Why is SEGA making an NES styled game and not a Master System or SG-1000 one? :(

I guess this is Sega's Mega Man 9.

Too bad Sega doesn't have any memorable character-based series that would benefit from going back to early '90's game design without coming up with a new IP.

The irony is sickening. Sega keeps churning out brand new games using nothing but Sonic (a classic character), and when the time comes to make a game that's actually rooted in the days of the classics, they come up with a completely new IP. I mean....what the fuck?

Gonintendo has a scan of the article, which has some screenshots and some Pole character art.

There's no Pole character art there. The wolf is a Famitsu character...

Screens look nice, though. Any chance in hell of a US release, I wonder? I might buy it.

Man, I hope that Sega includes some of their own 8-bit legacy into this game, rather than just exclusively Nintendo's, as the screenshots suggest. I mean, I know that the general gaming public is well aware of 8-bit Nintendo nostalgia, but this is a SEGA game! Rather than looking at other companies for inspiration, Sega should instead look to their own 8-bit gaming icons. You know, like, uhm... ugh...

...Alex Kid, and, uhmmm.....

...Dammit. Nevermind. This new game seems like a cheap attempt to milk Nintendo's legacy. There, I said it.

And OutRun, and Space Harrier, and Hang-On, and Shinobi, and Phantasy Star...

Sure, maybe only a scant few here were actually for 8-bit consoles - but they sure as heck were around at the same time.

Oops, forgot all of those, Shadow Hog, P.P.A. I was going to mention Space Harrier, but I thought it originated before the 8-bit era proper.

It costs five dollars, not a big project. Compare it to Megaman 9 that costs 10 + all that DLC (which is just unlocking stuff, making the intial price seem cheaper than it really is if you want all the features).

Also they mistranslated it to Famicom, apparently. Pretty sure this is just about 8-bit, which probably includes SEGA games if so.

Sega can't make good Sonic games, so they assume they can make good Mario games, now? Perfectly logical.

Ballfuckery. I was really excited for a second there, thinking that Sega were poised to hearken back to the days of the dime a dozen generic animal mascot-driven platformer. The subsequent crash left me quite bitter, and now I'm finding it pretty difficult to care about this venture in the least.

Because, you know, those screens look like dogshit. This game had better be really, really funny, and Japan is seldom funny when it's actually trying to be.

Of course the concept is HILARIOUS, it looks just like a Mario game, but it's NOT. Don't you see the hilarity?!

I thought that Pole character was going to be the focus of the game too, until somebody said he was a Famitsu character. I cannot decide which would be worse... Sega creating its own "Sonic clone" (with results probably similar to Billy Hatcher), or Sega bastardizing video game history, even if they have a bit of leeway for actual substance because it's supposed to be a "parody".

The game is supposed to be a parody of 8-bit titles and probably has nothing to do with Sonic. What are you guys on about?

Change your tampons or something.

Wolf dude has been the Famitsu mascot since time immemorial. http://www.famitsu.com/wf/

And I'm gonna play holic's note by saying this looks like one helluva stupid, crap WiiWare game and it's time to move on to something else, preferably relevant in nature.

It's pretty jarring how the character is so deliberately American. Something tongue-in-cheek like that would've been perfect for this sort of game.

I kinda like him, though! Does he have a name? Kogen wants to know if he's single.

It looks like one of those super pretentious "art" games i've been reading about on Insert Credit.

And here's a trailer showing the game in action. Gotta love that old-school "SEGAAAAA" voice clip.

Dear Sega: You don't have the right to make fun of Mario considering you've been making shitty mascot games for the past 10 years and I cannot think of a truly bad Mario game made by Nintendo made ever. Please stop.

Sincerely, a gamer who got tired of Sonic and Mario sticking their tongues out at eachother in the mid 90s.

PS: Crawling into a sewer pipe and coming out covered in shit and eating a mushroom that makes you grow so big that you die is something a bad webcomic artist would come up with in his first strip.

Now I really want to see Nintendo make a blatant Sonic parody and have it beat the shit out of anything Sega's done recently.

Ok I admit eating a mushroom and growing to big is really stupid but the whole going into a pipe and ending up being covered in shit, I thought that was pretty funny.

also the sprite versions of the character portraits look bad ass.

A better joke would be disproportionate growth. Like the head growing 10 times it's normal size but not the rest of the character.
