Probably, but you are gonna be pissed when the battery dies a lot sooner than you expected it too.

After a whole lot of cautious poking and proding I managed to switch out the battery and still have my memory a while back. That, or my memory is fake and has been replaced by robot karaoke teddy bears.

So what exactly is the average life expectancy of a Saturn Battery?

Well, they didn't last very long in the DC VMUs, so I'd say only a few weeks. Maybe about a month or so.

But when the batteries didn't work in the DC VMUs you could still save games. My batteries would only go dead when I played Chao Adventure religiously to get those 999 stats. It's a shame PSO didn't have a similar system for raising Mags on the VMU because they took so long to raise inside the game, and you could only ever raise one at a time because of the FSOD.

Oh dear, looks like I'll just have to get a memory card (which also seem to have low life expectancy). Funny how nothing lasts long on the system that died out sooner than it should have.

There were some fantastic games on the Saturn, but the system itself really was a piece of shit. It was a poorly designed and shoddily constructed piece of hardware.

You mean the battery back-up thing for saved games? It's more like years. VMUs ran out of batteries that let you use them on the go really fast, but they've still got all my game saves on them.

I don't like the way that the VMU's battery drained even when it was plugged into the controller

It seemed like my first battery lasted forever, but now it always seems like I just replaced it. I assume this is because I don't play the Saturn as much as I used to, so the year or so that it lasts is mostly unplayed, a wasted battery.

The memory carts might die after a while (mine is still good) but there's definitly no harm in buying a fresh one now. A friend of mine picked one up in Japan recently and when he got it back to the US it was working fine.

Another interesting thing about the Saturn's internal memory (btw, there's more than enough room for the games you mentioned..) is that it SEEMS to retain itself whether the battery is charged or not for a short while. I use a convertor for my Japanese games (which is not the recomendable way to go, to be honest), requiring all my save games to be in internal memory for me to be able to use them. But I was able to copy the game data I wanted onto the Saturn, switch it off, swap the carts, turn it back on, and low and behold, the save data was still there. I don't know if that's just the nature of the Saturn or maybe the batteries can squeeze out that last little bit of memory with the right encouragement, but it's kind of weird.

Meanwhile, my SegaCD's invincible internal RAM continues to retain data for the three games I own that actually made use of it. :P
