A few months ago, Sonic fan SamIAm came across the Japanese manuals for Sonic 1 & 2. Unaware of the translations Mary Yamasaki had made, he set about translating the stories and posted his efforts on Sonic Cult. His translations revealed new information that was omitted from Mary’s original texts.

After learning about the existing translations, Sam noticed that there were a number of omissions in the translation of the Sonic 3 story (which derived from the PC version of the game). He then set about re-translating the story (along with the Sonic CD story for completeness), and again, his translations reveal new details.

Those that cannot access Sonic Cult can find copies of his translations at the end of this post.

Summary of the new details

Sonic the Hedgehog
-The Chaos Emeralds are described as a ‘super material’.
-The Emeralds are responsible for the movement of South Island in the sea (which means that the island is no longer moving).
-Although Sonic and Eggman have a history, this is the first time that the animal friends were turned into robots.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2
-The other animals used to tease Tails.
-Unlike the manga adaptation, there is no mention of Sonic making an emergency landing.
-Eggman explicitly states that he needs the Chaos Emeralds for Death Egg.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3
-Only a few days passed between Sonic 2 and Sonic 3 (the original Sega PC translations described the time as 'many days').
-The Master Emerald is described as a 'stone of power' (as opposed to the Might Stone description in the PC translation.
-The Death Egg created a fissure that revealed the location of the Master Emerald (and presumably Hidden Palace, which may explain how Eggman was able to enter and exit the zone during the Sonic & Knuckles cut scene).

Sonic 1
---------

The evil mad scientist Dr. Eggman is up to his old nasty tricks again.
"Sonic...that annoying, impertinent hedgehog. Thanks to him, my great plans are always laid to waste! Oh, but this time, I'm going to rub him out with the power of science! Ha ha ha ha ha..."

[next page]

South Island is a treasure trove of gems and ancient ruins. They say that it's the island where the mystical Chaos Emeralds lie. The Chaos Emeralds are a super-material that give energy to all living beings. Also, when applied to scientific purposes, they can be used for nuclear and laser based weaponry. However, nobody knows exactly how to get ahold of these emeralds. At the same time, though, they do say that the reason why South Island is always moving is because the emeralds are somewhere inside the island's hazy depths.

One day, crisis visited upon the island. And who showed up with it but Dr. Eggman and his cronies.
"I'll find those emeralds even if I have to dig up the entire island to do it!"

Dr. Eggman set up a fort in one corner of the island, and went about carrying out his plan.

"Eggman, you still haven't had enough?"
Sonic hurried as soon as he heard the news. Dr. Eggman never seemed to leave him alone, even though Sonic had beaten him every time so far. It sounded like Dr. Eggman considered Sonic his sworn enemy, but he was never any match for Sonic.

However, this time something is amiss.

"Have you seen it, Sonic? This time is going to be different! Because this time, I've turned all the animals on the island into robots!"

"E, Everybody!?"

"All of them go about in accordance to my orders. In other words, Sonic, everyone on the island is your enemy! Gya-- Ha ha ha ha ha ha ^cough^ ^ack^ ^ahem^. This time, the world really will be all mine!"

This is terrible! Hurry! Sonic the Hedgehog - everyone is waiting for your help!

Sonic 2
---------

Along the way of one of his impulsive adventures, Sonic suddenly discovred the island.
It was a small island, with pleasant green fields of grass spread throughout it.
"All right, it's time to take a little break." he said.

Drawing an arc of white exhaust, Sonic slid his favorite plane, the Tornado, down toward the island's silhouette...and almost as if it were following him, a shiny little figure came down and suspiciously disappeared on the other side of the island.

[The Legend of West Side Island]
They say that a very long time ago, the people of this island used mysterious stones to advance their civilization, and they achieved great prosperity. However, when those people people tried to use the stones in the wrong way, their prosperity vanished overnight. After that, they say that the gods sealed the stones away somewhere on the island.

One day, not long after Sonic had been on the island, Sonic noticed something tagging along to his rear. He turned around to see a little fox. When the fox realized he had been seen, he scurried into the shadows under the palm trees. But when Sonic turned and ran off, the fox followed behind him as fast as he could.

