They don't help at all. But they're like a neverending rainy day funbox.

It seems like Double S is going into caffee's territory: arguing for argument's sake.

First of all, Psychology and Philosophy are nothing alike. Philosophy is a means of figuring out how and why existence is the way it is. Psychology is an actual science, and one that deals in mental processes and behavior.

One can run tests and do research based on Psychology, and it is impossible to do the same things with Philosophy. Psychology covers a wide range of fields, including: Neuroscience, the Nature vs. Nurture debate, Physical, Cognitive and Social development, Sensation and Perception, States of Consciousness, Learning and Memory, Motivation, Emotion, and Personality. And that's barely scratching the surface.

Philosophy, on the other hand, tends to deal with questions such as, "Why are we here? What is our purpose? Is there a God?"

They are vastly different things.

They make people think about thinking. My point exactly.
Based on this reasoning, I could say that Books, Movies, Video Games, & TV shows are all the same thing, as they are all forms of entertainment. Likewise, Biology and Chemistry are the same thing as they are both Sciences. That doesn't make it true.
What I mean to say is, when was the last time philosophy or psychology helped people in a substantial way. I can think of cars, buildings, and computers as engineering feats which helped society. Name a philosophical or psychologcal theory which did anything like that.
No one here has even said anything about Philosophy, besides yourself, so I don't know why you're entering that into the equation.

Granted, it is hard to think of an answer to that question, but that doesn't mean that Psychology as a whole should be disregarded. On an individual level, Psychology has helped many people get rid of their own Psychologicla problems and disorders. I guess the best way to answer your question would be this: Psychology has given us a better understanding of why and how human being act the way they do.

Yes, psychology makes people think about thinking. It helps them delve into such matters as mental disease and coping factors, and try to understand it. As plasticwingsbad basically said, psychology gives us a better understanding of why and how people act the way they do.

Were it not for psychology, we would not understand as much about the mind as we do today.

The philosophy course I took last semester (which was quite a joke of a class, I might add) asked those philosophical questions you mentioned and also asked "What makes people do these things/why/etc" which is basically psychology. So I guess that's why I cross the two subjects pretty easily.

True, but I mean it's one thing to be entertainment, something else entirely to be something "serious". Also Biology and Chemistry are the study of the atomic/chemical structure of things, which are well set. The human mind, however, is an extremely fickle thing which varies widely from person to person, and I don't think any amount of study could ever analyze it very well.

Of course psychology at its basic definition should not be cast aside. I practice psychology on myself all the time when I analyze my thoughts or actions. But I'm not ever going to let somebody else's theory tell me what it was that made me do or think something. That's just trying to shift the blame off onto something else. I mean, unless I'm psychologically disturbed or unstable (in which situation psychology may be a useful thing), if I don't know why the heck I did something, then I don't see how somebody else would.

Go out and pick up the current issue of National Geographic. Seriously. Go pick it up right now. There's a whole damn section about that exact subject, and how studying the mind is leading to incredible new developments.

Anyway, philosophy isn't that useless. I mean, where do you think the Democratic rights came from? The U.S.A.?

Philosophy is useless. We should all just sit at home and watch American Idle while eating Doritos and touching ourselves.
