I never ever had any trouble with the barrel, but Sonic 3 was the last Genesis Sonic I was able to acquire (I owned 2, then Knuckles, then 1, then 3), and I was probably fifteen at that point, so maybe my deductive reasoning skills were more advanced than, say, a five-year-old trying to figure it out. Then again, it isn't that damn hard.

The biggest problem I ever had with the barrels is, when I'm playing with Sonic & Tails, Tails jumps at the peak of the barrel's swing, totally fucking up my momentum.

Casino Paradise of Sonic Advance 1 has a similar barrel-like object, which is awkwardly controled by timing your jumps to swing it higher and higher. One of those barrels can be used to take an upper-path that takes a boatload of patience to reach.

I swear to God, that specific barrel is an inside-reference to the infamous Carnival Night barrel, which demands a similar amount of grit and stubborness in order to breach. Fortunately in Casino Paradise, you can take an alternative, barrel-free route.

Also, Carnival Night is too goddamned long. I remember finally passing the offending barrel only to Time Out a short while later.
