I am now seriously jazzed for this movie. Haven't been more excited after a trailer since the original TRANSFORMERS teaser trailer was released in July '06.

*GAAAAAAAAASP*

If doesn't have any of those aforementioned overly dramatic gasps, I'm not interested.

Well, they DO include the ever-famous "autojack" noise. I give them extra points for that.

This looks less like Speed Racer the movie and more like F-Zero the movie. I'm OK with that and all, but still.

I wonder how long it's going to take Hollywood to run out of viable IPs from our childhood to milk.

We'll know once the US does a live action Pokemon movie.

I don't know. This is just a stone's throw away from that.

At least the DBZ movie is tangentially related to Stephen Chow in some way. This, on the other hand, is directly related to the Wachowski brothers, who turned a legitimately interesting sci-fi universe into Dragon Ball Z.

We all know the Dragon Ball movie will have an emo teenage Goku who his peers just don't understand writing depressing poetry and skateboarding through the sky and fighting against a green James Marsters and his invasion fleet.

Also, in the Speed Racer movie, it looks like Racer X is Japanese and Speed and his family are caucasian. Did they adopt, or was Mrs Racer fooling around with a pool boy?

Wow. These shots look like the belong in some kind of Hot Wheels tie-in video game.

I know it was a cartoon, but I don't remember the show's visuals ever looking like that obnoxious bright and clean.

I completely forgot about the DBZ live action film. I had assumed they axed it.

Well they basically had, it just resurfaced out of nowhere recently with a confirmed director and a few cast members.

God, this totally reminds me of those horrible live-action adoptions of anime that you occasionally get out of Asia. You know the kind I mean... where they try and replicate the speed lines and bright colours and everything and it just turns into one big disaster. The generic techno soundtrack is pretty insufferable, too.

Still, I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt, as far as visuals go anyway. One thing you can generally count on the Wachowskis for is making highly stylized visuals that actually WORK cinematically, as opposed to the completely out of control visual noise of stuff like Transformers or Episode 3.

It looks, to quote GG! circa 2000, like techno puke. And it's gonna bomb harder than a great big bomb.

I'm pretty sure I stole "techno puke" from an old Game Gear ad.

Wasn't there supposed to be a live action Lupin movie at one time?

I actually remember hearing it was going to star John Travolta. So.

I dunno, I'm personally looking forward to it--but then again, I also generally liked the TF movie as well (which, on my website, put me in a distinct MINORITY).

Plus they're actually using a real chimpanzee for Chim-Chim. =D

(Also, that Aisan dude is supposed to be some sort of Korean idol, I think--"Rain" or summat like that. Racer X will still be American.)

I remember reading... somewhere... that one thing that's going to be unusual about the look of this movie is there are going to be absolutely no focus blur whatsoever. Everything in every shot is going to be in perfect focus, regardless of how close or far away it is. After rewatching that trailer, it looks to me like that rumour was true... there's motion blur when things are moving too fast, but otherwise everything is equally crisp no matter what depth it is at.

Presumably it's being done to give the film a 'flat' look similar to that of a cartoon. Sounds kinda bizarre though...

I'm having trouble with the futuristic, semi-dystopian racing scene of the movie. I would think in the future that everyone's cars would have crazy gadgets, making the Mach 5 sort of standard fare.

58 seconds in, the crowd behind Christina Ricci is blurred.

And the train rolls on.

Anyone care to wager on what'll be next? I'd say He-man, but that's already been done so I'll go with ThunderCats or Captain Planet. Maybe Disney will shovel out a CG version of Rescue Rangers.

Let it be a Big Christmas Special... with mafia mice and the like.

I think it's about time to make a full list of old 80's properties that'll undoubtedly get "retro-fitted" in some twisted way or another. Then striking them one by one when its time comes.

Wonder what Hollywood could do with Akira...

I feel like I've watched a different trailer. Every single frame of this is completely awesome.

He wears red socks.
Someone please pause and go frame by frame from 1:28 to 1:29. It's awesome!

This is pure Speed Racer. They are racing in a volcano for crying out loud!

And Racer X is Mattew Fox from Lost and Party of Five. No japanese there.

Oooh, didn't notice that. But on the other hand, in that big crowd shot near the beginning, showing the race audience, all of the hundreds of people are unnaturally in focus. And it CREEPS ME OUT.
