The way I think of it is that Metal Sonic is a character. Despite not being that 3 dimensional until Heroes (where he only had that whole fetish for being the "real" Sonic), he was still established as a fully active member of the Sonic cast appearing in major roles in least 2 games before Heroes.

Mecha Sonic isn't a character. He's just a boss that looks like Sonic. There has been no mention of him in the story, so he's therefore quite irrelevant in terms of plot.

... at least, that's how I see it.

Well, that's pretty much the way I see it. But since whether it's a term or a name is a complete moot point in Japanese since they'd read it the exact same way in either case, it's still a consistent way of referring to the robots whether you have a capital letter there or not.

I just personally think that "mecha Sonic" looks weirder than "Mecha Sonic".

No, dear, that's <i>why</i> the term Locit used is wrong.

So, does the name "Metallix" mean anything to anyone? That's what the Sonic CD style was known as in the British Sonic the Comic. They make that up or what?

Nigel Kitching coined that name for his stories in Sonic the Comic. They were pretty good.

Actually, editor Richard Burton originally suggested the name change (although he wanted Metal Sonic to be called "Metallico", but Kitching managed to persuade him otherwise).

He also came up with the term "Boomers" (what the readers of Sonic the Comic were labelled forever more) iirc.

Well you learn something new every day. I wonder why the editor would care about such a thing though. Thank God they didn't go with Metallico.

Y'know what pisses me off the most? When Amy is referred to as Sonic's girlfriend. Y'know, I mean goddammit. What more does he have to do to convey the fact that he would rather not be within eyeshot of that girl?

It's kind of like how ALL the articles and promo material for Futurama said that Leela was Fry's girlfriend.

If you want to be technical his first public name was Robotnik. That doesn't mean the concept of Eggman didn't exist long before Robotnik.

And I would agree, but that final battle in Sonic 3 as Knuckles casts an odd shadow over the whole thing. The way it goes after the Master Emerald to power up was rather tenacious.

Argh. Silver Sonic is from Sonic 2 and Game Gear. He is rebuilt in Sonic 3&K and redubbed "Mecha Sonic". Metal Sonic is an entirely different robot. Give me a dollar.

Arguing over Eggman's real name is akin to arguing over Princess Toadstool's name - every fan should just use whatever they feel best using.

Personally, I don't like Robotnik because it makes him sound like he's Russian or something. And he's not.

To be fair, she was on ocassion. "Parasites Lost", "Time Keeps on Slipping", and presumably - post-series finale.

God willing. I too thought 'Robotnik' sounded russian, but I kinda liked it. When 'Eggman' came along, however, How could I not come to love it?

You know, I don't care about the connotations - I can't bring myself to abandon the name "Dr. Ivo Robotnik". I just won't let go of that first name until I see some kind of official documented evidence completely disproving it, even though I'm pretty sure that it's been abandoned at this point.

On the subject of "S.t.H." names...

The Badniks Who Looks Like Sonic et. al.:

Personally, I consider the way it goes is something like this:

"Sonic the Hegdehog 2 (Game Gear): <font color=gray>Mecha Sonic Mark I (code name: "Silver Sonic")</font> -- This one bounced around in a fashion similar to the Inflatable Eggmen (from "StH2MS"), intermittingly attacking with a built-in, Go Go Yubari-esque, morningstar. Neither intelligent nor heavily armed, it was quickly defeated.

"Sonic the Hedgehog CD": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 1.0)</font> -- The basic model. Highly intelligent and agruably faster than Sonic himself, with flight capabilities courtesy of an energy cannon/atomic-powered scram jet; very nasty. However, it couldn't turn all that well, and Sonic got it to fly into a wall at top speed, destroying it instantly. Appearently, though, Dr. Eggman kept Metal Sonic's A.I. on file, including its memory for use in later schemes (which we all know came back to bite him in the ass...).

"Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Master System/Genesis)": <font color=gray>Mecha Sonic Mark II (code name: "Silver Sonic")</font> -- Unlike Mk I, this SilvSon was armed to the teeth with a buzz saw blade and shrapnel launchers, as well as being very heavily armored. It also had speed close to Sonic's, courtesy of several small rocket engines. However, it was bogged down in it's own weapons and and, again, it's limited intelligence, so Sonic destroy this one, as well. However, it had many things which work very well, and when combing with the best of Metal Sonic, Eggman got our next guest...

"Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles": <font color=yellow>Mechanical Sonic</font> -- Yikes. This guy was equipped with increased versions of Metal Sonic's brains, speed, and flight capabilities, plus Mecha Sonic Mk II's weapons, and armor. But this one also had the ability to absorb the powers of the Master Emerald, making him virtually unstoppable. After fighting Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles, he was finally destroyed, and his mangled remains fell to the bottom of the ocean. Also, this is where we start to see Metal Sonic's sanity weakening, quite possibly due to the damaged files Eggman recovered from The Little Planet and/or the drastic increases in power he then gave Mechanical Sonic. After all, he killed the "General Eggrobo," Dr. Eggman's most trusted leutenient, in cold blood, before fighting Knuckles for control of the M.E. Also, Metal Sonic more than likely adapted Mechaniacal Sonic's Chaos Emerald interface some time later.

