How many people here have played FFV? I started it last week, and am thouroughly addicted. It's definitely the best pre-VII Final Fantasy, with gorgeous 16-bit graphics, a great soundtrack, facial expressions, pirates, etc...basically, if you haven't already played it, give it a whirl before posting.

I've already played through it. Personally, I liked IV better than it, but I liked V better than VII or VI.

My main gripe with IV is that the designers felt the best way to advance the plot was to kill every other character. Otherwise, it was okay.

In terms of gameplay, I will unashamedly state that it is the very best game of the Final Fantasy series. Unfortunately, in terms of story, it's pretty awful. If not for crap-fests like Mystic Quest and FFX-2, I'd say it has the worst story of the series.

FFVI remains my favourite of the lot.

Was FFV the first to introduce the Jobs feature? If so, it gets major props.

I think III for the NES was.

V is certainly lacking a good plot, but it's just so fun...

Eh. How is it different from your typical FF gameplay?

I played the official release version... now I hate pirate talk.

Get a fan translation, seriously.

A perfected job system.

That's basically it, but if you like the job system it should count for a lot. The rendition used in FFX-2 was terrible. If you can't mix jobs as you please, then you're pretty much just playing an ordinary FF game but with 20-50 characters to choose from. And if you want that, then the 14 characters offered by FFVI will do just fine.

Did you ever play Alundra?

The only thing FFV had going for it was the Job system and a few choice songs such as "Battle on the Big Bridge" a.k.a. Gilgamesh's theme. Other than that, FFIV and FFVI trumps it in every thing else(well, maybe not the graphics in FFIV). FFVI is still my favorite FF though FFXII could change things.

Man, did you play the demo of FFXII? It goes without saying that it's ugly (like, PlayStation 1 ugly, those textures may as well have been coughed up by my cat) and sports a cast so outstandingly vapid that the sheer soullessness is rivaled only by previous iterations of the same series - but now they've even screwed up the combat. It's basically FFXI without the online dynamic. That is to say, slow, clunky, confusing, frustrating, and altogether monotonous. I've had more fun playing tic-tac-toe in the dirt, due in large part to the fact that that game requires a far greater deal of strategy, and the dirt is just slightly more aesthetically pleasing than FFXII.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was a professional in action.

FFI was the first one with a job system.

But aren't demos unfinished products? As in the flaws you see now could be changed somewhere along the road. I mean, isn't that demo along like nearly 2 years old?

III was the first where you could actually change jobs to any interesting degree, though.

Which is probably what Senbei meant...at least, that's what I meant.

Fuck FFXII's demo. It was disappointing in every possible way.

...which, by the way, makes it at least 40% better than Dragon Quest VIII. I shall now pass judgement:

FFXII Demo: You wastin' my time, yo out of HOT DAMN, YO!
DQ8: Them titties do not make up fo yo stank ass game out of HOT DAMN, YO!

Square should just quit the RPG business, in my personal opinion.

Final Fantasy XII looked good in stills, so does that mean Square played the "show them pretty CG videos to compensate for the actual ugly-ass graphics" game like they've done with every Final Fantasy since 6?

Absolutely. The worst part is the battle system, though.

Plastic, incase you've forgotten, here's the first rule of the forum:
Proper grammar is a requirement.
We're not English majors (well, most of us aren't), so you won't be chastised for misspelling and occasional grammatical errors. But you should make an honest attempt at writing coherent sentences with proper capitalization and at least basic punctuation. Sentences that lack structure are an eyesore and difficult to read. Such posts will be deleted even if your topic is relevant, because there isn't anyone here who will have the patience to interpret your bastardization of the language.
I must ask that you return to the realm of modern English, otherwise I will start deleting your posts.
...which, by the way, makes it at least 40% better than Dragon Quest VIII.
You know, if you run your dick through a pencil sharpener a couple of times, it might make it look bigger. DQVIII is awesome, you pussywillow. I wouldn't recommend it to everyone - it is basically a (very, very good) 1991 RPG in 3D - but it isn't convoluted and utterly dysfunctional like every other Square RPG since someone decided that teenage fucking girls should be allowed to play RPG's.

Plus, Trode says funny stuff like "pootling".

You have a point, but when you're correcting someone else's grammar, you should watch your own. Plus, PWB is the only exception to that rule.

My main beef with the newer Final Fantasy games is that the replay value is getting worse for each installment. Played the old ones a dozen times, but with an intro sequence that lasts over two hours, I just can't be buggered to replay FFX anytime ever. Sure, the sequel has exceptional replay value since it's basically a game made entirely up of sidequests, but since it's such a very very shitty game, I barely had the stomach to play it once.

If FFXII is going to be another game where you spend more time waiting for cutscenes to end than actually dealing with something that seems remotely like an actual game, then I can't be bothered.

I look forward to that day in a distant future when my great-grandchild will find a Square RPG where you can actually skip cutscenes and not recieve any kind of percentage penalty or whatever for doing it. I don't expect such a thing to come to pass in my lifetime.

No, he really isn't.
