I actually used to think about this alot. I'd go to that one Special Stage from Sonic CD, I think it's the third or fourth one, where it's all dark and there are like these glowing buildings or something in a rocky bay.
My next choice would be Spring Yard, because it's desolate and cool. I kind of don't think that was the original intent back in 1991, but that's always the vibe I got from it, and well, I diggit.

Well, you've all softened my heart with your talk of marijuana and furries. I would go to the GHZ, because I live in Texas I never see truly green grass unless rich white guys are playing golf on it. Thus, the idea of naturally green grass (rather than the coarse dead stuff I'm used to) always appealed to me. Plus checkered dirt. That was so darn cool.

I meant in more along the lines of seeing it in vast expanses without the sounds of cars whizzing by. I'm from Dallas, where pollution has caused the tides of the Trinity to wash a great multitude of plastic bags up onto the surrounding areas. Admittedly front yards are green, but those grand expanses of uninterrupted green always got to me.
