And now for something different.

I'm a big fan of Skies of Arcadia. I even own the Eternal Arcadia LE Box. Good for me.

Now, some of you undoubtedly played and probably enjoyed Skies of Arcadia. Well, you all remember Vyse, right? Do you remember his costly special move, Pirates' Wrath? It's pretty special, but it gets a whole new sense of awesome when you hear it in Japanese instead.

We're all fairly familiar with Engrish. It's non-stop entertainment for us gaijin. You see, in the the Japanese release of Eternal Arcadia, Sega in all their wisdom decided that having Vyse scream "Jolly Roger!" at the top of his lungs as he performs his most devastating move would be a fantastic idea, because Jolly Roger is a pirate and this is a game about pirates, right? Well, more like "JORRRRRRRYYYYYYYYYY ROGAARRRRRRRR!!!!!" which is the equivalent of me drop kicking someone in the face and screaming "HUUUUUUUUUUUULLLLLLLK HOGAAAAAAAAANNNNNNN!!!!!".

WITNESS IT IN ALL ITS GLORY.

Edit: Hell, while I'm at it, here's Aika and Alpha Storm too.

Jolly Roger is the name of the move in the Japanese version.

What gave that away? You know, aside from Vyse screaming it while slashing with his cutlasses. Heh...

I hear a lot of the moves were renamed, such as Cutlass Dance and Cutlass Fury. I know I found a list of everything that was changed a long time ago...

Oh <a href="http://www.ladollylatte.com/mss/interest.html" target="_blank">here it is</a>.

But anyway, I don't really like the japanese voice acting for Eternal Arcadia... Vyse sounds like he's about to die every time he gets hit. Something that goes like this:

*Looper attacks Vyse*
Vyse: AAAAAH!!! Oh my mother fuckin' GOD that fuckin' hurt that I'm going to scream AAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH really loud!

Of course, all I had to go by was the demo disc that came with the DC magazine.

I also suggest visiting <a href="http://www.geocities.com/flowerchild1983x/">Belle is Bouncy</a>.

Er... yeah. Not that the English voice acting is particularly good either.

It's things like that that makes me glad that I played and beaten Skies of Arcadia and own Skies of Arcadia Legend.

It almost makes me want to play the game for old times sake.

Jolly Roger is actually the skull-and-crossbones motif that pirates adopted as their symbol. Yes.

And the Union Jack is your flag. As much as I love my country "Star-Spangled Banner" just doesn't quite measure up to "Union Jack."

The American flag's name is actually Old Glory. But yeah, Union Jack sounds like the name of a totally awesome hamburger. It wins.

It's a combination of three flags, of course it's hardcore.

Well j-man, infact 'Jolly Roger ' is a generic name for any design of pirate flag. Commonly this is the skull and crossbones motif, but not exclusively.

Also, for everyone's benefit, Our Flag should only really be refferred to as the 'Union Jack' when flown from the bow of a ship. Otherwise it is a 'Union Flag'.

So now you know.

Whilst we are on the subject of both flags and SoA, which flag did you choose? I always liked Fina's dolphin, I think it's because of my gentle feminine side. (I'm not gay.)

I just remembered that when I was four or five I thought it was called the Onion Jack, which makes it sound even more like a burger.

Fixed the above recently broken links. And for further amusement, two more videos that I had also recorded but didn't link:

Lunar Glyph
Rain of Swords

One thing I noticed about the import is that the voice distortion effect is much more apparent during special moves. Of course, I also remember one of my playthroughs on the import where the distortion effect didn't turn off after Fina's Lunar Blessing, and all voices stayed distorted for the rest of the fight. Never been able to replicate it though.
