Re: 9th time's the charm
Actually your comic analogy is perfect. Your comic uses black and white, just like a newspaper comic, but the format is your own, frequently your comics are double (and occasionally even triple) their minimum four-panel length, and the art is huge and detailed. You ARE doing things stylistically (and in terms of content as well) that is not possible in the so-called "outdated" newspaper comic medium.
Capcom is making a newspaper comic. It's exactly the same old three panels of Garfield we've all read over and over.
Instead of infusing new and interesting life into an old medium (which is what Sam & Fuzzy does), this new game appears to be the exact same thing we got sick of probably before MM6 even came out. If I wanted to play a new Megaman game that was styled like that, I'd play MM5 or MM6, because by the time they came out, I no longer gave a shit.
If they did something interesting with those old Megaman graphics, like Taito did with Space Invaders Extreme, then that would be something! That's modern! That's worth playing! That is proof that you can do interesting things with simple 2D graphics! And if you want to just make 100% oldschool Megaman games, that's fine! But when you're Capcom, there are expectations that people have, and that's why we're complaining now.

Re: 9th time's the charm
I know this is extremely unlikely, but I'm going to try to think optimistically.
Maybe you play through different levels in different bit levels. For example, you start off as the original sprite with 8-bit level graphics and then the levels start to get more detailed and then your character becomes more detailed too. I'm thinking of something similar to Mickey Mania. (Except with Mickey's adventure, through his cartoons, the character you controlled was always the modern, 90's, Mickey with different era Mickeys within the levels.) I highly doubt this is the case with this game though.
Too bad Sega will never do something like this for Sonic... or at least not do it right.

I'm just glad a new Classic Series game is being made, period.
Also, I found hi-res scans of the Nintendo Power article/interview:

Re: 9th time's the charm
I hope it's more like Mega Man 5 or 6 than 2 or 3. I must be the only one who thinks the last two NES Mega Man games were more fun than the earlier ones.

Re: 9th time's the charm
This is the single greatest instance of fanservice in the history of every franchise ever created. Roll could flash tit and it would still pale in comparison to this by several orders of magnitude. Keiji Inafune really does mean business. He means serious fucking business here.

Re: 9th time's the charm
Capcom clearly has a time machine, and they used it to change history. That is the only explanation.

Re: 9th time's the charm
Holy shit. I was saying to WB the other week that they should have wildly off-model American/European box art if they really wanted to capture the spirit of classic Mega Man... I never thought they'd actually fucking do it!

Only as a promotion, I'm sure. It looks like the thing's only available on limited-edition t-shirts.

Re: 9th time's the charm
I love that he has both the gun, which was the old box art's misinterpretation of his arm cannon, as well as an actual arm cannon. I'm not a huge fan of the series, but the latest Retronauts podcast had a bit of talk about a Sega rep mentioning they were impressed with the recent remakes like MM9 and Bionic Commando Rearmed and considering their own options in said area.

Re: 9th time's the charm
Unless that person meant downloadable remakes specifically, Sega already has a leg up on this sort of thing. Trouble is, they keep the lot them bottled up in japan.

*applauds* Brilliant Capcom, I would've never thought of going that far with the retro theme!
I hope this is what appears on the channel window instead of the title screen.

The topic was retro-style legitimate sequels, methinks.FlashTHD wrote:Unless that person meant downloadable remakes specifically, Sega already has a leg up on this sort of thing. Trouble is, they keep the lot them bottled up in japan.

Re: 9th time's the charm
I'm not just impressed they emulated art from the generation but made art styled from something a Japanese to American rendition would look like.
