Do Green Gibbons and Michael Stearns still post here?

Post by Saturnman »

If so, I'd like to have a talk with them, especially if they are the same people (very likely) who hung around the various Sega forums in the late nineties. I was Saturnman back then (and still known by that username in some forums, though there are many people with the same name nowadays).

GG is a passing acquaintance, but I used to talk to Michael Stearns more and I remember him being a wicked artist. My guess is that he got even better at it. I'd certainly be interested to see what he has done since then.

I stumbled upon this site by accident and I am surprised to see some familiar names.

P.S. I screwed up trying to register here at first, I clicked on the below 13 years option and got that weird Email asking for my parents permission to post here.

Well, well, after a little search, looks like they both do. Even found Michael Stearns' art gallery. His style has changed a lot, it's warmer and less cartoony than it used to be. I especially like the Sonic 1 pics. I suspect he uses Painter rather than Paint Shop and Photoshop for many of those.

And I see his love for Virtual On has not subsided.

There is something decidedly creepy about being refered to by your full real name on the internet, especially in the same sentence as Green Gibbon!, a name we are taught to fear and respect and not compare ourselves to lest we incurr horrible wrath of some kind.

But hey! I don't remember why or how, but I ran into your name completely randomly not that long ago. I think it was some picture or some comic book thing (not one you put in the art thread here) that got my attention, or some indication that you were awesome in some way, but I can't remember what. Mostly I just remember your reviews on Seganet (?) and Dave's Saturn page. I'm afraid I've forgotton specifically why I know you though? (you weren't one of those Megacosm guys, were you?) What are you doing now?

My love for Virtual On has gone into hibernation, but it is still around. I try not to think of it very often anymore, what with that recent MARZ fiasco. I use a mix of Painter and OpenCanvas but I still get a lot of practical use out of PSP as well. Also, don't forget to check this out (it's still under development...)

It's kind of GG!'s site, so I'd say he still posts here. Or, well, he did. We haven't heard from him in awhile.

Oh? Did you see those comic book thingies in a gallery or art site or just in another forum? Comic books are not my thing so I rarely draw them. There can only be a few instances where you could have seen those.

Actually, I am not sure where we interacted. I just knew I talked to a Michael Stearns many years ago and that I had to check some old picture archives of mine featuring art by Mr Stearns (a Virtual On comic strip from 1998, to be more precise). And yes, I was part of Megacosm, a project that never got off the ground really. That could be where we met.

He he, that's pretty cool. At first, despite warnings in the other thread, I couldn't figure out why I couldn't move the puppy around. Took me 30 seconds to realize that this is really an one-button game getting the puppy to move where you want it to is a challenge in itself. The art reminds me of something 16-bit, a cross between a Genny and TG-16 game.

Do you do the programming too or just the art? I've been involved in 3 or 4 gaming projects, always as an artist and always at a distance, it did present some challenges.

I really don't remember what it was, but now that I think about it I definitly remember some of your older game-related parody comics. Didn't you do a VO one where one of the characters' Saturn backpack got swapped for a PSX?

But if it's Megacosm then there you go! You had hooked me up with some of those early early Sonic 2 "beta"-type screens for my Sonic the Conspiracy page back before the rom turned up and everything blew horribly, horribly out of control!

I just do the art and general design-stuff for Sky Puppy (also level design, a task we were going to share but somehow it's all fallen on me so far). Actually, that might have been it, I think I saw your name listed on some indie game project, or it might even have been a cell phone thing... AHAH I remember!! Pow Pow's Great Adventure! I remember looking forward to that... playing it.... not so good. But that was what it was, that was what caused me to look you up to make sure you were who I thought you were. I was really surprised to see you pop up there!

Oh, you were that guy asking for those beta pics. lol

Yeah, I remember that Virtual On pic. Man, that is ancient history. I wonder if I still have it. It wasn't much to look at.

Aw, Pow Pow, it's from a guy I knew from some forum. He approached me with some early demo with placeholder characters, for all intent and purposes, it was a Bug! clone. The project was entirely his brainchild, except for music, 2D and 3D characters where he needed help but his input was crucial and we did our best to deliver what he wanted. He had a pretty clear vision.

What I had to do was to illustrate the story entirely, create some promo and standalone art and design/animate a wide variety of characters. All under a strict deadline.

The last part was tricky because I didn't touch the game, I just sent him animation cells and I'd trust him to animate them correctly in-game. I would send him animated GIF's to guide him, but one insurmontable difficulty was stretching and squashing characters in-game, it never really worked with the animation engine he did before contacting me. But what I liked was that it was my first attempt to seriously do animation on a computer.
