The GameBoy Evolution, or GameBoy Next or whatever they're going to call it, is still coming out. But since they didn't show it off, I guess not for a while.Frieza2000 wrote:When I first heard about 'Gameboy Evolution', I was about to start a massacre.
That new Mario Bros. (yes, Bros.) game looked great last year, and it looks even better now.

For starters, I don't think going poly was a good idea. At all. What is so awful looking about the new Super Mario Brothers DS?
I thought there was supposed to be some Peach game that played like a 2D Mario? I don't really know or care anymore. I'd just love for Nintendo to make another game without Mario or one of the Mario characters in it. It's gotten worse than Mega Man.

Eh, I don't know which way developers design their games. All I know is that the far better resolution and image quality offered by HD is awesome, even without taking the wider aspect ratio into consideration. You really have to see it to realize the amazingly vast difference it offers. I, personally, can never go back to regular RCA willingly.Esrever wrote:So what's the deal, then? Will using a regular TV make the game defective, like watching a film in pan and scan? Or, will using an HDTV just artificially bloat up the viewing area for no purpose? Either way, I'm very excited about it!
It's ugly and lacks the charm and intelligent design that made the original Mario games so great. It looks exactly like another one of those schlocked-together cash-in cows with Mario pasted into it. Why does Nintendo have to use the Mario 64 model? I want a REAL Mario side-scroller, like Super Mario Bros. 1, 3, World, or Yoshi's Island. I don't think we've gotten one since those games.Ngangbius wrote:What is so awful looking about the new Super Mario Brothers DS?

I edited my previous post with my thoughts on the Mario game. Another thing I've noticed now that I've seen more screenshots - the level design looks very flat, horizontal and linear - where have all the slopes and platforms gone?
I don't think that it looks like Super Mario World at all, take the drab backgrounds for example as opposed to SMW's tall mountains with eyes and smiley clouds and other such wonderful colourful nonsense.Esrever wrote:It looks... like Mario World in 3D, which means it looks very nostalgic and kind of boring.
I want to know who buys all of those goddamn Mario Party games.Green Gibbon! wrote:I thought there was supposed to be some Peach game that played like a 2D Mario? I don't really know or care anymore. At least with the other Mario sub-franchises there's only one game every 4 years or so, maybe sometimes a little more if you count the handheld counterparts. 6 full price home console Mario Party games and 1 handheld Mario Party game (how the fuck is that supposed to work?) in the span of 6 years is absolutely tragic, especially for what is essentially a novelty game.Segaholic2 wrote:The same people that will buy every iteration of Mario Tennis, Baseball, Soccer, and Pinball.

Well, the Mario Bros. game has been in development for over a year now, so I don't think it's going to be thrown together. I agree though, the visuals are rather bland though. The theme song is catchy though...
They're also working on a sequel to that Mario Superstar RPG that was actually very good.

I liked Mario & Luigi and I'm sure the DS game will be good but I wasn't so impressed with the video for that. It just looks like the GBA one with FUCKING BABY/MINI CHARACTERS! WTF!firemario1001 wrote:They're also working on a sequel to that Mario Superstar RPG that was actually very good.
Just to clarify that a bit you still play regular Mario and Luigi but this time they seem to be accompanied by their baby selves who you can control seperately.
EDIT: Here's some pics so you can see what I'm talking about

Mario Party sells about 500K in both Japan and U.S. each.
We have to find those 1 million people who keep buying the games and beat them.
Also, I do agree that polys are the wrong art direction to take the new SMB game and I really would have been better using good* sprites and hand drawn backgrounds.
Still it looks better than what it did last year.
And by good, I mean the sprites that was like in M&L1 and not like Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

You know what's really bad about the Mario Party series? They run out of ideas for mini-games so they just take take ones out of the older games and dress them up differently. That jump rope game in the first shot looks exactly like the hot rope jump mini-game in the 1st game... which was remade in Mario Party 2.
And yes I know this because... I own Mario Party 1, 2, and 3...

Whatever the hell happened to "wait and see"?
The Revolution is supposed to change the way we play video games
Since we don't know how we play games on the Revolution yet, we don't know what it's meant to be revolutionising... It's as simple as that
And I never was a big Mario fan... I couldn't care about a new 2D side-scroller any less

Jesus, I may not like Microsoft's "Swiss Army Knife" tactic to the Xbox, but Nintendo showed up with practically nothing notable.
I still have to go check out Sony's conference, but I don't think it could be any worse.
edit: Oh God, it is worse. They won't shut the fuck up about how much they love their cell processor. Some of the tech demos are neat though.

I think it just comes down to the fact that they had basically no significant new games to show on the home console front. Almost all the Cube games they showed had been announced already, and the ones that hadn't been announced before were... actually, I can only think of one: Mario Strikers.
Asside from Zelda, where are the must have Cube titles of 2005? The lineup is always sparse, but at least at last year's e3 we had Metroid Prime 2, Pikmin 2, Starfox Assault and Resident Evil 4. This year we have Zelda, and a bunch of Mario spinoffs. The funny thing is that there ARE other interesting Cube titles... Kirby and Odama come to mind... but were they even shown at the press conference?
I understand why the lull in the conference existed... Nintendo is busy working on the Revolution and its games. That's why it's all the more bizarre that they didn't actually show the Revolution at all. Sure, they showed us the Revolution's casing, and they told us a bit about their planned online service. But we still don't know much of anything about the system, the specs, the controller, the games, and the thing that makes the Revolution revolutionary.
It's not surprising that they had so little to show this early, but it is pretty surprising that they didn't have much else for their existing systems to fill the gap in the meantime.
I think the dual screen Mario Superstar game sounds really cool, though.