After a while, Sonic said "Well, he can do whatever he wants." and left it at that, not taking particular interest in whatever it was the fox was doing.

"Miles Prower" was the fox's name. Miles actually had two tails, which is why the animals on the island all called him "Tails". They teased him a lot because of those two tails. But when he saw Sonic come to the island, he changed.

"I want to be cool, too!" he resolved. After that, he started tagging along behind Sonic for all hours of the day.

Then came that one early afternoon. Miles found a beautiful aeroplane down at the beach. Miles loved all sorts of machines and vehicles, and he practically tripped over himself running towards the plane.
That slim fuselage, and those wings that could cut like a knife! Fascinated by this beautiful craft, Miles ran around to see the other side, and there he stopped dead in his tracks. Sonic was taking a nap under the wing. Miles turned right around and went back to the other side of the plane, and then it happened...
A flash shown off in the woods.
Then came an enourmous explosion, and up rose a pillar of fire after it. Shards of rock and pieces of tree came showering down from the sky. Miles, who had narowly escaped being blown away by crawling under the plane, opened his eyes. Reflected in them was the the red of the burning forest, and robots digging at the ground as though they were looking for something. Miles couldn't figure out what was happening.
The explosions continued ceaselessly, and the island was blanketed in flames. Miles was at a loss as he looked on, but then he felt the presence of someone standing next to him. He looked over, and there was Sonic glaring at the burnt up forest.
"Eggman, you bastard!" mumbled Sonic as he kicked up some sand and ran off into the forest.
Something had started, something truly incredible. This was the hunch Miles had as he reflexively took off in the same direction as Sonic.
"Uwa--Ha Ha Ha Ha!!"
From the forest echoed that all too familiar vulgar laugh. It's him - the one and only Dr. Eggman.

"I've found it at last! The place where the Chaos Emeralds sleep! Folowing Sonic worked out perfectly! Now I should be able to finish my ultimate weapon: The Death Egg! I"ll be waiting for you, Sonic! This time, my friend, this time I will beat you, and all the Emeralds will be mine! Then I shall be the conqueror of the entire world! Gya-- Ha Ha Ha Ha!"

The stage is set. Now it's time for you to bring the curtain to a close on this adventure once and for all!

Sonic 3
---------

As we speak, Dr. Eggman's fortress "The Death Egg", which had been totally destroyed by Sonic, is on a collision course with the Earth. And it just so happens that right in the Death Egg's line of descent floats a single giant mass of clouds. Quietly hidden in those clouds is a shadow...

A rise of mountains, a spread of forests. That shadow is an island. It's the great "Floating Island" that drifts through the sky. Like a falling star, the Death Egg crashed smack into the Floating Island. Mountains crumbled and trees toppled. The incredible impact tilted the whole island, and gradually forced it to drop in elevation. Finally, it plunged into the ocean. The Floating Island sent out what looked like a tidal wave, but it didn't sink in the water. Cradling the Death Egg, the island went on floating in the sea as though nothing had happened.

A few days later...

On an island far away from where the Death Egg and the Floating Island crashed down, a two-tailed fox named Tails suddenly detected a strong Chaos Emerald reaction on the Jewel Radar he had invented.

"I wonder if this has anything to do with that huge tidal wave we just had..."

With that on his mind, Tails turned toward the beach where Sonic was. Sonic, who had been taking a nap, found a small ring washed up on the shore around that same moment. The ring had what appeared to be ancient letters carved into it. As he held this ring, Sonic remembered an old legend he had heard about an island. A long time ago, when this island had still been a part of the continent, people of a great civilization lived there. This civilization had created a society of peace and abundance with the energy of the "Stone of Power". However, one day a sect of wise men attempting to take the energy of the "Stone of Power" for themselves accidentally let the energy run out of control. The civilization collapsed in an instant, and it disappeared from history altogether. After the incident, the gods, descending from the sky, rebuilt the civilization's land as an island and released the "Stone of Power" into the sky...or so they say.

The ring and this legend...If only for the sake of nostalgia, Sonic decided to set off an another journey right then and there.

