Oh. What's that?
Zeta wrote:Jingle Bell Rock is, I believe - a Christmas special about a North Pole elf who wants to start a rock and roll band and ends up writing the song "Jingle Bell Rock".

Fairly stupid. And seeing as how I'm a fan of just about any Christmas special no matter how insipid or smarmy, that's saying a lot.
Yeah, that is lame. And on the topic of lame Christmas specials, have you ever heard of "Clarabel's Wish", about a magical cow who wants to wants to become one of Santa's reindeer? I think it had a sequel, God help us.

Or what about this one program, "The Littlest Troll", or something, about this one troll who doesn't want to be evil, no matter what they teach him in "Troll School?"

My Grandma has seen both of those.

Before she started going doo-lolly -- she's always had bad taste.

What about that vest? And those boots?

At least, I hear she wears that.

J.E.Smith wrote:...you know, the Sally being naked debate doesn't really make sense when you consider all the Sonic Team males(minus the human characters of course, duh) wear nothing more than gloves and footwear. Her fur covers everything, you know.

Even though you guys don't count Sally as a real Sonic character, you have to count her as a Sega character because Sega owns the rights to her. It's like the Disney/Square-Enix deal, any original characters made by Square for Kingdom Hearts become Disney's property. Same thing here, any character made by DiC or Archie, no matter how half-assed or retarded they are, becomes Sega's property after all is said and done.

At one time Sega did care for Sally, even though she wasn't created by them. They were planning to make a game with her at one point, though nothing came out of it. They even stopped Archie from killing her off for good in the comic just in case they decided to make it one day, plus they were also putting out Sally plushes at the time.(The reason why Sally and the other SatAM characters were in the comic in the first place is because Sega ordered Archie to use them)Why make merchendise of a character from a cancelled cartoon, and who was killed off in the comic?
Heh, reminds me of something that happened a little while back amongst "Transformers" fans.

You see, some "TF" comic book writers for Destination Entertainment, which in turn was sub-contracted by (highly overated) Canadian comic book publishers Dreamwave Productions, claimed that they were creating their own continuity because Marvel, which published the original comic in the '80s and '90s (as well as co-producing the T.V. series and even creating the toyline's premise), owned the rights to the series -- every character, every story, every concept, eveything. Now, anyone who knows jack shit about "TFs" -- or copyright laws -- knew this was garbage (read: a lame excuse for their own narcissism), but there were quite a few people who were fooled, and still are, by this B.S.

Oh, and D.E. got fired for not reaching their deadline... but they're still doing a parrallel Universe, because D.W. is run by narcissists, too.

Esrever wrote:I didn't have a problem with the darker, more serious tone of SatAM... actually, that was what I liked about it the most. What really put me off was the infusion of the old restore-the-unrightfully-deposed-monarch structure into the plot. I mean, come on America, you rejected the monarchy hundreds of years ago, you can stop giving them ideological blowjobs in all of your cartoons now.

The other big offender was the character design. Even though they made Sonic and the other game characters look different, the new characters like Sally STILL looked like they belonged in a different cartoon. The designs just conflicted, and it never stopped looking bizarre.

Robotnik was ugly looking, but honestly, I didn't mind them making him more of a frightening dictator and less of a wacky genius. It's not like his character was all that developed beforehand, and it was interesting to seem him actually look... well, threatening! :)

AoStH was more like the games, but it was still really, really bad. It was a comedy show that wasn't funny. :/

Thank you!

That is why I enjoyed the stories in "Sonic Adventure" and "Sonic Adventure 2" so much -- they were grimmer in tone (especially "SA2", what with it's child-murdering paramilitaries and Gerald's subsequent descent into madness. Yikes). Heck, it's probably because of those two games brooding moods and themes of mass-murder that "Sonic Heroes" was light-hearted, fluffy, brainless crap.

Anyhow, while "Adventures of..." was closer in concept to the games, I strongly contest the notion that it was also closer in tone. After all, Eggman has always been a terrorist, a militant technocracist, and an all-around meglomaniacal bad guy. And while the tone of the games has often varied wildly, from the Miazaki Hayao-esque feel of "Sonic the Hedgehog CD" to the Watanabe Shinichiro-ish feel of the aforementioned "Sonic Adventure 2", Dr. Eggman/Dr. Ivo Robotnik/whatever has always been a rather nasty fellow. Sure, he's sometimes seemed a bit buffoonish, but in that laugh at me and my flunkies'll break your spine before you can blink way. Some good, albeit a tad more offbeat, examples of this concept are Dr. Drakken from "Kim Possible" and The Monarch from "The Venture Bros." -- they're incompetant, yet still threatening. Sure, in "Adventures of..." he was a terrorist, a meglomaniac, and incompetant, he wasn't a militant technocracist, nor was he particularly bad and/or threatening way. I mean, look at his goals. In the games, he looks at things from a "Cybermen"-type viewpoint: organic evolution can only go so far, robotics/bionics/cybernetics are so much better, so I'll go about "improving" everyone I can. He also cares not for the enviroment; he believes that artificial enviroments, like artificial life, are a vast improvement. These concepts were taken to their utmost conclusion in the SatAM series: instead of encasing organic life forms inside mechanical shells as pilots and then to subject said pilots to on-board mind control devices (anyone who's read the early "G.I.Joe" stories with the Snake Armor knows what I mean), we get organic life forms being transformed into machines. That's just creepy.

And what was Eggman's grand scheme in "AoStH"?

He wanted to cleanse the world of dancing, music, and fun.

At least when the Puritans and the Taliban tried that, they went and killed thousands of people in the process.

I mean, really. How lame.

And yeah, the other designs were really out of place.

In short, while I hope someday we'll get a half-way decent cartoon based off of "StH", must confess I still prefer (dislike less?) the one with the French coyote.

Heh, "ideological blowjobs"...

Zeta wrote:As I've said, even looking back - S&G had their moments. Maybe not laugh out loud humor, but enough to get a chuckle of a dopey grin.

G: "I'll take a chili dog."
S: "What? You don't eat."
G: "Chili cleans out my engines."
S: " . . . ugh."

The interaction between Sonic, Tails, and Robotnik was fairly humorlous and tiresome, though.
Heh, gotta love fiber.

Or the Seattle Mariners. Except they've been exploiting Ken Griffey all throughout the N64 era.

Does Nintendo still have part-ownership of the team?

Gee, I wonder why.

ICHIRO!!

Oh, and Esrever, about that monarchy thing... the company that has made all of the Western "StH" shows, DiC, is based in France. Which might explain their issues with coups, dictators, and resistance movements.

Doesn't matter if they have Ichiro, the team still sucks.
