Does anybody know the worldwide sales figures for Sonic 2?

Post by AGES YMMAS »

For years I have used google and other search engines to try to find the answer even tried to email SEGA AMERICA but have not been able to find the figures.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 became the Mega Drive’s best selling title ever and ultimately the best selling 16-Bit title
http://www.dcshooters.co.uk/sonic/sonic ... sonic2.php
It would be difficult even then to see the imaginatively titled Sonic the Hedgehog 2 becoming what it eventually did, the biggest selling 16 bit game of all time
http://www.consolepassion.co.uk/review-sonic-2.htm
Not surprisingly, after Sonic 2 was released on "Sonic 2's day," it set the record as the best selling video game of all time, and continued to hold that title for years.

This is all I can find. But no actual final figures.

That's true, but it's an 8-bit game.

The third source says, however, that:

Actually I think it is Super Mario Brothers that is the best selling game of all time with 40+ million sold worldwide. Also, I remember reading Donkey Kong Country or Super Mario World was the best selling 16-bit game of all time.

EDIT: Here's a list I found though it is outdated--from 2004
1) Super Mario Bros. (NES) - 40 Million
2) Tetris (Game Boy) - 33 Million
3) Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) 18 Million
4) Super Mario World (SNES) - 17 Million
5) Super Mario Land (Game Boy) - 14 Million
6) Super Mario 64 (N64) - 11 Million
7) The Sims (PC) - 10 Million
8) Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) - 10 Million
9) Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (PS2) - 8.5 Million
10) Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS1) - 8 Million
11) GoldenEye (N64) - 8 Million
12) Donkey Kong Country (SNES) - 8 Million
13) Super Mario Kart (SNES) - 8 Million
14) Pokemon Red/Blue (Game Boy) - 8 Million
15) Half-Life (PC) - 8 Million
16) Tomb Raider II (PS1) - 8 Million
17) Final Fantasy VII (PS1) - 7.8 Million
18) Myst (PC) - 7 Million
19) Gran Turismo 3 (PS2) - 7 Million
20) Dragon Warrior VII (PS1) - 6 Million
Another list--this one's updated though for some reason it is missing some key games such as Dragon Quest VII, Pokemon RuSa and ReBlu...hmmm.
