I would've thought the system requirements discussion would've made it pretty clear it's for PC. I can't recall if they're porting it to next gen consoles or not but apparently they're incorperating parts of the gameplay into handheld titles or something, though not actually the entire game itself.
This is the first time I'd been exposed to this specific video as I hadn't really went looking for any media on the game so far. Watching this one though inspired me to go watch the entire speech too as it really does look truly amazing. Depending on how long it actually takes you to work up to the space travelling point though, I do wonder how long it'd hold my interest for. Exploring other worlds might be nice at first, but from that demonstration, there doesn't seem to really be any goals or motives to explore other than your own curiosity so it could grow old fast. Perhaps I'm wrong though and it's developed a lot since then, as he did mention the game was in the early stages then and I assume this was from last year's GDC.

I noticed Gibbon and 'holic had been acting more hostile recently.Popcorn wrote:Well, actually, there's a reason that I (and some other notable alumni of this institution) haven't been posting a lot recently: you all suck. However, there have been some underground rumblings happening in the last few days that are going to attempt to get a few well-entrenched balls moving again, and I don't just mean Gibbon's crusty love-plums. Things are going to change around here.
I'm all for this. I agree that interesting conversation has been steadily drying up since about a year ago. I don't think stricter rules are the best solution, but they'll at least cut down the steady growth of the 18 page "Hi I'm new" thread and that sort of problem. But don't just suppress bad posts, stimulate good ones. I think the best way you can breath life back into this stagnating place is to lead by example. Start good conversations, inspire us with your insight. It's worked before in the major topics.

Yes. That's what forum rules do.Zeta wrote:So you want to stimulate discussion on a forum by making it so that nobody's allowed to talk unless you deem it worthy enough?Making a single post that has nothing in it but a link does not constitute a worthwhile application of anyone's time. If you have nothing to say, say nothing.
You're all missing the point: his post could have been made by anyone. It was lazy, content-free and had nothing to offer anyone except those who hadn't yet seen the video; and even then that opportunity could have come from anywhere. It's just a completely boring, self-congratulating post that contributes nothing.Well I would've never gotten to see this awesome game were it not for Zeta's post, because it just so happens that not all of us read the same forums that Popcorn does.
Feel free to link things you think are of interest, but if you want to create a new thread to discuss it, then you're going to have to start by discussing it. This forum is not a dumping ground for your favourite things, and 'this is the greatest thing ever produced by mankind' is not an interesting or useful piece of information. Soon I (and others) are going to start deleting threads like these, whether you mortals like it or not. I don't even care if Pepperidge likes it or not.

Oh, and on the topic of Spore: the concept, execution and technology are all remarkably impressive, but so far I'm not convinced that it'll be any more fun to actually play than, well, the Sims ever was. Didn't the 'eating other animals and then laying eggs' mechanic reach its natural peak in Yoshi's Island?

Wow, this is getting somewhat sinister. I had picked up on Gibbon's hostility, and Holic as well after the N e o incident (and the dissapearance of his older, better avatar), but...cripes.
I completely agree with Frieza's "lead by example" idea; I'm still waiting for a topic with as much potential (and Sonic-based discussion) as the "favorite level" thread, which remains my all-time favorite.
And does Popcorn's status elevate him above punishment for double posts?

The one thing that worries me is the way that the game downloads content from other players to build your worlds. While this may sound like a good idea to keep the game varried on the surface, I'm concerned that it'll just lead to my planet being populated by hoardes of horses made out of wiggling penises. I mean, it's one thing to do it for the other planets you visit, but the demo video implied that it would basically be done for all the fauna on your planet aside from the particular species you evolve. I really don't want to start my game and see my little creature be chased by a animated Scooby Doo.
Gibbon's complaining about the forums and the site? Both of which he's hardly interacted with at all within the past 8 months or so? Jeeze. Leave your dog locked up at home, neglecting for six months and then come back and yell at it for piddling on the carpet and dying, whydoncha. But you don't outrank Gibbon's, and it's his website, and his rules.

He's hardly interacted with the forum because the forum has sucked so much. Stop taking it so personally. Your post happened to be the first post since we'd started discussing the new rules that breaks the new rules.Zeta wrote:Gibbon's complaining about the forums and the site? Pop, get off your fucking high horse. Forget for a moment that your desired forum rules are ludicrously anal. A larger problem is that no one knows what they are except for you.
There's nothing inherently wrong with a post like this. It's not exactly an offense to human decency to post a link to a cool video on a forum as a conversation starter. If you want to ban that kind of post then fine, but Jesus, at least have the decency to formally post the restrictions before you start abusing people for breaking them. No one here is a fucking psychic.

