Unluckily for me, I picked a seal clubber, which it now seems is the most underpowered class. Oh well, it's just a game.

Oh, and one way to go up in levels rapidly is to buy underpriced items from the mall of loathing, and then sell them in the inventory screen. You'll soon have enough money to buy all the strongness potions in the universe, or whatever you need to climb those levels.

Gyms are for sellouts (and drunks, a category which I usually fit into quite nicely). I level up by questin' for stock for my Mall store. Quest = items collected + exp = money from teh mall + levelling up = TEH WIN. So there.
