Flicky has no smiley face

Post by Crazy Penguin »

A while back G. Silver or someone translated all the enemy names from the Sonic Advance 2 strategy guide, amongst them was this Flicky imitation. The name was translated to just "Flicky".

I recently noticed that the name is lacking a character from the original Flicky's name. From what I've seen Flicky's name seems to have always included that character (in fact all of the classic friends' names end in smiley face, telegraph pole and hyphen).

So what's the deal with the lack of smiley face in the robotic Flicky's name? Does it change the pronunciation of the name, or indicate anything in particular?

Oh, and does anyone have a better image of the robotic Flicky?

The pronunciation would be slightly different. The original is pronounced "furikkii" while the robo version is "furikii", with less emphasis on the "k". It's an awkward thing to translate, the best English equivalent would be the way you pronounce the "k" in the phrase "take cover!" (even though there are two "k" sounds, you pronounce them almost as one) as opposed to the quick "k" you might use in "cookie".

In a case like this, though, it's hard to say whether that was intentionally done to differentiate between Flicky the badnik and Flicky the bird or if it was simply an alternate kana spelling by someone who couldn't be bothered to look up the original. There are a few enemies in the Mega Collection strategy guide, for example, that have slightly different kana spellings than in the original manuals.
