Sonic Revolution?

Sources close to SEGA have told IGN Revolution that the developer is working on a new entry into the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise for Nintendo's next generation console. The title, purportedly developed by a "top-tier" SEGA team led by Yuji Naka, will not be a port of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game tentatively dubbed "Sonic the Hedgehog [next gen]." Instead, say insiders, it is an entirely original effort designed from the ground up to take advantage of Revolution's unique controller. No further details are available at this time.

While it's easy to shrug this news off as a no-brainer, it is nevertheless an important development because it suggests that powerhouse publishers are thinking about ways to make innovative games on Nintendo's upcoming platform rather than just porting over dumbed down versions of their Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 projects. Furthermore, one source we spoke with alleged that they have known about a Revolution Sonic the Hedgehog game for at least two months, which indicates that it isn't a freshly hatched concept. We're keeping our fingers crossed that something might show at E3 2006, which explodes this May in Los Angeles.

More than a decade ago, SEGA and Nintendo were big rivals, but in recent times the companies have enjoyed a fruitful partnership. Sonic Team chose to make GameCube the official home of its hedgehog mascot, releasing ports of its hit Dreamcast titles as well as wholly original Sonic efforts for the system. Meanwhile, Nintendo contracted SEGA developers like Amusement Vision to co-create GCN efforts such as F-Zero GX. The Big N's own Shigeru Miyamoto even entertained the idea of a mascot cross-over, in which Sonic could partner or square off against stars including Mario or Luigi. It is, therefore, not surprising that SEGA would continue to throw extra support Nintendo's way.

When contacted, SEGA would not confirm that such a project is underway.

"SEGA has not announced its official plans to support Revolution," a spokesperson for the company told us. "We are committed to creating great game content for all viable platforms, so when Revolution rolls out, it would be a safe bet to assume that we will be there."

IGN Revolution reminds readers that this information could not yet be substantiated and therefore should not be taken as an official confirmation.

We'll update with more on the story as information becomes available.
Pretty much just a rumor at the moment.

I'm more concerned that E3 2006 is going to explode...

This isn't the only time I've heard of this. Several days ago on another forum, a journalist had mentioned that he was very confident Sonic would be on Revolution in one form or another, but that it might not be the same title as on the other systems. He'd also heard apparently Sonic Team have been conducting tests (similar to the Sonic DS tech demo I guess), where you use the analogue nunchuk for movement and the controller's motions are used for increasing and decreasing speed.

Then again, I suppose this is rumour too, but the source on that forum is apparently incredibly trustworthy. IGN don't tend to put things up unless there's a large likelyhood of truth either.

A Sonic game based on a gimmick?! Gasp!

This is the best news I've heard all day, but I still have my doubts. Sonic is, unquestionably, best experienced on a regular controller (or, in a pinch, a keyboard). I still support the Revolution's new controller, but I don't think it's particularly advantageous in Sonic.

It's Shadow the Hedgehog 2! Now a FPS thanks to the wonders of the Revmote!

My thoughts exactly.

Also, I think it's hilarious how all the Nintendo fanboys get so excited about "news" like this when we still haven't even seen a single screenshot of any game actually running on Revolution hardware yet.

Wait, so now we're going to have to buy at least two nextgen consoles just to keep up with the series?

Well, fuckbeans.

Eh, let them have their hope. The blow shall be more crushing when it turns out to be for X-Box 360.

That was my thinking.

Let's just pray the PS3/XBOX360 title gets ported to the revolution.

Sometimes, no most of the time, SEGA really piss me off.

So if the game features the ability to beat the crud out of the dark lord naka and Ilzuka with the rev controller being your fists; would you buy it? Since you whine about this already.

Nowadays, SegaSonic is the only one who cares about them.

I'd gladly beat the crap out of Naka, what with him being an egotistical prick and such.

*sighs*

Only on the GHZ could I say that, I’m starting to see why you cynical bastards love this place.

Nobody cares. Nintendo haven't been relevant since the SNES.

Just so long as the X360/PS3 version is brilliant, I'll be happy.

What? Did you even read? This is about a completely separate next gen Sonic title, not the one we've seen, which is coming to the 360 and PS3. This is about the possibility of one that could ONLY be done on Revolution, which, if it is being made, is likely being made because the Revolution can't handle the other title (apparently in power it only compares to a "souped up Xbox").

About the screenshot comment, Nintendo's entire approach to the next gen so far has been to get people to completely and utterly focus on their controller with no distractions. They know fine well their system doesn't have the power to compete with the other two and they had no intention of trying to, it's all about selling the controller to them just now, as much as they can, they're trying to get people not to care how their games will look, but how they'll play....and admittedly I don't think it's going to work because I certainly still want to see what they can do with their next games visually, but I can see where they're coming from.

One thing though, I definitely don't think anyone should be hugely underestimating Nintendo in the next gen. I don't expect them to win, but I expect things to get pretty damn interesting.

That's exactly why I'm not excited. All that's been said is that there's going to be a Sonic game for the Revolution. And if you ever, at any point in time, didn't expect this to happen, you need to stare long and hard at the deviant porn-off between Baba and Ritz in hopes that burning your eyes out will divert some bloodflow to your brain.

I actually only meant to quote that Baba person, I really don't care about what you said. I'll edit my post to make it clearer who I was AIMING AT.

You people whine about the revolution title because it will most likely not cost you your soul to own; like the Xbox360 systems and game you are lauding. If I was filthy rich I would buy A 360 and the sonic game but I am not going to piss away 400-500 dollars on game system that may be obsolete in another five years.

I think it has to do with reports of various 3rd party companies taking an interest with the system so they won't have to fear the lack of 3rd party support for the console. *shrugs*

Except when it came towards the handhelds. =P

And I find it hillarious when Sony fans get excited about "news" like screenshots and raw system specs. I'm going to make a broad generalization now. Anyone who believes that Sony has provided us with more "substantial" information than Nintendo about their upcoming console and games is a massive graphics slut, because the only additional thing Sony has shown us is that their games will be pretty.

I just can't bring myself to give a fuck about that stuff anymore. It's not like any of my favourite games this generation were technical powerhouses. I don't really care that I can't see individual sweat beads rendered on Yorda's forehead. I'm not getting a boner because I can count the beard hairs on Snake's chin now. The prospect of jacking cars that are more realistically rendered than ever before just doesn't do anything for me. That's why I can't get any more excited about the PS3 or the XBOX360 than I could about any other box that plays video games.

Forgive me if I'm bucking the trend here, but I don't see how "Sonic title with new, unknown control system" is any less exciting announcement than "Another Sonic Adventure rehash, but prettier." It certainly isn't enough so that I'm compelled to point fingers and laugh at anyone.

Yeah, cause Mario 64, Metroid Prime and Zelda haven't contributed anything to modern game design.

That's sarcasm, by the way.

Anyway, I can't really think of any practical application that the Revolution controller would serve in Sonic, but whatever, the game is being made by Sonic Team, which means it'll suck whether they find a good use for the controller or not. I'm also not sure why everyone is so optimistic about the 360/PS3 Sonic game, since that has a good chance of sucking as well.

Err... But then again, everyone though Sonic on the DS was a bad idea, and that didn't turn out too badly. But then again, that wasn't developed by Sonic Team.

Metroid Prime was a FPS with more jumping, and managed to be shit ass boring. Zelda really didn't do anything that Mario 64 didn't.

Zelda oot introduced the lock-on targeting which was has become a standard feature in third-person games.
