable of having poritons of the show reanimated to be suitable for Saturday morning, seeing as how many parts are pretty much uneditable as they are.

However, Chris Macdonald from Anime News Network had this to say on the subject:
Besides, 4Kids isn't going to license Naruto.

Ooops, did I say that?
If anyone's in the know, it's him, so that gives me some hope.

But still, I can't imagine how they're going to defile One Piece this fall. And I always in the minority of people who liked it more than Naruto, too.

I still have hope for One Piece. A vague, sliver of hope. Besides, the deal is: You see anime for free on TV, it's gonna be edited. Wether it's to boost DVD sales or to actually edit out content kids aren't supposed to see, it'll be edited. With 4KIDs slowly buckling in to the trend of releasing uncut subbed DVDs of their properties, well, whatever. One Piece is One Piece. So Sanji's cig is gone. At least they're keeping the opening theme (just inserting goofy english lyrics).

Good fansubbers(you know the ones that are close to accurate in translation) drop a show when it's been licensed.

The obvious solution is to learn Japanese.

I say we march over to Japan, wave some guns around, and force them to make all anime in English. Problem solved. Everybody's happy.

The problem with 4Kids isn't the content edits (because they're actually quite lenient when it comes to violence. In fact, I heard that some blood actually slipped through on an episode of Shaman King), it's the stupid, pointless changes they always insist on making. Changing the background music, changing names, dumbing down characterizations whenever possible, and trying to erase any evidence that the show came from Japan. Of course, when it comes to cultural references, One Piece is pretty safe because it has to be one of the least Japanese shows out there, but that's not going to stop them from taking liberties with alterations.

Also keep in mind that there's no guarantee of an uncut release.

The fact that they're (supposedly) using the original theme is the only thing giving me hope right now. And the Japanese lyrics were goofier.

That simply won't work. First, you'll have to deal with the Yakuza, and even though they're stupid enough to bring katanas to a gun fight, they're a bunch of crazy bastards.... Then, you'll have to fight all the magical schoolgirls and giant robots.

I personally really don't care who licenses Naruto... There's so many people doing relatively decent fansubs of it that I think fansubbing will continue even after some American company begins to butcher it.

But if it does get licensed, and the fansubs stop, it's really going to suck for me. I'm already at episode 85, and if the fansubs stop, its gonna take a few years for the domestic releases to catch up to the point that I'm at...

Gib will keep the schoolgirls occupied. Either through seduction, or inspiring a mix horror, pity, and disbelieving laughter.

And I'll bring Uma Thurman to handle the Yakuza.

Do you think Robert Smith, Leonard Maltin, and Sidney Poitier will be able to handle the giant robots on their own? Or should I bring back-up?

And yes, the annoying thing about 4Kids is the pointless name changes and deletion of ANYTHING even remotely related to another culture. If there was a One Piece episode about Guy Fawkes day, for instance - it would be totally cut. Because Americans can't be bothered to think of anybody but themselves.

Same thing with names. They think people in the US can't mentally process names if they're not anglo-roman.

Although for some reason, Yugi and Kaiba from YuGiOh managed to escape completely unaltered. How did that happen? 4Kids normally would've called them something random or derivative - like "Josh" and "Seth".

'Course, Saban was the worst. I admit to watching Digimon, and one of the characters in the third series was an 11-year old version of Trinity from "The Matrix" (I'm serious). Anyways - her original name was "Ruki", but it got changed to "Rika". What the FUCK?! How the hell is Rika any better than Ruki? They both sound foreign. And they changed the name of an American kid from "Wallace" to "Willis"! Aargh! Senseless changes.

But I digress.

4Kids should be put out of buisness for their awful dubbings. I fear for One Piece, now that it's in their evil clutches. They'll probably change "Nami" to "Nancy" or something.

For the record, I'd rather watch an anime in pure Japanese without subtitles than watch the slaughtered and degraded 4Kids version. >_<
What 4Kids does to anime is pretty much unforgivable. Perhaps they're secretly a company that hates anime and wants to stop it? Just a thought.

Quoted for truth.

Yuugi didn't eacape completely unscathed: Yuugi Mutou -> Yugi Moto. I feel dirty for having said that. Seto's brother Mokuba escaped unscathed too, though...

Heh, if the animation is good enough I'd say that about pretty much every company.

Okay, remember that quote I posted earlier? I just got some "through the grapevine" confirmation from ANN that Naruto is licensed, and not by 4Kids.

I don't know who though, and neither does my source.

It was me. I licensed it.

Naruto's new name is "Carl," and his dream is to become the greatest Shaolin Chef of all time. All of the ninja stars in the show will be digitally replaced with pastry rolls.