I haven't killed this topic because I wanted to use it to say: hey, don't do posts like this anymore. I think 'my [our] desired forum rules' are incredibly straightforward and make perfect sense, and I really like my high horse. It's incredibly useful.Esrever wrote:Pop, get off your fucking high horse. Forget for a moment that your desired forum rules are ludicrously anal. Currently, I'm voicing a personal opinion. I've never liked threads like this and I'm taking this opportunity to explain why. When Gibbon slaps us all upside the head with the New World Order we'll start taking things more seriously. There's nothing inherently wrong with a post like this. I know I'm rarely the voice of reason, and if I post at all it usually involves me banging on about how awesome I am, but I'd like to make a couple of points.
Firstly, I've not noticed a decline in the forum's integrity (such as it is, or was), and to my mind the topics we discuss and the threads being posted have never shown a clear downward spiral into worthlessness. I did, however, notice that Gibs, Holic and Pop hadn't been posting for ages. I thought you guys had fucking bird flu or something. If you've all felt this way for all this time, why not tell us when you first noticed? We're all big boys (and girls, and Del) and I'm sure we can handle it. In fact, why not lead by example and actually start some discussions instead? I respect that everyone has real lives to lead, everyone gets pissed off, but come off it guys; I always figured we were more a community (petty jabs, snipes and flat-out insults inclusive) than just a generic talky-talky board. If there's a problem, let's get it all off our chests so we can get back to talking about boobies.
Point the second. The problem here seems to be that you (whoever "you" entails) consider posting a thread with just a link and a humorous, self-congratulatory sentence to be an extreme no-no, and that a discussion could not spark from such laziness and crass egocentricity. I have to say just posting the link is enough for me; if I see a link on this board I'll click it, because I trust the posters here to make it something awesome. The fact that it was just a one-sentence "You MUST see this" kind of thing led me to be more interested than if I was presented with a wall of text. You say that a discussion can't form from a link alone? This is the fucking GHZ! Topics meander here and about, floating on light breezes ready to be plucked from the air at any given time. We can and will create a discussion from, if the situation calls, absolutely nothing. I think stamping into a thread and declaring it a discussion-killer within the first few posts is a bit off. Stamping in after the thread has been inactive for a day because people think it is stupid is probably the right thing to do.
One more point, before I go to bed...take this as an example (and not a spiteful one, I still love Gibbon more than most recreational drugs); although Gibs didn't just post a one-liner, it's true, I personally was still left in the dark. I don't know who or what the fuck Valis is and Gibbon's post does nothing to enlighten me, so this topic is meaningless; thus, any post I would make would be equally meaningless. However, I respect that those who do know what Valis is would understand, find the link relevant, and form a discussion around it. Yes, I feel left out half the time because I don't understand or because it's not relevant, and so I just don't post, but I never take it personally. Just something to think about.

Yeah. We tried to be an actual worthy real important debate board for a while, remember? Everybody got all pissy at eachother and we basically decided to stop doing that simply because everyone thought it was too hard and started too much drama, so we went back to babbling nonsensically at eachother. We're all big boys (and girls, and Del) and I'm sure we can handle it. I kinda agree that in the future we should make more of an effort to not just post a link, but I think the way Popcorn went about comdemning it was all wrong. We haven't really heard anything from you in several months (I understand cause this place 'sucks' and I agree to a degree), then you just come busting in with a post that basically tells Zeta to fuck off. You could have been a bit nicer about it or something.
Also I had not seen anything about Spore ever. There will always be someone who has seen whatever was linked, that is inevitable, but it sounds like the majority of us have not seen this.

I have to agree with J-man and Light Speed's points, lately posts have just been guys showing off their wit (or lack of, in my case).
Not all topics are so bad, the SOR thread has raised some discussion and the pictures thread is still brimming with decent posts, even if some are based on self-depreciation.
At the end of the day, I guess there's the most simple of rules, if you don't like a thread, don't post in it.
That's my peice, finito.
On Spore again, I never heard of it either, which is why the simple link is good in this case.
