Bad News:
1.) The US version of Sonic Gems Collection will NOT have the Japanese soundtrack in it.
2.) Streets of Rage will NOT be appearing thin the US version Sonic Gems Collection.
NikJam wrote:Also, according to the Japanese box art. Sonic R, CD and Fighters seem to be the only main Sonic games in it. Plus Six game gear games. (The Boxart says "3 + 6 !!!" )So no Chaotix, Arcade, 3d Blast PC, Shuffle or any other thing s we might want.
Vectorman 1 and 2 are also in the game, but unlike SoR these seem to be in the US version. So there's some good news.
All of this seems to be worth maybe $20 or $30 right? Well, more bad news! It's $40
Good news:
The Japanese version of Sonic Gems Collection DOES have the Japanese soundtrack in Sonic CD. the American version can't have it for "licensing" issues. Hope you have your PS2 or GC modded.

Guess I don't have to worry about whether or not the PS2 version gets released here, since I'll be importing.

*Shrugs* I'm still buying the game, import or not. I first played Sonic CD with the US soundtrack and even then I concluded it to be my personal favorite. I won't say no to Vectorman either.
My sole concern is whether or not Chaotix will be on it, but we don't need to go any further on that subject. I would be cool, however, if there was a code like in Sonic Mega Collection, for Sonic 1, to toggle versions of Sonic CD. It most likely won't happen, but a guy could dream.

Gems Collection was always bad news. Compilations of decade old games is everything wrong with the industry.

Actually I was making a joke at the expense of all the selfish, asinine elitists that believe there are problems in the industry when games they aren't interested in are released for the enjoyment of people that have different taste.
That said, Gems Collection still looks boring, and for forty dollars too.

How is this an issue of taste?

Right now I'd be questioning, "How does a compilation consisting of Sonic CD, the first home conversion of Sonic the Fighters, two Vectorman games, and the only Sonic game with the mysterious curse of the Tails Doll look boring?" But then I realized this is GHZ. Go figure.

Maybe because they're games that we've already played. Ten years ago.
Though I must admit, releasing them in a package is still more noble than rereleasing them one-by-one on the GBA, for $40 each.

I'm with you there. It's like the Super Mario Advance games (Assuming that's what you're speaking of).

That and every other SNES game ever made. That's more or less all the GBA is good for, if you ever wanted to play your 16-bit collection with a smaller screen. As Luigi. You have to buy 'em all again, though.

Sadly they never imported Super Mario RPG to the GBA...maybe for the DS...losers....and I won't be getting the Sonic Gems Collection considering I have some of those games and 40 dollars is too steep for such a lackluster collection...

We got Superstar Saga though, which is just as good.

I've never played SCD, SR and StF, so it's still worth buying. There's still some hope for Chaotix, but I guess these three games alone are worth the $40. Anyway, I remember someone once posted something about "special surprises" in the GG games- it'll be good enough if it's a save feature and/or remixed musics.

Well some people obviously prefer this compilation games over another sort of game, or else Sonic Team would not be releasing them. In other words, somebody obviously thinks these games are in good taste.

I like the idea of compilations. It appeals to the collector in me. Even if I have played many or all of the games before, there's just something nice about having everything all in one place.
Which is why I won't be buying Gems Collection. The whole point of compilations is to be complete, for God's sake. This is supposed to be the title that fills in all the gaps in the original collection. Where the fuck is Chaotix? The lineup is thin enough already, why not pad it with a game that is actually related to the series instead of bloody Vectorman? And why include only the second six game gear games, when Gems is a North American exclusive for the ONE console that DIDN'T have the other six in the original collection?
It's not like they're holding back enough to pad out a third collection. These games are just missing. I swear to god, who goes to all the trouble to port Sonic the Fighters and Sonic R, then leaves out some of the quickest, easiest, no brainer ports ever? It's like they're trying to cripple the collection's completeness on purpose. And completeness is all a second collection of also-rans like this had going for it. What a load of bullshit.

I think the games on it are great (well, a couple of them). That's got nothing to do with whether or not I think they should be rereleased or the manner in which they are rereleased.
The idea of compilations doesn't bother me so much as long as they are
good compilations (which I don't consider Gems Collection to be). What offends me is the capacity for consumers to repeatedly be fooled into buying the same product. The sort of thing that's going to make people buy the Revolution because they can play N64 games on it. I didn't buy a DS so I could fucking play Mario 64 again, with that retarded plastic slider no less, but of course that's the current top selling game for the system. This is a problem. It's got nothing to do with likes or dislikes.

I'll be buying Gems Collection. I never owned a Saturn, so it's worth it for Sonic R. I never got a chance to play Sonic the Fighters, so that might be fun. And my Genesis is falling apart (it takes an hour to get it to work), so it'll be worth getting for Sonic CD, even if it does have the U.S. soundtrack. The Vectorman games are kinda nice, too. And to those whining about the Gameucbe version only having six Game Gear games: remember, Sonic Adventure DX had all the Game Gear games in them.
Is this collection pointless? Hell yes. Should I be spending money on it? Probably not. Though owning a Mac (and thus not having access to a 32X / Sega CD emulator as a result, since they all run on Windows), it will be worth playing games I missed out on the first time around.

But will you be willing to pay another $40 for Chaotix, Waku Waku Sonic Patrol Car, and Sonic's Schoolhouse in Sonic Ultra Collection next year? Or if all you want is Sonic the Fighters, you might be better off waiting for Sonic Gems Collection Reprise on the Xbox and PC, because it'll have Boogerman and Chibi Maruko-chan's Waku Waku Shopping as unlockables, plus the Game.com version of Sonic Jam.
And will you buy them again when they rererererelease the same games on the PlayStation 6 eight years from now? By that point we may not have any choice, because I speculate original games will no longer be made due to lack of profitability. People just want to play Metal Gear 12 and the sixteenth edition of Final Fantasy II, which will have two new enemy sprites and another 3 minutes of CG cutscenes.

I understand what you all are on about. We gamers need more original titles and not just rehashes, remakes, compilations, or direct ports of existing franchises. That's why we loved NiGHTS into Dreams. That's why we loved the classic Sonic games. That's why we loved Katamari Damacy, Ristar, or Jet Set Radio. I'm starting to get why you guys always frown upon the industry as of late. We feel the gaming industry should take advantage of the technology we have today and create new forms of gameplay, as well as new worlds. But no, we only evolve graphically. This is why Sonic Adventure DX is reffered to as a "shoddy-ass port" here. It's the same goddamn thing but with new textures and nifty water effects. We didn't like Sonic Heroes because it barely showed any evolution at all from Sonic Adventure 2. It played exactly the same way, but only with that rediculous team gimmick.
*Exhales* Well, you guys taught me something. Gaming is about looking for fun and new ways to explore these virtual worlds that allow us to do things we have never, ever concieved of doing before. It's not about who's the better character, or which system gets the most sales. It's all in ORIGINALITY! *Flings magic wand*

Originality is overrated.
But with the current state of the industry, originality is sorely wanted/needed.
Let's talk about sequels that should be made. I think Beyond Good & Evil needs to be completed. Damn that somewhat cliffhanger-ish ending.
Uh, that's all I can think of at the present state of time, though.
