I could be wrong, but maybe it has something do with the ethnicity of black people, rather than the aesthetic difference of the skin color.

Last I checked, blue eyed people and redheads don't really have their own culture.

That said, why don't Native Americans have their own month? I mean, fuck, we took their land, destroyed their culture and put them on a reservation. And they don't even have their own month!

We still shit on them, I guess.

It's still stupid. Goths claim they have a culture.

And I'm pretty sure we do have a Native American month. I know we have Asian-Pacifics and Hispanics.

November for the record is the National American Indian Heritage Month. As in this month right now.

Chicanos share February with the African Americans.

International Women's day is on the 8th of March.

First I've heard of this. Which is why it's so funny.

Red-headed people weren't enslaved.
Well, to be fair - there was that time in America when "No Irish Need Apply" was in effect.

It seems kind of silly for them to have their own month. Native Americans aren't all the same ethnicity. It would be kind of like having an "European Month."

Not all Irish people are red-headed, you know. ;P And that happened to a lot of different nationalities.

Tell you what, I never knew that about the whole Kwanzaa thing that Zeta mentioned. There's a big Kwanzaa celebration thing going on this week, I think, on campus and now I know that it's all bullshit!

Bullshit, I say!

It's basically another version of this passive-agressive segreration we've got going on. "Oh, [ethnic minority] isn't different, we just think they need help from us white folks, 'cause gosh golly they have such a hard time doing it themselves!"

What you said is funny because it's usually white people that put minorities in a position where they'd need help in the first place!

Anyway, not to quibble over words but what you're describing isn't really segregation, per se. Absorption, maybe?

You know, "oh, the only thing really different about us is our skin color. Ebony and Ivory, you see. Well, we can get over that (maybe), honey, no problem. Just, you know, give up everything important to you and be more... white. Here's your tie and your mayonaisse. 'Kay, then?"

Delphine, I think you're taking it a bit far to suggest that an event celebrating black independence (or whatever this thing celebrates), is eqivalent to the establishment saying that black people can't be be politcally vocal on their own. Surley the reason there is an event is because black people are recognised politically and socially, because they have become independent.

What important values do black people have to give up in order to act white? What the hell is "acting white" anyway?

Apparently it involves wearing a tie and eating mayonaisse.

Yeah, that was just a throwaway reference to a guilty pleasure flick of mine, Undercover Brother.

Poorly worded as it might've been, the point I was trying to get at was although we think of and promte ourselves as a culturally plural nation, in reality all we're doing is forcing people to assimiliate to a single culture or ethnicity.

Maybe as a group dynamic, I really don't know. Even if it does happen, I don't so much think of it as people "forcing" others as it is just sort of easier to go with the flow.
