School is cool

School is cool. How else can I explain why I’m enrolling for an MA course after spending 3 years completing a BA. Sonic must also believe in the coolness of school, as he appeared in not one but two ‘eductainment’ titles.

Sonic Game World, the first of the hedgehog’s educational stints, is a complete mystery to most fans, having appeared on the Sega Pico system, which by most accounts, was an even bigger failure than the 32X. However, thanks to the endless generosity of Hari Hari, we’ve finally got scans of the game’s Japanese manual, which details the storyline and all the mini-games contained within the title.

Download Zip File

Feel free to distribute these scans on other sites, but you must give credit to Hari Hari and his web site Act Select, or you’ll get detention. Linking to the above file is permitted.

G.Silver, could you please translate the story and character profiles (on scan page ‘sgw2’)? It would be great to finally know the story behind those interesting artwork pieces than Rlan posted a while ago. ^_^

I'm no Silver, but to the best I can tell, there's not really any actual "story" on that page, except that the game takes place in a 5-story "Gameworld" where Sonic and Tails compete against Eggman in a variety of minigames. The character profiles are just simple introductions and don't look like they contain any real info, unless you didn't know that Sonic was a hedgehog or that Amy was a cute little girl (a debatable point).

I'm interested in knowing the mechanics to the "Hataage Game" on floor 2 and the "Chaos Sagashi Game" on the last floor. The rest are self-explanitory.

And yet, nobody has a decent scan of the Chaotix manual.

Hata Ageru - "Flag Raising." It's basically Simon says, Eggman raises or lowers his white and red flags, and you press buttons in response to raise and lower your own.

Chaos Sagashi - "Emerald Search" (the manual calls them "chaos," I guess "emurarudo" is too hard a katakana word for the little kids). You move your character around the screen and try to pick up the emeralds before Eggman does. Apparently there are five floors you can search on, and touching enemies or other obstacles causes you to freeze for a moment.

And yeah, I don't see anything good on the characters page either, as usual. When will they learn that we demand epic storylines for our edutainment titles?

He is? The upcoming release list from Nintendo would indicate otherwise.

Thanks for the info. I wasn’t expecting an epic storyline, but I was hoping it might explain a bit about the Game World or why Eggman went there.

Game World seemed to be bit a more respectful of the story line compared to other spin-offs, as it didn't try to force in popular characters (such as Knuckles) that didn't suit its themes. ^_^

Stupid hats are usually large and so can hide material for cheating in exams. Altogether now, class: “Smart people wear stupid hatsâ€￾. ^_^

So when will Shadow the Hedgehog GameWorld be released?

I don't think it was 5 floors in Chaos Sagashi. There were 5 emeralds, but only 3 floors if I remember correctly.

Can we compromise with 4 floors? (looking again, it looks like that is actually what it says, not sure where I grabbed that 5 from)