Dr. Eggman, who had escaped from his fallen Death Egg, noticed that there is a Chaos Emerald on the Floating Island. From a fissure that the Death Egg had opened up in the ground, he could pick up the reactions of a huge Chaos Emerald. If he uses that energy, it may be possible for him to launch his Death Egg into outer space once more. To get hold of the Emerald, Dr. Eggman started building a base on the Floating Island. He also kidnapped animals and remodeled them into robots, and made the nature of Floating Island more severe with his environment-changing machines.

"Dahhh-ha-ha-ha! Sonic, even if you come to this island, you'll be too late! This time, both the world and the Chaos Emeralds will be mine!"

The stage is set once again. From here, Sonic the Hedgehog begins his new adventure.

[skip to character intro section on page 34]

Knuckles The Echidna

The Guardian of Floating Island

1. Guardian who protects the Chaos Emeralds of Floating Island
2. An Echidna of the marsupial family. Nickname is Knuckle.
3. Fast running, quick tempered type.
4. Mentally slow and trusting; easily fooled.
5. Doesn't necessarily dislike girls, but isn't good with them.
6. Can dig holes and climb walls with his speciality-gloves.
7. His hobby is digging holes. He is a mole, after all.
8. Good at finding hidden routes.
9. Can fly just a little bit.
10. Likes fruit; hates sunlight.

On that day, he was looking around the island's altars, just like he always does. It was his mission to look after the 7 Chaos Emeralds that control the power of the "Pillar" that sleeps in the depths of the island.

His name is Knuckles the Echidna. He's a spiny anteater who his friends on the island call "Knuckle". To Knuckle, who was born and raised on the island, its nature and its animals are all his friends. And the thing which protects his friends is the crystal pillar [called the "Pillar"].

It happened rather suddenly. Knuckle thought he would go check on one of the Chaos Emeralds to see if there wasn't something wrong with it. He could hardly believe it as the Chaos Emerald lit up with a sparkle before his very eyes and began to vibrate strangely. Knuckle was bewildered by this phenomenon, the likes of which had never happened before. In the blink of an eye, the vibrations grew suddenly intense. As these vibrations peaked, there was another flash of light and loud ring. Knuckle could remember feeling as though his body was gently floating, and there his memory stopped.

When he regained consciousness, Knuckle found his body thrown outside of the altar. What Knuckle saw as he slowly picked himself up and looked around was the half-destroyed ruins of the altar. Knuckle jumped back inside it in confusion. However, the Chaos Emerald that should have been in there had disappeared, without leaving a single fragment behind.

Knuckle wandered outside the alter in a daze. Then, with no energy left, he looked out over a distance...and noticed the appearance of something mysterious next to a lake. Looking at this huge, round, egg-like object, he felt himself jump.

"Does that huge egg belong to the legendary dragon..?"

There was no doubt that this egg was the one that appeared in the writings on the altars of the Chaos Emeralds, the one that was to bring catastrophe to the island.

Over the next few days, Knuckle went around to all 7 of the Chaos Emerald altars on the island, but every last Emerald had disappeared without a trace. Then, refusing to give up in spite of all this, Knuckle was investigating all over the island when he came across a man he was unfamiliar with.
This man, who called himself Dr. Eggman, knew that Knuckle was the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, and told him this:

"I happen to be a scientist who has come here to study that egg. Hmm, and if you're the guardian of the Chaos Emeralds, I suppose I must tell you this. The truth is, there's this bad hedgehog called Sonic who is getting in the way of my research, and it looks like he's come to the island with his eyes on those Chaos Emeralds.

"He's going for the Chaos Emeralds...?"

Knuckle was very easily tricked by Dr. Eggman's skillful lie. And this is how the rivalry between Sonic and Knuckle began.

Sonic CD - (no surprises)
-----------------------------

It's a small, beautiful place [planet] called Little Planet. For one month out of the year, it appears over the enormous Never Lake.

It's said to be a planet of wonder, and it's the sleeping place of the mysterious "Time Stones", which let one freely rule time.

In incidents caused by the Time Stones, deserts were turned into jungles, polluted lakes were made beautiful...and other things that were all done by crossing through time.

And the one whose attention this caught was the evil genius scientist Doctor Eggman.

"The place where the Time Stones sleep, the Little Planet, is perfect for my fortification!"

said Doctor Eggman as he fixed the island above the lake and began building his fortress. He began to take the actions to get ahold of the Time Stones, control time freely, and achieve his ambitions of world conquest.