"Chaotix": <font color=red>Metal Sonic (version 2.0)</font> -- This Metal Sonic can interface with Eggman's computers, as well as having the ability to transform into a monstrous being similar in appearence to Knuckles. Also, in this grotesque form, its appearence is similar to the unused Metal Sonic (version 4.0) designs from "Sonic X-Treme", implying Dr. Eggman was planning upon reworking it, but never got around to it.

"Sonic the Fighters": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 3.0)</font> -- This new version of Metal Sonic allows him to replicate his oppenents' movements and attacks, in addition to all his old tricks. In terms of A.I., this one was more combat-minded, unlike the original model (pershaps Eggman included some of the previous Mecha and Mechanical Sonics programing, eh? Could this be the cause of Metal Sonic addapting a unstable personality like his "brother," Mechanical Sonic?). Eventually, he was destroyed.

"Sonic X-Treme": <font color=red>Metal Sonic (version 4.0 prototype)</font> -- It actually looks more like Knuckles than Sonic, and was probably intended to be massive in size. Because of the former and despite the latter, it was never made.

"Sonic X-Treme": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 4.0)<font> -- All I really know about it was that it was the standard Metal Sonic, only massive in size. Presumably it was very dangerous (yes, I count "S.X-T" as canon. Really).

"Sonic R": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 5.0)</font> -- back to his normal size, this version of Metal Sonic went back to racing.

"Sonic R": <font color=red>Metal Knuckles</font> -- This guy just screams "badass." He had knives for hands, for crying out loud! I wanna see this guy more often.

"Sonic R": <font color=orange>Tails Doll</font> -- This is just creepy. But do its eyes really go "Schlurppy"? The world may never know...

"Sonic Adventure": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 5.0)</font> -- Since I don't think MetSon was destoyed in "Sonic R", this is probably still version four. Probably, since he's in a green tube in the Egg Carrier. Probably.

"Sonic Adventure": <font color=gray>Mecha Sonic Mark III</font> -- Whatever it was, it's at the bottom of the ocean now. Oh, well.

"Sonic Adventure 2 Battle": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 6.0)</font> -- Like Version 4.0, it's much like his orginal model. But he talks now (or maybe he always talked but this is the first time they had the technology to show it. Whatever).

"Sonic Heroes": <font color=blue>Metal Sonic (version 6.0)/Metal Overlord</font> -- All those years of getting blown up, rebuilt, and put in storage have finally gotten to MetSon, and he goes insane. As do the fans. He kidnapps Dr. Eggman, acquires all the data he can get on Sonic et al., and rebuilds himself to harness the power of. He then sets out to kill Sonic at all costs. And fails. Again. Poor bastard.

Eggman's Real Name:

Personally, I think, given what we learnt from "Sonic Adventure 2", his real name is "Doctor Ivo Robotnik," and "Dr. Eggman," true to supervillain form, is his alias. And, for those in the know, "Ivo" is a male German name for, literally, "cut wood," and "Robotnik" is Czech for "slave," "peasent," or "serf." It is from this word that noted Czech writer Josef Čapek coined for his brother Karel for the latter's play http://jerz.setonhill.edu/resources/RUR ... al Robots", about a genetically engineered slave class who rebel against their oppressors. Just so you know.

This really isn't as complicated as everyone's making it.

Just go with the names used in the game, in the instruction manuals, in the official strategy guides or on the official websites. All Japanese versions of course.

Sonic 2 8-bit

Japanese instruction manual says "Mecha Sonic".

Sonic 2 16-bit

Japanese Sonic Jam and Sonic Mega Collection official strategy guides say "Mecha Sonic" (also written in English as "MECHANICAL SONIC").

Sonic & Knuckles

Japanese Sonic Jam and Sonic Mega Collection official strategy guides say "Mecha Sonic". May or may not be a graphically prettier version of the Sonic 2 16-bit guy.

Sonic the Fighters

Not the penultimate boss, but the odd Sonic robot in the intro that transforms into a rocket. It has "MECHA SONIC MODEL NO. 29" (at least it looks to be a "29" to me, I believe that's how Gibbon also read it but the glossary is down at the moment) written on its side. Has a Tails logo on it.

Sonic Adventure

Logic dictates that this is neither a new character nor an "upgrade" of an old character, any differences in look are due to the "detailed 3D-ification". It's either the robot from Sonic 2 16-bit or Sonic & Knuckles (or "both" if you believe those two to be one and the same).

And we all know who Metal Sonic is.

His name is Eggman because Ohshima gave him that name when designing the fucker. El Fin.

Edit: THAT... and the name Robotnik was ruined by the slew of shitty cartoons, comics and other rubbish merchendising.

Ok, a lot of people claim they still like to call "him" Robotnik, that's fine, in my heart of hearts he will always be Robotnik. However there are a lot of people in the Sonic internet community that claim he should be called Eggman on the grounds that that name came first, this rule is then undermined by the fact that the name Robotnik came first. However the real reason we should accept Eggman (well my belief) is all because of Sonic Adventure. Pre Adventure sonic games had very little in game story, it was told via manual which is something easily changed, but when Adventure came along plot was embedded in the game. Since the embedded plot could not be changed without change the plots itself, the Japanese plot remain in all version. Parodies with older Japanese’s plot and an expansion of older established plots in the Japanese Sonic games meant that the only way to truly make sense of sonic recent game outings (DC and onwards) is to except all previous japans plots over another. Hence why Eggman should be accepted over Robotnik and why all the Japanese plots should be accepted over western Sonic plots.
