Sonic 2 (the "long" version)

Post by Starscream »

So, I reckon this is old news for many of you, but who has played *this* hack of Sonic 2 yet? It includes all the regular levels plus Wood Zone, Dust Hill Zone, Genocide City Zone and Hidden Palace. There's also an expanded Death Egg which I haven't played yet.

For the most part it's kinda fun, but it remains something of a curiosity for me. Not much else to see. It *could* actually make a great game but there's a lot of work to be done on scenery/badniks/map layout,... Of the new zones Wood Zone and Hidden Palace are probably the best looking. They used the music from the versus mode on it, and the "missing" Hidden Palace tune for Hidden Palace of course.

Some tricky parts in Dust Hill Zone. I thought it was oddly reminiscent of Sonic 1.

Thoughts?

I played it. It sucked.

Now, Sonic2Z was a good hack.

Played it.

I like how the completed the Hidden Palace zone from the beta rom and the Dust Hill zone is passable, but all the rest is crap, IMHO.

Genocide City really needs to be redone. Instead of using stuff from some Batman game or whatever, why not use the stuff from the city levels in Socket. At least they have something called inclines.

Hmm. Just played a bit of this one. Not as "impossible" or hard as some people make it out to be but challenging nonetheless. I understand that basically, what these hackers do is move the basic lay-out of the level around and edit the colour-scheme?

As for the Sonic 2 (long version) hack, I think it has a lot of potential. As it stands it leaves a lot to be desired but if he can improve the new levels as much as he claims in the last post on his site it could turn out great. It'd be fun actually if a serious team of developers tried to extend the game.