On the other hand, Sonic, who didn't know what was happening, was going to Never Lake to see the Little Planet.

"What? Sonic is here? How convenient."

Hearing the news, Doctor Eggman floated a daring smile while his eyes shimmered.

What Sonic saw as he came running was the Little Planet, fixed to a boulder by a chain and miserable in appearance. Also, looking closely at the surface of the boulder, he saw the face of Doctor Eggman.

"Eggman, huh?"

"This time, with my powers of science I will have you crushed! And with the Time Stones, I'll conquer the world!

Brandishing an ominous smile, Doctor Eggman hid in a blue flash.

Sonic is here to crush the ambition of Doctor Eggman like it's nothing, but can he free the Little Planet that stands before him?

"No problem! With a little courage, you can do anything!"

Sweet. Any plans of putting all of this stuff on a web page again Smile?

It's been a while since I've read these and for the first time this part of the Sonic 2 introduction stood out:
[The Legend of West Side Island]
They say that a very long time ago, the people of this island used mysterious stones to advance their civilization, and they achieved great prosperity. However, when those people people tried to use the stones in the wrong way, their prosperity vanished overnight. After that, they say that the gods sealed the stones away somewhere on the island.
This is essentially repeated in Sonic 3 and then expanded upon in Sonic Adventure. Seeing as Sonic 3 continues directly from Sonic 2 it seems likely that there would be some intentional connection between the emerald backstories. Could West Side Island have been part of the main continent and drifted off into the ocean once Angel Island was lifted into the sky?

Yes, that could also explain the plot of Tails Adventure. But with all the changes Sega had, who knows what the official story will end being if they decided to do it someday.

They still have transcriptions of all the manual stories up to Sonic Advance 3 at Sonic Dimension. They're all pulled word-for-word from the actual manuals as far as I can tell except for Sky Patrol.

Lately I've been attempting my own transliterations with mixed results. The finer points of the Chaotix prologue are particularly hazy.

Hello everyone, I'm the SamIAm who did these translations. Thank you for taking the time to read them and leave comments. I have always enjoyed the content found here at this site like the way this community presents itself. Although for originality's sake I was careful not to look at the work others here had done while doing my own, I respect this place for doing what it does well. G. Silver in particular, I feel after reading some of his work, really seems to know what he is doing when dealing with Japanese texts.

I would like to say that I hope you do not read these translations and take their awkwardness in fluency to mean that I don't really know what I am doing. While I won't profess to be completely fluent in Japanese, I do want to tell you all that I had almost no trouble comprehending the original texts. As I said at Sonic-Cult, I left the sentences as grammatically intact as possible on the assumption that people would have more interest in knowing what exactly the Japanese manuals say than they would in reading my re-interpretations of them (this site's re-interpretations, by the way, are very good). This method, however, makes for some strange sentence structure and flow. If you ever archive these translations, which I welcome the site or big_smile to do, I would only ask that a message similar to this one be included somewhere along the line with the texts themselves.

It just so happens that I also took a stab at the Chaotix intro this morning. I only had what I could find at http://www.tastescity.com/sonicdimensio ... aotix.html to work with, and I suspect that there is more interesting information to be found throughout the manual. However, this still gives us some things to think about, and again, I welcome your comments. Also, if any of you who have worked on translating this intro yourselves have comments about my interpretation, I would be very interested in hearing them. With more strange terminology than the others, this one was a little more difficult to deal with.

Knuckles' Chaotix
---------------------

Somewhere out there lies the Floating Island. A few months have passed since the events that have caused the island to be skimming on the ocean's surface. However, it is in the seas to the south where, in the ocean's deepest depths, a great upheaval occurred, and suddenly the shape of a single island appeared. It was the result of a great increase in the activity of the earths crust, which was caused by the power of the Floating Island's Master Emerald "Pillar". Not stopping there, in just a very short while, it changed its appearance [with tremendous speed].

The Energy of the Pillar had changed the island that was a mere clump of boulders into a paradise of green.

"Is there something over there...?"

