Why... why have I never heard of this game? What's he doing, is he just like... living? Being a kid on his summer vacation? I... I think they made this game for me...

A quick search on the English Wikipedia reveals that a Boku no Natsu Yasumi 3 was released on the PS3, for what it's worth.

From what little I know of this series there are currently 3 Boku no Natsuyasumi games. The first game was released on the PS, the second on the PS2, and the third on the PSP. As Senbei mentioned, the fourth game, Boku no Natsuyasumi 3 is coming out on the PS3 in July. They seem to be little adventure games where you play as a Japanese kid and do summer activities like skipping rope, catching bugs, going swimming, etc.

I'm not sure how popular these games are, but I guess they seem profitable enough for Sony to keep making them.

I know I shouldn't be by now, but I'm aghast that Japanese kids would actually sit indoors on their summer holidays and play a videogame about being a Japanese kid on his summer holiday.

Same thing as, say, playing a baseball or basketball game, instead of just going outside and playing actual baseball or basketball.

At least you can do some interesting dunks and home runs in stadiums with those, here you get to... I don't know, help mom clean the floor?

EDIT: So why simulate that you're in summer holiday, if you can simulate you're working part-time?

Summer Journal Entry 6/13/07

I woke up this morning and couldn't see things clearly. After I left my room I found myself running up against walls over and over as I repeatedly missed doorways and ran into the doorframes instead. My bare feet kicked at the walls like they weren't even there, and I didn't feel a thing. I think there is something wrong with my sensations and maybe my memory too, I don't remember what it's like to even taste food! Whenever I walk into the kitchen for a meal, everything fades to black and all of a sudden my entire family is getting up from having eaten a big meal. Did I eat anything? I don't remember!

Not quite. If you suck at basketball, you can play a basketball videogame. How can you suck at being on holiday so much that you have to simulate it?

Well there is swimming in the game, so what if the kid can't swim or suck at swimming in real life?

I really think the game's demographic is the middle-aged and up crowd that oddly enough plays videogames in Japan and often feels cheated by a missing childhood.

AH! But you see, this game takes place in the summer of 1975, when this game wouldn't even have been technically possible, so there's no way kids of the year 2000 would be able to go outside and literally play in the summer of '75!

It has the aroma of joy and innocence and freedom. It is my current life goal to hunt down these games.

Seems like Animal Crossing with creepily realistic background graphics to me.

I drooped animal crossing after a few months, what is the whole point? At least when you play something like FFF III you fell that you have done something...

Yeah, it's hard for me to get into these kinds of games without a solid beginning and end these days...

I miss P.A.W.S. Personal Automated Wagging System, that was a fun simulation, despite the fact is more than ten years old. I wish I still had the Cd somewhere...

And can you believe that game doesnt have a wikipedia entry? Not even the book "How Dogs Really Work, by Alan Snow" has a wikipedia entry...

I've never heard of either of these things. Maybe you should make those pages.

To be fair, they probably cost next to nothing to make in comparison to say, Gran Turismo, God of War, Lair, etc. Probably doesn't take much for them to break even on a title like this. Looks very low tech, low impact sort of stuff.

It may even be kind of fun, in it's relaxing simplicity. Like Animal Crossing or Harvest Moon.
