The piano is a serious bitch. I mean really, how impractical is it to have an instrument where every single note requires it's own seperate button? Usually knowing how to play one instrument makes it easier to pick up another, but the piano controls so differently from everything else that it's kind of a pain to get the hang of. It is essentially a percusion instrument. Anyhow, the "secret" is to practice different chord voicings chromatically through all the keys, so that you start to get muscle memory that helps your hands slide into the right positions quickly. But it's still a pain in the arse.

I did pretty well this Christmas. I got two CD's by Medeski, Martin and Wood: an organ-fronted trio whose music is basically a fusion of jazz, funk and hip hop. It's awesome stuff.

I also got a copy of Flight, an absolutely gorgeous comic anthology that features some great young cartoonists like Kazu Kibuishi (http://www.boltcity.com/) and Vera Brogsal (http://rts.lunistice.com/). Most of the contributors are only a year or two older than me, and make me feel almost totally inadaquate. But it's still a fantastic book.

Usually my folks never buy me video games, but they did get me a copy of MGS:TS this year because I told them about a place where they could get it used for $20. They also found (somehow) a DVD with a few episodes of the Burns and Allan show, which is a depressing reminder of how terrible and unfunny sitcoms have become today. Man, Burns was already doing that whole "talk to the camera" bit that shows like Malcom in the Middle love... and this was made in the fifties! It's bloody hillarious.

As usual, my lady Claire is building me something, but it is not quite finished yet! I'm eager to see what it is this time. :)

I've been playing guitar for years so I know some music theory, but the one thing I never did learn was how to read music. I spent the whole of Christmas Day working out how to read it, and now I can, but not without sitting down and working each bar out for five minutes and then spending another five minutes working out where the goddamn keys are. This is the hardest thing of all time. You're clearly cheating somehow.

America the Book is excellent. I got it for my birthday last month.
For Christmas I got a bunch of CDs, a battery-less flashlight, some sweaters I traded for a Barnes and Noble gift card, and running clothes. And also a new alternator and battery for my car.

I now possess:

Bossanova by the Pixies
The White Album
The dark side of the moon
Spongebob Squarepants Video
Navy blue jackets, for some reason
Loads of pads and some nice art pens
A ridiculous hat
And a dragon.
I also got AN A3 SCANNER! Now I can post in the art section! Or at least, I will when my CD drive starts working again.

Speaking of art, I usually also get a grotesque amount of "learn to draw cartoons!!!" books. Does that ever happen with the other artistic souls on this forum? Younger sisters and distant aunts are usually prime suspects for this kind of thing. I really hate it when I get a book full of some idiot artist - who from his style looks like he does the drawings inside all of those whiz kidz! puzzle bookz!!! - trying to impose his style on me. Although it's always possible they're hinting.

I have some "How to Draw Pretty Manga Girls" book somewhere. It's kind of confusing.

Actually those "How to Draw Manga" books are a pretty good resource for drawing techniques in general.

Oh yeah right, Mr Fantastic Artist. They're a bunch of generic manga drawings with "Copy this!" written next to them.

Learn the basic chords and their inversions. Start in C Major and learn the important chords: C, F, G, Am, etc.

I flipped through one of those at a Barnes and Noble once. There were lots of boobies and "how to draw people fucking", as I recall. I didn't complain.

Awesome, I've been waiting for someone to talk about this with. What do you think about the transition from Oshii to Yamazaki?

I was really concerned at first, being a huge fan of Oshii, but actually, when I first started watching UY, I had no idea Oshii was behind it. Now that we're in Yamazaki's territory, it's sort of brought things back into perspective and I'm remembering why I started watching in the first place. Oshii's penchant for surrealism and existential philosophy is great, and it almost pains me to say this, but I think maybe he'd taken the series far enough in that direction. While I think the third season will probably remain my favorite crop of episodes to the end of the series, the new episodes are still excellent, in a slightly different, more old-school sort of way.

I still haven't read the manga extensively, but I get the strong impression that this is much closer to Takahashi's original vision.

Someone needs to do a book like that. That same title, too. "How to Draw People Fucking". It would showcase all the most popular positions, and have extra chapters for male/male, female/female, and threesomes.

I'm not positive buy isn't Kanye West a rapper? I think my friend recommended it to my other friend once, which basically means it sounds like pure evil. I could be mistaken though.

My main gift was the Escape from New York Collector's Edition DVD ("Call me Snake!"), and some of the usual misc stuff, candy, small art supplies, that kind of thing. I'll be seeing my dad over New Year's so there's some Christmas coming later too, I think I'm getting a new coat or something.

I also got the Zeta Gundam box set, but that was from myself.