The guardian of the Master Emerald Pillar, Knuckle, had his questions about the sudden change in the island that was continuing without interruption. The remains of the legendary civilization that had, in ancient times, disappeared in the blink of an eye because of the wildly running "Stone of Power", may be sleeping on that island. "Something is definitely making the power of the Pillar amplify." Thought Knuckle as he headed toward the island alone, taking to heart his responsibility as guardian.

However, he wasn't the only one thinking this. That genius scientist of ill-repute, Dr. Eggman, was another, and he had already gotten on the island to investigate. There, he discovered a ring with ancient letters carved on it. He understood then that this island was truly the part of the ancient civilization that had been lost. Furthermore, he found a ring that was a spitting image of one of the Super-Rings that were on the Floating Island. This was an ancient Special Rings that had been used before the legendary civilization had been lost.

"With this, I'll find my way right back to the Master Emerald!"

Dr. Eggman was pleased with his discovery, but the "Stone of Power" that the Special Rings should have led him to had already been transferred [to somewhere else] in the Floating Island by the descending gods. However, the energy of the "Pillar" permeated in the mysterious space the Special Ring produced, and it crystallized into the Chaos Rings.

"If I search out the secret of the Special Ring, I'll not only get the secret of the rings that Sonic and his friends carry, but I'll also be able summon the Master Emerald!"

With this on his mind, Dr. Eggman hurried to establish a fort on the island. On the grounds of this resort, which had been named "Neutrogic High Zone", Dr. Eggman's evil plan surged. When Knuckle arrived nearby the island, it was already too late. Eggman was successful at crystallizing energy. He christened his synthesized rings "Dark Rings". And furthermore, he was developing a "Ring Power" that forced the existence of a space-time connection between rings.

"If I've got these, they won't be able to lift a finger against me. This should be over with little trouble. This time, the whole world will be mine!"

Dr. Eggman's treacherous plans are steadily being realized.

No he doesn't. He never even translates anything unless we threaten him with anal rape by Delphine.

Anyway, thanks for the Chaotix translation. I stumbled painfully through the original text a while back with the aid of Jim Breen and it looks like I got it fairly close to the mark, which makes me feel good about myself despite a lack of justifiable reason.

While we're on this train of thought, I remember a while back somebody posted a translation of some Sonic Adventure backstory (much more than is given in the manual) that allegedly came from the strategy guide. Does anybody still have that or, better yet, the actual pages from the guide itself?

That's pretty much what I was going for with mine as well. I always felt slightly embarrassed to have people reading it when the wording was so strange, so I'm glad you liked them.

So, if I'm reading this right, Eggman realized the Special Rings sent you right to the Hidden Palace, but upon trying to use one, he found Knux had moved the Master Emerald?

If that's the case, it'd explain why the ME's location was completely different in Adventure - assuming I'm reading this right.

This new Chaotix translation makes things a bit clearer, but what on earth are the two Special Rings that Eggman found? I assume one is the large ring he uses to transform Metal Sonic at the end of the game, but what of the other?

An explanation for the Master Emerald no longer being in the Hidden Palace come Sonic Adventure, perhaps?

That I did. I felt kind of lame writing that 2nd paragraph, like I was whining to everyone "I'm not incompetent!". The thing is, when I write something like those translations and post it, I feel like a total hack. As opposed to, say, a 50% hack like I really am ;)

So I know how it goes. Keep up the good work, in the few things I've read of yours, the meaning seemed to be right on the money. Not to sound elitist, but that's a rare thing in this scene, let me tell you...

Yikes, my bad. Looking over that section again, I realized that I misinterpreted an expression. In the original, it says スーパーリングと瓜2つのもの which means, very literally, "like 2 melons with (the super rings)". Essentially, that means "just the same as" or "identical in comparison to something as two melons are to one another". But I misread it as meaning there were 2 Special Rings. Whoops.

I'll edit my translation if you all don't mind.

Perhaps it's the large grey ring that's used to power most of his vehicles throughout the game?

I'm putting together an archive of translations (and Sonic Team interviews). It should be finished either by today or tomorrow. It includes all four Sonic Adventure back stories.
and I suspect that there is more interesting information to be found throughout the manual.
A scan of the manual was posted here awhile back, but I don't think its still online. I can email you a copy, if you want (Unfortunately, I don't have the webspace to make a manual scan archive).
