I still would say that there is definite thing as a game formula and game mechanics. As a very general example as a formula I could offer Sonic as a good one. Basic and intuitive, it really didn't need to change through the 2D era. Some other ones, like Aero the Acrobat, failed at the platform formula (despite arguably putting in effort) and sucked. Mechanics is defined as "The functional and technical aspects of an activity" by dictionary.com. I hardly think mechanics is BS. I would argue that many games become much more technical while others remain clunky and unrefined.
Perfect I meant subjectively, as in I would call most really good games perfect at what they try to accomplish. Halo did achieve that formula-wise, although some of the levels may have been less than inspired. I understand no game is created by an omnipotent force and so therefore will never reach the condition of being the undeniable best game ever, so I use perfect a bit more liberally although I still only apply it to things I think are the best in a specified category.
I think this is just getting to be a long and pointless argument since we've established that no one's opinions are going to change. I think NT wins by default since he's the admin.

Fair enough, so long as you stay on the southern side of the border. And on the topic of loving over-hyped games, the first thing I am going to do come November 9th is fuck the disc. Hell, I'll have a threesome with the special edition DVD.And you're just bitter because nobody loves an over-hyped game as much as you do.

You do know that "objective" simply means uninfluenced by some personal bias, right?... It doesn't mean that he doesn't think his opinion is superior or yours is wrong or whatever you think he was getting at. Because, if you really seriously are trying to compare two games to each other, then the only way to fairly do so is with an objective approach. If there's even the slightest amount of bias in your judgement then it's only a personal judgement and cannot be applied to anyone else. At all.chriscaffee wrote:NT, I find it humorous that you prempted your posts by calling yourself objective. The implication here is that your opinions are based purely on each individual game's own merit whereas other people (that favor Halo, since you haven't rebutted anyone else) must be basing their opinion off of some irrational attachment to the game or they are smoking something. Isn't it possible that people just disagree with you?
Here is a question for you. When you posted in this topic were you trying to explain why you hold your opinion or were you trying to convince other people that your opinion is right or superior? Judging by the hostility of your last post, I'm assuming the latter.
I am offended that you would say my opinion of Halo sucks (or was that comment exclusive to Dark Dolphin?). That is you insulting my opinion, and thus insulting me. I'm not so much hurt by it as I find it intellectually bankrupt to talk about how objective you are and then you go around telling peole that their opinions are inferior. Hopefully that was a just a "pwning" moment and you don't really think that about someone who enjoys Halo more then any other FPS. I certainly respect your opinion.

Some people just can't let dead dogs lie...
It's impossible to be without bias. There is no objective standard for what makes a good game, because the term good in and of itself is completely subjective. You cannot have an objective veiwpoint that relies on subjectivity. Therefore the only comparisons you can draw are observations, without judgment. Such observations are meaningless because any jackass can figure them out just by playing the game. I'm imagining how the objective conversation would go.
A: Hi, I'm objective. You can have two weapons in Halo.
B: Actually you can have up to three weapons in Halo, provided you know the Pillar of Autumn glitch.
A: If you want to be technical you can carry five weapons, including grenades.
B: I cede you that point.
Where else can it possibly go? Without any sort of opinion included it is meaningless banter. You might as well just be playing the game or reading an instruction manual or some other static medium such as a webpage about the game. That's why the claim to being "objective" was both wrong and asinine.

I really don't give a crap about either Halo 2 or Half-Life in the least. So you could say I'm objective if I try to compare the two (which I'm actually not...).
Being objective doesn't require me to consider every single last aspect of a game, including glitches. It does not require me to not form my judgement. It does not require me to simply state facts. It requires me to form my opinion without bias.
