From Nack to Fang..

I was playing Sonic Gems Collection, and noticed that the only time on the whole disc I saw the name "Nack" was in the Sonic Triple Troulbe instruction manual. In the English manuals of Sonic Drift 2 and Tails Adventures Fang's original name is kept, as it is in Sonic the Fighters and in the picture descriptions in the gallery (as is the name "Chaotix", interestingly enough. No "Knuckles" in front of it).

Did Sega not like the name Nack or something? This is a pretty damn random question even for the GHZ forums, but one that leaves me bewildered (they also keep Eggman's name intact in the Sonic Drift 2 English manual, also hurting my head).

Sega of America created the name Nack (In Japan, the character was only called Fang).

With the Mega Drive games, the character names only appeared in the manuals and so were easy to change. The later Game Gear titles, such as Sonic Drift 2, featured the names within the actual games. Presumably, SoA didn't feel it was worth the effort to re-program the titles solely to include the American names.

Yeah, I'd chalk Sonic Drift 2 up to lazy localization. Something similar happened in Yoshi's Safari: the Princess was called Peach years before Nintendo started officially using that name outside of Japan.

I've always wondered about Fang's species. SoA said he was a Weasel, while the fan world says he's a wolfen weasel, and there's no info of it in any Japanese texts, yet I recall a Japanese fan site that has an avatar of him howling like a wolf. So... ._. I'll view him as a wolf.

Let's just say his dad is a weasel and his mom is a wolf.
Shit, bad mental image installed.

What if we call him Nack Fang? is not a bad idea since in Japan they usual call people by their last names.

*Nova is run over by a truck and then insulted for his really bad grammar

I never really had a problem with the name Nack, most likely because of Jim Doe's fanfics. He used to hang out here, didn't he?

i do recall seeing a picture taken from an Archie comic (i think). it basically showed Nack talking with his sister, Nicole. but of course, she's refered to as Nic, leading to the old phrase "Nick Nacks".

the liberties Archie has taken aside, i don't know any particular reason for the name change, other than "Oh, Fang sounds to harsh!". apparently, American children cannot be exposed to anything, or else their heads will explode, which seems to be the logic when companies bring over anything foreign (like anime). that still doesn't answer the question, but i felt like saying it XP

Members of a group of English Protestants who in the 16th and 17th centuries advocated strict religious discipline along with simplification of the ceremonies and creeds of the Church of England?

I think it's more likely they just believed Fang to be too generic and common a name for evil fuzzy things.

Man, his sister is what Fang/Nack would look like if he had a sex change/in-drags.

You could say that about any simplistic anthropomorphic character, though.
