There needs to be more Franz Ferdinand in the world.

Every time someone says that Muse are Radiohead rip-offs because they remember reading it in some asshole magazine, a fairy loses its wings. Where the fuck are you, 1999? Showbiz was a rocky little number that had plenty of Radiohead influence, but I challenge you to find a tangible link between the two bands from Origin of Symmetry onwards. Have you even heard much of their later material? It's mind-blowing-- all monster riffs and epic piano.Baba O'Reily wrote:Because Muse is a second-rate Radiohead. Given what Radiohead is (A second-rate Pink Floyd), I'm not their biggest fan.
I do rather like Hysteria, though.
I won't even address the Pink Floyd --> Radiohead comment.

I don't disagree about the White Stripes wearing their influences on their sleeves, but they're not nearly as obvious about it as Jet. If AC/DC and the Rolling Stones had a baby, Jet would be the baby's cover band.Esrever wrote:I am capable of enjoying the White Stripes, but I sure don't understand the folks who treat them like the second coming. They're stuff is catchy enough, but it's nothing new. They're easily as derrivative as bands like, say, Jet... just derrivative of a different kind of rock music.
I quite like the Strokes. They strike me as an almost pop version of My Bloody Valentine or Sonic Youth, with the whole white noise rock thing.I'll never get the lifeless, monotone buzz of the Strokes, though. They sound like a version of Franz Ferdinand where everyone in the band is dead.

Muse sound a lot like Radiohead. This is admittedly less true with their new material, but still, there isn't exactly a wide stylistic trench from Muse songs like Hysteria and Time is Running Out to Radiohead songs like Paranoid Android and Electioneering. It would be less noticible if Muse's lead singer didn't sound so much like Yorke. I think Muse is a pretty good band, not just some shallow rip-off, but it's hard for me to deny the similar sound.
If anyone cares, I recently ran through my ten favouirte albums of the year on my website. The first three are in the rant section here, and the other seven are in the next two archive entries.

Matt Bellamy doesn't sound like Thom fucking Yorke. If you really have to compare him to someone vocally on pain of death, then at least get it right and compare him to Jeff Buckley.Esrever wrote:It would be less noticible if Muse's lead singer didn't sound so much like Yorke. Your right, they don't sound similar. Thom fucking Yorke probably kind of like two men having sex, while Bellemy sounds more like Thom Yorke.
Look, mate, I've got ears. They sound similar. From the warbly self-aware quiet gurgle to the louder, I-can't-actually-shout-so-I'll-do-it-through-my-nose-instead nasal turbo-whine variation. I'm not saying they sound identical. Bellemy has more power, while Yorke sounds more like he is slowly choking to death on his own lyrics. But they still sound similar -- all the more so because they often sing the same genre of drudging, minor key, echoy, sensitive-yet-powerful insights-on-society quasi-artsy-but-still-riff-laden man rock.
(I, incidently, like both of these singers.)

Well sure, they're both bands playing in similar genres, but... they're also vastly different. It's like pointing out that The Who and Led Zeppelin sort of sound the same-- they were both bands playing similar sort of genres around at the same sort of time. What I object to is when people dimiss Muse as Radiohead copycats or whatever, 'cause... it's bullshit.Esrever wrote:Muse sound a lot like Radiohead.
